COURSE PROJECTS

Wi-Fi Based Flight Formation Maintenance System for UAVs

Participated in a Group Project that designed and tested the use of 802.11g Wi-Fi to allow unmanned

aerial vehicles (UAVs) to communicate with each other and maintain their flight formation even if their

GPS signal is lost. This particular system was required to maintain the positions of the UAVs within 6

inches up to 200 feet apart with a weigh allowance of one half of a pound. This project aims to develop

stable Wi-Fi systems that will allow the aircraft to communicate with each other. The system creates a

TCP/IP Ad-hoc network over Wi-Fi utilizing the Gumstix module. It also obtains UAVs orientation using

an I2C connection between the Arduino Mega 2560 and MinIMU-9. Furthermore, we have created a

working triangulation algorithm in conjunction with those systems, and together they will form the Wi-Fi

based flight formation maintenance system for aircraft. It will demonstrate a working algorithm prototype

that can locate and pinpoint the position of aircraft independent of GPS.
