June 15- Week 8 Term 2 Newsleer 2018 Last week, some of the Senior School staff and myself had the privilege of visiting our Year 10 students while they completed their week of work experience. This is a requirement of their Personal Learning Plan (PLP) class. These students did NT Christian College proud, representing themselves and their College in a variety of work places. The students learned about the different types of jobs that are available, what those jobs entail and the importance of being punctual. For some of our students, it confirmed the vocation they would like to pursue after Year 12. Others grew in confidence in their communication and some learned to persevere and be flexible even when their work experience fell through at the last minute. By the end of the week, one student was even offered employment! All of these work experience placements could not happen without the amazing support of our local businesses, companies, schools and work places in Darwin, Palmerston and the rural area. June 15- Week 8 Term 2 Newsletter 2018

Last week, some of the Senior School staff and myself had the privilege of visiting our Year 10 students while they completed their week of work experience. This is a requirement of their Personal Learning Plan (PLP) class. These students did NT Christian College proud, representing themselves and their College in a variety of work places.

I would like to

Diary Dates-

Over the years I have come to really appreciate the wisdom of Sir Ken Robinson. He has much to say about

education and how we can do it better. So often his ideas refresh my desire to improve as an educator and

to help our school become a leader in education. Below are some quotes from Ken Robinson and how I see

them played out in our school:

"Creativity is as important as literacy."

There is a vibrancy in our school from the beautiful grounds to the smiles of our students. We value the

reading, writing and arithmetic and find ways to express them through story, colour, design and imagination. It

is always a highlight of my day when a student ‘gets’ an idea, and is able to link it to the world around them.

"Our task is to educate our students' whole being, so they can face the future. We may not see the

future, but they will, and our job is to help them make something of it."

This is a tough one as the world seems to be changing so quickly that I do not know how we will keep up.

As I look at the students in Senior School, I am encouraged for our future. They are people who are not only

students, but lifelong learners who are keen to explore the world. They have social skills and abilities that

will stand them in good stead when they enter the ‘real world’. As a school, we are focused on educating the

whole student – mind, body and spirit. Our faith plays an integral role in this focus as we acknowledge each

student as a unique creation of God.

"Human resources are like natural resources; they’re often buried deep. You have to go looking for

them, they’re not just lying around on the surface. You have to create the circumstances where they

show themselves."

Teaching can often feel like mining. We are constantly looking for ways to help our students learn and to

reveal their talents and abilities. We are seeking to find ways for them to blossom and flourish. There are

times when it feels that all we are getting is dirt, but persistence finds the diamonds. Teachers use their

creativity to help students explore all aspects of their learning abilities. This can be seen right across our

school as opportunities for sport, entrepreneurship, entertaining and fun are offered and cherished.

"Human communities depend upon a diversity of talent not a singular conception of ability."

Academic intelligence is one type of intelligence. As a school we support and help all of our students to

obtain their best academic results. We are focused on providing learning opportunities that encourage

academic learning and achieving the necessary outcomes. We also value intelligence that is not purely

academic. We value the ability to make right choices, serve others, and have compassion and dedication.

These are key components that ensure that our students will be able to achieve their best and be effective

members of community.

I am proud to be a member of this school community and I am proud of our students. Thank you for

partnering with us to help your children to be the best citizens of the future that they can be.

Extreme Earth!

5/6M and 6H have been learning about Extreme Earth this term.

Last week, students displayed their models in a Mini Museum for the rest of Primary School and Kingdom Kids.

It was a great opportunity to share what they had learnt with others.

Recognise anything?!

Over the year, we have been handed lots of interesting items

for lost property - and these ones have not been claimed.

Please drop in at the College reception if you see anything

here that might belong to you.

Lost Property

The College will be participating in a Read-A-Thon next term to

raise money for an aid organisation called TEAR Australia

(tear.org.au). This is an optional activity for all students.

Students who register will seek sponsors for the event who will

donate an agreed amount per book read. All money raised will

go towards aid programs organised by TEAR. The Read-A-Thon

program will run for six weeks during Term 3.

The College is participating in this program as we want to

support people less fortunate than we are and, at the same time,

encourage a love of reading in our students.

If you have any questions, please contact your friendly library

staff.
