  • Procedure

    Warm-up Off the screens

    1. Ask students to bring a photo of their family to the class. 2. Ask students to show their pictures to their classmates and tell about their family. 3. Initially, students should give the relatives’ names and how old they are.

e.g. This is Tom, he is eight years old. This is Anna.

    Screen 2

Lucy: Look at my photos, Pat. Pat: OK. Is this your mother? Lucy: Yes, it is. Pat: And is this your father?? Lucy: Yes, it is. They're my parents. Pat: Is this your grandmother? Lucy: Yes, it is. Pat: Is this your grandfather? Lucy: Yes, it is. They're my grandparents. Pat: Oh! Is this your brother, Lucy? Lucy: No, it isn't! It's my sister! Pat: Is this your brother? Lucy: Yes, it is. Pat: Is this your sister too? Lucy: It's me, silly! Pat: You've got a nice family, Lucy! Lucy: Thank you, Pat.

Exploit the scene by asking the Ss to describe what they can see. This will help students with pronunciation

Ask students to listen and watch. Drill the family words with the class.

Note: Ask questions about different family members.

Personalise the topic by asking the children to take out the photos of their family and present their family members to the class. Now use the words: brother, mother, father etc.

  • Additional activity: Handout 1. Ask students to match the boys and the girls.

    grandmother + grandfather

  • Additional activity: Handout 2. Ask students to complete the family tree with the missing words. For stronger groups, cut the bottom of the handout so that they do not see all the possible answers.

    Screen 6

Audio: Is this your mother? Yes, it is. They're my parents.

Give the Ss these instructions for the ‘Listen and say’ activity. The aim is to practice a short natural dialogue.

    1. Look at the picture and read the dialogue.

    2. Click on the audio and listen to the question. Think about how to answer it.

    3. Answer the question so it is true for you. You can press ‘pause’ at any time and listen again.

    4. Repeat as many times as you want to. Now it’s your turn.

  • This is a free practice stage. The aim is personalization. Tell Ss to work in pairs and ask and answer the questions. Organise students’ photos before lesson – ask student to bring their family photo to the classroom. Alternatively, children can use the photo on screen and pretend it's their own family. Alternatively, they can draw/paint their family.

    1. Listen to the dialogue. 2. Ask students to drag and drop the

correct answers. Check it with students. 3. Students practise in pairs or small

groups with the photo on the screen or (ideally) with photos of their own family. They take turns asking Is this your ...? or Who's this? and answering the questions.

    4. If they don't bring real photos, they can draw a picture but this will take up some time.

    5. Then they can present their family to the whole class by saying This is my mother/father, etc.
