In early 2016 local glass artists began making the thousands of glass objects at Penland School of Crafts for Burnsvilles new Public Art Project. The glass objects will be featured inside large telescope-like structures made of glass and steel anchoring both the West and East entrances into Burnsville.

Nationally known Public Artist/Planner, Jack Mackie, designed the towns gateways. Jack was hired by Burnsville and Toe River Arts Council in 2014 as a part of a North Carolina Arts Council smART Initiative to support communities through their cre-ative economy efforts. Jack Mackie is working closely with NC Arts Council, NC DOT, the Town, and the community to develop concepts for this project that will tell the story of Burnsville and reveal its trea-sured inventiveness, artistic heritage, rural mountain setting, and vision.

Over the last 25 years, more and more artists and craftspeople fromthe Toe River region have earned national and international acclaim for their work. Today, professional creativity represents a

main economic engine in Yancey and Mitchell County. There are literally hundreds of artists and craftspeople work-ing in local studios in many different mediums and disciplines; perhaps one of the highest concentrations of artists, per capita, in the nation. The new public art features will showcase this significance and will spur further economic development. Because of this long history of arts and crafts here, Mackie says, I really wanted to come to work with this community.

The handmade glass objects will be placed into metal wire-mesh baskets, which will then be wrapped aroundtallsteel cylinders to give the sculptures their distinct telescope look. They will be solar powered to showcase the colors reflecting sunrise for the East entrance, and sunset for the West. Stop by the Burnsville TRAC Gallery located on 102 Main Street for an up close view of the hand-blown glass objects that will be included in this telescope like structure.

The artistic telescopes will signify this amazing arts community, the dark sky designation, and our upcom-ing ability to view the night sky with the completion of Mayland Community Colleges new star park. The Blue Ridge Star Park, located on the mountaintop 2.1 miles on Highway 80 North, will offer a 360-degree view inan area that is certified as an International Dark Sky Community. A large StarStructure Newtonian tele-scope with a 34-inch mirror, currently being built, will be the largest in the Southeast. The roll-off-roof obser-vatory building will be on the summit at an elevation of 2,736 feet and will be available for educational and public outreach activities.

In addition to redesigning Burnsvilles main entrances, and the end of South Main Street, the project also calls for new landscaping with strong vining plants and tall columns of glass on the long wall that runs along Highway 19E. Plans also include Mountain Siting Seating, artist carved seating that will be placed at intervals along the new sidewalks, and laser cut designed pole wraps at intersections.
