Why are GCSEs important?
Your GCSE results are a very important part of your academic journey. The results you get can affect the following:
• The sixth form you go to
• The qualifications you take next
• Your eligibility for a university course
• The universities you can apply to
• Your career prospects
What is the purpose of the Ebacc?
> The EBacc is made up of the subjects which are considered essential to many degrees and open up lots of doors.
> A study by the UCL Institute of Education shows that studying subjects included in the EBacc provides students with greater opportunities in further education and increases the likelihood that a pupil will stay on in full-time education.
> Sutton Trust research reveals that studying the EBacc can help improve a young person’s performance in English and maths.
> The government’s ambition is to see 75% of pupils studying the EBacc subject combination at GCSE by 2022, and 90% by 2025.

Maths and English GCSEs
The ability to use both Maths and English in an everyday setting is important not just for work, but for the emotional, social and physical well-being of people
Maths and English are the building blocks not only for future skills and qualifications, but for us to develop as people too.
Assessment for Learning and Reporting
>At the start of Year 9 your son will have been set a target grade. This is an ‘End of Course’ target, not an ‘End of Year’ target.
>Using your son’s half termly assessments, we will be able to identify whether your son is on target to achieve his targets
>Your son’s report card will show you whether he is on target for each subject he is studying.

How can I support my son to ensure the best outcomes?
> Ask to see the topic lists for the assessments/ Specifications for the exams
> Test your son on his knowledge using the knowledge organiser and revision guide
> Make sure your son does the practice questions from the revision guides/ booklets given by teachers (answers are always in the back so can be checked)
> Ensure your son completes his homework (at least 1-2 hours every evening) -ensure he has the time and space to do so
How can I support my son to ensure the best outcomes?
>Ensure he looks through his assessments and the feedback he has on them. This will tell him what he needs to work on next
>Ensure your son attends all necessary interventions; these are NOT a replacement for home learning and revision. Your son also needs to engage with the work during these sessions.
>Ensure your son has a revision timetable and is revising for his exams consistently every evening and at weekends (2 hours each evening for year 11)

Revision and homework tips
> Create a revision and homework timetable: START EARLY
> Do NOT simply re-read your notes (this has very limited impact) OR spend ages making them look nice
> Instead make revision flashcards and mind maps to SUMMARISE the information
> Do PRACTICE QUESTIONS
> Take SHORT breaks (minimum every hour). Do something active during the break.
> During weekends and holidays, revise earlier in the day rather than later
> Have the correct working space and sit at a proper desk; no distractions
> Avoid procrastination (don’t put it off)- having a clear timetable helps.
