The 4th Annual Bouverie Alumni & Friends Celebrations
The 4th Annual Bouverie Alumni & Friends Celebrations On the 26th of February, 4th Annual Bouverie Alumni & Friends Celebrations was held at the Bouverie Centre. This year’s alumni theme was ‘Bouverie Goes Bush’. The evening began with delightful pre-dinner drinks and nibblies (I for one certainly ate too many oysters) followed by Aunty Di Kerr’s moving Welcome to Country. Several people, Aboriginal and non Aboriginal, commented that Aunty Di’s Welcome to Country was extraordinarily moving. Further to this several people reflected that they felt Bouverie had turn corner in the long journey towards true reconciliation.

Fantastic prizes were awarded for The Best Individual Interpretation of the Theme and The Best Table Interpretation. A wonderful film titled A Country Practice… Practicing in the Country, by San Leenstra (Alumna 2012) and Barbara Nettelbeck (Alumna 2006) from the Bendigo Family Therapy Group, was screened. The film addressed, with much humour, the complexities of working with families in a systemic way, in rural Victoria. Victoria. Somehow Jana and Ivy made such serious and complex work an incredibly funny event.
Journalist and channel 9 news-reader, Brett McLeod, then presented an incredibly arresting and revealing, presentation on his personal experiences and reflections on Journalism and Trauma. This truly was a wonderful evening concluded with a good old country and western RnB band. The 2016 Alumni Dinner will again be held in February.

The 4th Annual Bouverie Alumni & Friends Celebrations
This was followed by an inspirational interlude, with Jana Kelly interviewing Ivy Yaram (Alumnae 2012) around healing Aboriginal Families in rural Victoria. There were certainly similarities and differences, in the film, A Country Practice… Practicing in the Country and Ivy (and Daphne’s LOL) reflections.

Emeritus Emeritus Professor Judy Atkinson, a leading expert in understanding trans
generational healing and recovery from trauma in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples, conducted a two day workshop at the Bouverie Centre, titled Working with
Families, Children and Complex Trauma Environments.
The Bouverie Centre was delighted to present this landmark workshop.
The intent of the workshop was to ‘work with families to help prevent the level of child
removals in every state of Australia.’ Confronting, challenging and wonderfully expansive in
depth and breadth, Aunty Judy’s workshop was an absolute eye opener.
The national and international work Aunty Judy undertakes is truly that of an Elder.
A selection of the participants, written comments on their evaluation sheets are transcribed
below.
To the question;
What learning or skills will be of most use to you; participants responded with:
Motivation to make more change in my work place.
To focus more on self care.
Dadirri – Play therapy, observe and reflect.
Nurturing – Children at play.
Deep Listening.
‘Educaring,’ importance of emotional learning in the school setting.
Hearing the voice of the child.
General responses to the two-‐day workshop were:
Thank you for challenging me reminding me why I do this work. x
Please keep providing us with culturally informed and Aboriginal specific training workshops.
Thank you for a very enjoyable and well organized workshop. The food was excellent.
She was wonderful, could listen to her all day.
Thank you for an emotionally and thought provoking two days.
Food was fabulous!
