The Classical Music Society In this context, The Classical Music Society (CMS) was conceived in 2007 as a brain child of Eng. Udaya Chinthaka Jayatilake; Head of the Department of Mathematics, at that time. The main aim was to accommodate the growing need of providing students, studying in a highly technical environment, with an opportunity to uplift their aesthetic perceptions.

Thereby the society facilitates a pathway for students to become more self- confident, balanced and sensitive individuals through activities that focus on team work, musical performance and appreciation. The member population consists of students from all three faculties, of all races and ethnicities; talented performers and die- hard music lovers a like.

Promoting the appreciation of authentic musical styles, within the university culture, with special focus on classical music.

Providing students with the opportunity of gaining thorough background knowledge on music by introducing classical music as a subject.

Maintaining a classical musical group/ orchestra within the university.

Creating an environment in which the student can experience and learn from his/ her peers while acknowledging the importance of team-work and harmonious mutual existence.

Our Objectives

Page 6: Yathra 2015 proposal

Since its inception, the CMS has successfully organized and hosted a Victor Rathnayake Tribute Concert (2009), a Jazz concert performed by leading local and foreign artists (2009), North Indian classical music concerts, workshops and annual talent shows.

Its members also actively participate in regular musical events of the university, such as the annual fresher’s welcome, fresher’s orientation programmes, and unite under its name for all musical affairs of a religious nature. This year, the CMS ventured into a new arena, with the aim of providing an insight of the society to all the newcomers to the university. “Thotupala” was the outcome of this idea, and provided a novel experience to the audience, by giving a brief insight into the society.

Since last year we have introduced a new event called “Handawa” (The Evening) for which students from all 3 faculties gather to enjoy the evening with music.

The Journey So far

Yathra The society’s forte however, is “Yathra” (Voyage). Produced by the CMS as an annual musical evening, “Yathra” has become one of the best loved and much awaited events in the university calendar. The show, four years running, has been graced by eminent musicians by the likes of Victor Rathnayake, Sunil Edirisinghe, Rohana Weerasinghe, Ruwan Weerasekara, Deepika Priyadarshani and Nadeeka Guruge. The standards of music, performance, costumes and stage effects has seen a phenomenal growth throughout the years with more and more students, who are not only able musicians, but talented stage decorators, costume designers, compeers and organizers joining in for the better success of the event.

For the first time, Yathra stepped beyond the university and staged the talents of university students at the renowned National Youth Center Auditorium, Maharagama in 2012. Following those footsteps CMS successfully organized “Yathra 2013” last year.

It is with great pride that we state that “Yathra 2013”, held on 16th January 2014, at National Youth Center Auditorium, Maharagama was a phenomenal achievement in musical discipline, innovation and mastery. The concert was highly commended by the famed musicians Rohana Weerasinghe and Ruwan Weerasekara who graced the event as chief guests.

Project VisionTo be the ultimate platform of creativity and team work, within the university system; thereby playing a unique role in the creation of a self- confident, socially responsible and conscious university graduate.

Objectives• Creating a trend for aesthetic perceptions “with depth” within the university culture.• Harnessing the neglected or forgotten aesthetic talents of the student population, studying under a strict, strenuous strict academic schedule.• Promoting the importance of music as a universal language through the presentation of a vast range of musical styles that cater to a wider audience.• Uniting an extremely diverse range of individuals towards one goal, thereby being an exemplary event that encourages unity, regardless of existing cultural tensions.• Advocating “team- work” as the key to a successful venture.• Being an extra- curricular activity that fosters the aim of the university to produce world class graduates who are academically sound, self-confident, flexible, and internationally recognized.

The trends in today’s world are such that music is produced in an instantaneous manner, with little regard given to the complex yet subtle relationship between lyrics, melody and music that is essential in creating a timeless composition. Hence the young generation is rarely exposed to what we define as ‘quality music’; music that appeals to the heart as well as the ear. Therefore our repertoire consists of well- known yet seldom heard timeless classical numbers as well as ‘modern’ compositions, interpreted in our own unique way.

Thus, “Yathra 2015” is set to go on boards from 6.00 pm to 8.30 pm at the National Youth Centre auditorium on the 2nd April 2015, graced by the

presence of the eminent musicians as chief guests. The target audience of 1500 will consist of members of

University staff, University alumni, students and their parents.

Our estimate for “Yathra 2015” totals on Rs 1,000,000 which is based upon an optimum choice of solutions to realize each necessity. (An estimated cost breakup is attached herewith)

Thus the success of this venture will rely heavily on building strong commercial partnerships which will assist us in not only obtaining the required items/ services, but also in keeping ticket prices at an affordable rate for the university student.
