  • Year 10 C Pathway

    Mr. D. Patterson

  • Outcomes

    Remember the products of common

    reactions:

    Acid + metal

    Acid + metal hydroxide

Write balanced ionic equations for the

    reactions above

  • Common reactions

In this four week course we will look at

    reactions for:

Ionic compounds dissociating when in water

    Ionic compounds precipitating when mixed

    Acid + metals

    Acid + metal hydroxides

  • Acids and Bases

Name and formula of common acids:

    CH3COOH – Ethanoic acid

    H3PO4 – Phosphoric acid

    H2SO4 – Sulfuric acid

    HNO3 – Nitric acid

    H2CO3 – Carbonic acid

    HCl – Hydrochloric acid

    found on page 35

  • Bases are those compounds with

    hydroxide in them.

    Ie: Metal hydroxides

    Acids and Bases

  • Acid and Metal

Reaction of an acid and metal produces

    hydrogen gas and a salt

The hydrogen gas is made up of the

hydrogen ions ( ) from the acid.

The salt is made up of the metal ion

(positive) and the negative ion of the

    acid

  • Acid and Metal

    The general reaction is:

Acid + metal salt + hydrogen gas

  • Acid and Metal - Example

Write an equation for the reaction

    between hydrochloric acid and

    magnesium

  • Acid and Metal - Example

  • Acid and Metal Hydroxide

(base) Reaction of an acid and metal hydroxide

    produces water and a salt

The water is made up of the hydrogen ions

    ( ) from the acid and hydroxide ( )

    ions from the base

The salt is made up of the metal ion

(positive) and the negative ion of the

    acid

  • Acid and Metal Hydroxide

    The general reaction is:

Acid + metal hydroxide salt + water
