The Challenge to build a lighterinverter generatorInverter type generators are productsthat produce the same type of qualityelectric current with consistent wave-length supplied to households over pub-lic electricity grids. That means thesegenerators can be used for poweringtoday’s sophisticated electric applianceswith microcomputer control systems.Today, Yamaha offers a lineup of threeinverter generator models, starting withthe EF2800i (N. American model)introduced in 2000 and followed by the

1 kVA model EF1000iS andthe 3 kVA model EF3000iSEwith their noise-reductionfeatures and revolutionarydesign. The EF2800i debuted as theworld’s first 2 kVA class opentype generator with an invert-er function. Besides the quali-ty current it supplies, thismodel has also won populari-ty for its light weight, takingthe 45 kg of equivalent mod-els down to a light 30 kg.

According to Mr. Toshi Oikawa, theproduct planning representative whoworked on the EF2800i project: “At thetime there werealready a few low-noise inverter gen-erators on the mar-ket from the othermakers but becausethey were so heavy,they weren’t reallypopular. We decidedwe would try tobuild the next-gener-ation generator byfirst going aroundthe market andgathering infor-mation about whatthe customers reallywanted.” Mr. Oikawa adds: “What

Three decades later, Yamaha generators are being used bypeople in more than 80 countries around the world. In output, theYamaha lineup today ranges from 1 kVA to 26 kVA, while theirengine types include nine different 4-stokes, two 2-strokes and fourdiesel-burning types. With specs tailored to the needs of each mar-ket, these models are now supplied in some 120 variations world-wide. In this issue of Yamaha News we look at the state-of-the-arttechnologies in Yamaha’s flagship inverter models and talk to thepeople in YMC’s Power Products Operations about the Yamahagenerators of today and what makes them unique.

we found by talking to workers whoused generators at construction sites inJapan and other places was that theywanted generators with a weight lightenough for one man to carry. What’smore, many of the workers at construc-tion sites today are older men. So, wedecided to make lightness and compact-ness our main development aims, andwe set about to build an open type witha target weight of under 30 kg.

The development project became aprocess of finding every possible wayto reduce product weight. Besidesdesigning a new light frame, a numberof advanced technologies and uniqueYamaha know-how were broughttogether in the design of this model,including an exclusive generatingmechanism called a multi-polar alter-nator, a single cooling fan system toserve both the engine and the generat-

ing unit and new Yamaha advance-ments in inverter technology. Everycomponent was examined to find pos-sible weight reductions of even onegram. But these weight reductionefforts also produced some unexpectedproblems. Says Mr. Naoto Mazuka, “With theearly prototypes the body was light-ened so much that when it was run thevibration would actually cause thegenerator to start moving around. Inthe end we solved this problem byimproving the engine mount systemand revising the balance, and we alsofound it best to actually add a fewhundred more grams of weight thanthe initial prototypes.”

This development project eventuallygave birth to a new product that com-bined light weight and compact designwith high-quality electric current, high

The Inverter GeneratorThis is a generator that produces an electric cur-rent with consistent waveform free of the smalldips and bumps found in the waveform of lowerquality electrical current. This is done by convert-ing the initially generated AC current once into DCcurrent and then using a controller to convert itback to AC current. Yamaha’s inverter generatorsuse a Yamaha-exclusive pulse width modulation(PWM) method to create high-quality electricalcurrent.

power, good fuel economy and envi-ronment-friendly performance. Andthe response from the customers wasgood. “In Japan, the high-quality ofthe electricity supplied by this modelwas especially appreciated. And, forcustomers who were using an inverterunit that they had bought separately asan attachable option, having a genera-tor with a built-in inverter unit as stan-dard equipment was both more assur-ing and less expensive,” says the Mar-keting representative involved, Mr.Toru Sugimoto. “Meanwhile, in theUS market where customers oftencarry generators in their camping cars,the lightness and quietness of thismodel were particularly well received.Of course, it was also popular at con-struction sites in the US as well,” Mr.Sugimoto adds. In fact, 70% of theYamaha generators sold in the UStoday are inverter types.

Sine WaveWhen viewed on the monitor of an electricityevaluator, the electricity supplied through ourpublic utility systems create clean, even waveswith consistent wave height, and if the inconsis-tencies in the waves remain within a range of 5%,it is considered high-quality “sine wave” electrici-ty. Yamaha inverter generators produce sinewave electricity with a rate of discrepancy of lessthan 2.5%. This makes it suitable for use withappliances containing microcomputer control sys-tems.

Open type generatorWith this type of generator the generator unit is mount-ed inside a simple steel pipe framework with no particu-lar noise-reducing structural parts.

MZ SeriesThis is the Yamaha series of generator-specific engineslaunched in 1994 and now firmly established in the multi-purpose engine market. It includes the MZ85, MZ125,MZ175, MZ250, MZ300 and the MZ360. They all featurean OHV engine format. Besides generators, these enginesare also used in other products like Yamaha golf cars.

In search of a completely newdesignYamaha’s second and third inverter gen-erator models, the EF1000iS andEF3000iSE, added yet another elementto the lightness, compactness and high-quality of the EF2800i: a completelynew body design. “In the past we gavepriority to practical functionality. Butwith the new models we wanted to offerthe kind of attractive design that wouldmake people want to take the generatoralong for leisure uses like camping. Ofcorse, we made it a point to take the per-spective of the user and design the prod-uct to be both pleasing and easy to use.So, we ended up adding a lot of ele-ments that weren’t in the original prod-uct concept,” says Mr. Kiyomi Namaiof Marketing. “With previous models it was enoughjust to fit the generator within a straight-lined frame. But with the new low-noisetype it was necessary to fit the generatorfunction into a rounded, smoother bodyin ways that also improved ease of useand environmental performance. It was

a process of trial and error toresolve a number of conflict-ing needs. For example,giving priority toexhaust performancewould make thecooling functionsuffer, whileincreasing noise-proofing invari-ably adds weightas well,” says Mr.Jiro Miyasaka ofProduct Planning.

The EF3000iSE wasborn of these trial-and-error efforts andthe end product was amodel that achieved a quiet-runningdesign, was lightweight and compactand had four casters integrated into thedesign. Performance-wise it achievedgood fuel economy, high-quality elec-tricity output, a control panel bringingtogether all the controls on one paneland environmental performance goodenough to clear some of the world’smost stringent emissions standards, theUSA’s EPA Phase II and CARB Tier IIregulations, and all this in a sophisticat-ed new body design.

We talked to some of the developmentengineers to find out what Yamaha tech-nologies were key to the success ofthese models. “Our inverter technologyresearch began two years before theproduct development projects. Therewas some trial and error involved here

too, because this was the first time thatYamaha was tackling the basic prob-lems of what kind of waveform to cre-ate and developing the software to con-trol the waveform. We did a lot ofresearch and development to get just theright balance in the control function,”explains Mr. Mitsuo Fukaya of Engi-neering. He goes on to add that, “Our groupcompany SOQI (*1) has more than 20years of achievement and know-how inalternator development. And anothergroup company, Moric (*2) has awealth of experience in the develop-ment of alternators for Yamaha scooters.By bringing together all these techno-logical resources, we were able to builda high-quality unit consisting almostentirely of Yamaha-made parts for theperformance-related components.”

There are plenty of so-called“generators” on the worldmarkets that are made bysimply hooking up existingmultipurpose engines withavailable production generat-ing units. But Mr. Atsushi Endo ofMarketing has this to sayabout the unique character ofYamaha generators: “Whattruly sets Yamaha generatorsapart from the competition isthe fact that these are notproducts that are simplypieced together from existing

parts but ones where almost all the per-formance-related components, from theengines to the alternators, are complete-ly designed and manufactured withinYamaha Motor. In terms of the productassembly as well, we have at SOQI anintegrated manufacturing system thatincludes everything from press moldproduction to the pressing operation,welding, painting and assembly.” Thisintegrated design, engineering and man-ufacturing system is surely one of themajor strengths of Yamaha generators.

The outlook in the conventionalmodel categoryMeanwhile, Yamaha also boasts long-time sellers in the so-called convention-al model category of standard genera-tors that don’t require inverter functions.Today, some 70% of the generatorsleaving the factory for the Japanesemarket are of this conventional type,and of Yamaha’s shipments to all mar-kets, 60% are conventional types. The engineers and product planners inYMC’s Power Products Operations takea comprehensive view in the design and

development of generators. To developthe kind of reliable, easy to use productsthe customers have come expect fromYamaha, they combine engines special-ly designed for generator use withengine rpm-control governors designedfor optimum accuracy and function inresponse to changes in the requiredelectrical current. They design mufflersfor effective noise reduction, specialframes for optimum use of space andgenerating units for optimum compati-bility with the chosen engines. It is thiscombination of factors that have givenYamaha generators the outstanding reli-ability that customers trust.

Now it is Yamaha operations in Chinathat will carry on this tradition of qualityfor a considerable part of the next gen-eration of the conventional model gen-erators. In order to ensure that Yamahacan continue to supply competitive gen-erators to the markets, SOQI establishedthe joint venture company Fuzhou Ziax-in SOQI Power Products Co., Ltd. inChina’s Fujian Province in 2004. FromJanuary of the same year-generator pro-duction has already begun here underthe traditional Yamaha method of inte-grated manufacturing including all stepsfrom press mold production to thepressing operation, welding, paintingand assembly. The plan for the first yearis to produce some 50,000 units of fivevariations of three basic models, a 2-stroke model and two 4-stroke modelsof 1 kVA and 2 kVA.

Furthermore, another Chinese joint ven-ture company, Yamaha Motor TaizhouO.P.E. Co., Ltd. (YMTO) as recentlycelebrated the start of operations in Julyof the multipurpose engines that are theheart of a generator. This company isnow producing the MZ175 engine. Overthe next two years, all production ofYamaha MZ series engines will be shift-ed to China. With this move, the MZ engines born inJapan will have crossed the east ChinaSea to a new production base in Chinafrom where plans call for them eventu-ally to be shipped also to the USA.There they will be mounted in Yamahaproducts like golf cars. In this way wewill see a global spread of Yamahaengineering DNA.

“We are constantly communicating withthe overseas parts vendors. We discusswith them the important function eachpart plays in the finished product. Thisunderstanding leads to stronger motiva-tion that in turn ensures higher qualitycontrol and stability of parts supply. It isthe same thing with the assembly line inthe factory. Solid and ongoing commu-nication is essential to maintaining thepurity of this Yamaha DNA,” says Mr.Oikawa. In these ways, Yamaha generators arenow evolving along two axes, techno-logical advancement in our invertermodels and increased market competi-tiveness for our conventional models.

Eventually “Yama-ha Motor Hellas” was established as anautonomous company in 1992, andchanged its name to “MotodynamicsS.A.” in 2001 in preparation for listingon the Parallel Market of the AthensStock Exchange, which is now inprocess.Today Motodynamics S.A. is a vibrantcompany that achieved a growth in salesof over 5% year-on-year for 2003, a factthat also reflects the positive trend inconsumer goods in the Greek market.The value-based market share of Moto-dynamics S.A. remains outstanding forboth motorcycles and marine products.The total Greek market for two-wheelersincreased by 6% in 2003, following adecrease of 16% in 2002. This positivetrend is attributed to further fostering ofmotorcycle culture in Greece. Motody-namics’ market share increased from18.6% in 2002 to 19.1% in 2003 for ourcombined YAMAHA and MBK brands. In the marine market the increasingdemand for the latest four-stroke out-

boards and the positive trend inthe low and mid-class horsepow-er categories led to an overallgrowth of 10% compared to2002. Motodynamics S.A.remains the indisputable marinemarket leader with a share of29.2%. In the 15th round of the world motocrosschampionships held in Northern Ireland onSeptember 11, Stefan Everts of theYamaha L&M Motocross Team raced hisYZ450FM to a 2nd place finish in heat 1,

and a win in heat 2, to clinch the 2004world title in the MX1 class. For Everts,this marked an incredible eighth worldmotocross title and his 4th consecutivetitle since coming to Yamaha in 2001.

Then, in the 16th and finalround of the series in SouthAfrica on Sept. 26, Evertsagain finished 2nd in thefirst heat and was battling atthe front of the second heatwhen a collision ended hisrace. The stage was set from the beginning for anexciting head-to-head showdown betweenthe 2004 season’s two leaders, the Italian 3-time world champ Rossi and Spainard SeteGibernau (Honda). Even though Rossi wasin position to clinch the season with just asecond place finish in this round, he showed

that he was determined to win his fourthconsecutive world championship in style.As the pair battled, the lead would changehands twice more before Rossi squeakedpast his rival on the final lap to victory byjust 0.097 seconds. From September 15 to 19 the Intermot show in Munich (Germany), showedthat the European fascination for motorized two wheelers is still as strong asever. Some 156,000 visitors—about 9,000 more than the last show in 2002—came to see the new models from the different makers. For the Yamaha booth,which spread over a space of more than 1300 sq. m, plus 500 sq. m for theMBK brand, Yamaha Motor Deutschland GmbH (YMG) provided more than40 models, ranging from 50cc scooters up to big bikes and ATVs. Thanks tothe tremendous combined efforts of the YMG, Yamaha Motor Europe N.V.(YMENV), Yamaha Motor Distribution B.V. (YMD) and Yamaha MotorRacing teams, the YAMAHA booth was a very impressive representation ofYamaha brand values. The theme of the Yamaha booth at this year’s Intermot show was “The Art ofEngineering,” a straight inspiration from the latest Tokyo Motor Show. F ollowing the success of July’s Yamahasummer festival in Oschersleben wereported on recently in Yamaha News,

Yamaha Motor Deutschland GmbH (YMG)organized another big event–Yamaha’s‘Offroad Days 2004,’ which was held at theBeuern Motocross track between July 31 andAugust 8. Thanks to the wide variety of products avail-able, three tracks were needed–one for motor-cycle test-rides, one for ATVs and a third onefor ‘joy riders’ with their own bikes. Visitorscould test-ride an ATV or any Enduro bike(including a WR model) free of charge. Themore adventurous visitors, meanwhile, had

the opportunity to ride on a Rhino with the professionals under extreme off-road conditions.And as if that wasn’t exciting enough, there were stuntmen performances inthe freestyle show by Fabian Bauersachs and David Saalfeld on MX bikes,and Uwe Naumann and René Großmann on ATVs. Then there was the raceshow, where professionals demonstrated the real potential of off-road bikesand ATVs such as the WR450F 2-track. Even the kids were offered thechance to ride a PW50 ‘beginners’ bike’–obviously under supervised andeasy riding conditions. To cap it all, on Saturday night there was a biker party with a DJ. Attendeescould also stay overnight in the camping area. All in all, the first YamahaOffroad Days 2004 was a great success for the visitors, who turned up.Yamaha also gained valuable feedback from the event. Interviews conductedby Yamaha Motor Europe’s Wim Geutjes and consultant Sven Ermstangprovided information that will prove useful for future off-road product-plan-ning strategies. S tar Touring and Riding Association, the largest Star motorcycleowners group in the US, recently hosted its sixth annual StarDays national rally from July 20 to 23 in Roanoke, Virginia.

The family-oriented event drew over 3,000 Star series motorcycle own-ers who were treated to four activity-packed days and warm, sunnyweather in the scenic Virginia hills.“Our members are so excited for the rally to come each summer,” said

Star Touring and Riding president, Alan Cease. “Star members get tomeet old friends, ride with new ones and see hundreds of customizedStar motorcycles—there is really something for everyone.” Hosted yearly in different parts of America, this event allows StarTouring and Riding members to participate in special riding events andcontests. Sweden hosted its second Yamaha Bike Meet organized through the effortsof Yamaha Motor Scandinavia AB (YMS) and the Yamaha Custom ClubSweden. Held in a camping ground next to a lake outside the town ofKarlskoga, 250 kilometers southwest of Stockholm, this August eventallowed enthusiastic participants the opportunity to try out the full range ofproducts offered by YMS.More than 500 visitors from not only Sweden but Denmark, Norway,Finland and the Netherlands came—150 more than last year. And, althoughthere were all sorts of entertainment available, the main focus of this eventwas on test-riding the wide choice of Yamaha products, and having fun in theprocess. In addition to riding motorcycles like the popular XV1700 Road Warrior, theXT660 and the FZ6-S, visitors could go to the ATV track and test-ride

leisure and utility models including the YFM 350R and the Grizzly 125,which was especially popular with young riders. Visitors could also have funon the water with the latest marine products. There were long queues of peo-ple wanting to ride the WaveRunners, and Buster boats, Yamarin boatspowered by Yammaha outboards, were also repared to take people out for aride on the lake. On Saturday, Edge Tour 2004 also made an appearance. Japanese bass fishing pro Takahiro Omori recently won the USA’s most prestigiousfishing tourney, the 2004 Bassmaster Classic. Omori competes on the US bassfishing circuit for Team Yamaha, supported by Yamaha Motor Corp. USA

(YMUS). Until Omori’s victory in this year’s event, no foreign competitor had ever wonthis prestigious event, and the news spread quickly to bass fishing fans back in Japan. This 33rd Bassmaster Classic was held over the three days from July 30 to Aug. 1 atLake Wylie outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Omori took the lead in the first day butlost it again on the second. His luck didn’t come back until the last five minutes of com-petition on the third day, when he caught two big bass in succession and raced back tothe weigh-in to score a dramatic come-from-behind victory and the applause of a galleryof some 13,000 spectators.

“I fell in love with bass fishing after I caught my first bassat the age of nine,” recalled Omori afterwards. “By thetime I was 15, my dream was to become a pro and some-day win the Bassmaster Classic,” said Omori. Omori has compet-ed for TeamYamaha since 1997using the YamahaVMAX200 out-board. “I feel thatno other maker cancompare in terms ofreliability,” he says.

This marks the first-ever German order forpolice bikes from a Japanese manufacturer. This model is well suit-ed for police duty with its shaft drive, regulated three-way catalyticconverter and ABS. And with the cooperation of Baumeister &Trabandt, a specialist in police vehicles, these modified motorcy-cles are now equipped with all necessary items like sirens, beaconsand radio. The Yamaha-Yamarin Fosi Racing Team has chalked up a remark-able fourth victory in six years in powerboat racing’s S-850 classwhen Finland hosted the World Championship in July. Backed by

Kesko Marine, Finnish Yamaha importer and maker of Yamarin boats, theteam’s local ace pilot Joachim Brunila won three heats of the competitionheld in Loviisa to clinch his first World Championship. Commencing onJuly 10, this intense two-day event saw 16 competitors from five countriesbattle for the world title. Right from the start, competition was stiff. In theopening qualifying round, Brunila equalled the time of last year’s worldchampion, Pedro Fortuna of Portugal. But, despite losing the draw andstarting second in the first round, Brunila executed a perfect start and pulledaway to win the first heat with his 4.1m catamaran powered by a 70 hpYamaha outboard. Faultless driving also brought him first places in thenext two heats. This victory by the 26-year-old Brunila, whose previousbest was coming third in the 2002 world championship, gave the Yamaha-Yamarin Fosi Racing Team its fourth world title in six years. M r. Rodrigo Fiúza, a29-year-old miner,has just returned to

Brazil after traveling 20,000kilometers through the ninecountries of Turkey, Syria,Iran, Lebanon, Afghanistan,Pakistan, Tibet, Nepal andIndia on a Brazilian madeYamaha XTZ 125E. His mis-sion was part of the UNESCO affiliated “Caminhos daPaz” (Roads of Peace) project initiated in April 2003 withthe intention of promoting cultural exchange and peace inthe world. Mr. Fiúza left Brazil on April 21 for one of the greatestadventures of his life, carrying with him a peace messagetranslated in several languages and signed by the Brazilianpresident, Luiz Inácio Lulada Silva. The message wasgiven to common people,soldiers and governmentofficials in all the countrieshe passed through. “We, me and my YamahaXTZ, endured heat of 50degrees in the desert and cold of -5 degrees in mountainsnear the border of Iraq,” he said. During his travels he sawthe devastation of long years of war and listened to the talesof the people. From his past adventures, including a 45,000km crossing of the Americas from Antarctica to Alaska ona Yamaha XT 225, Mr. Fiúza was well prepared for thehardships and dangers of his trip. He was accompanied by a journalist who recorded most of the trip on video. Over the five days from August 23 to 27, Japan’sAssociation for Overseas Technical Scholarship(AOTS) organized the latest overseas training

program of its General Industrial Technology Program inthe Caribbean island nation of Jamaica. Held in the capi-tal, Kingston, this “Service Training for Outboard Motors”course gave instruction to 25 outboard motor mechanicsselected from nationwide applicants. The trainees weregiven instruction in the structures of 2- and 4-stroke out-boards and the theory of engine operation, followed byhands-on practice in disassembly/assembly, engine trou-bleshooting, propeller selection and test running ofmotors. These mechanics will now apply their newly acquiredskills in the servicing of the many outboard motorspresently at work in Jamaica’s coastal fishing industry andtourist resorts. On September 5, a “Yamaha Motor Town” showroom and shopopened in Taiwan’s capital city, Taipei, as a retail outlet manageddirectly by Yamaha Motor Taiwan Co., Ltd. (YMT). Despite

cloudy weather, the press and large numbers of customers turned out forthe grand opening event of this new shop in Taipei’s most fashionableshopping district, and visitors filled the showroom and the specially pre-pared outdoor event area. When the South American country of Ecuador was chosen to hostthe 2004 World Championship Regatta for Optimist Class youthsailing, Yamaha served as official sponsor and supplier of out-

board motors for the event through its exclusive distributor for Ecuador,Almacenes Juan Eljuri Cia. Ltda. During the competition, 268 young sailorsfrom 52 countries made memories that will surely last a lifetime. The finalwinner was Wei Ni of China, with Paul Snow-Hansen of New Zealand andEugenio Diaz of Spain finishing 2nd and 3rd. Meanwhile, the host countrydelighted to a proud 3rd place finished in the team competition. Thanks to the reputation of the products and Eljuri’s long record of supply-ing reliable after-sale service, Yamaha outboards were the natural choice forthe event organizers, and almost all the participating teams from around theworld were glad to see Yamahas provided for their team boats. CCS touches the hearts of fishermen in work and play

Indonesian Yamaha distributor Angkasa Mesin recentlytook its CCS (Customer and Community Satisfaction) pro-gram to the fishing village of Pacitan on the south coast of

Java. For Angkasa Mesin, the fishermen of Pacitan are cus-tomers who have responded with great enthusiasm to thecompany’s service campaigns, always anxious to learn aboutproper maintenance and part replacement. As a result, the vil-lage’s fledgling fishing industry that began just eight yearsago has already succeeded in raising itself to mid-size fishingport status, and one where 95% of the users rely on YamahaEnduro outboards. In the spirit of Yamaha’s CCS policy, Angkasa Mesin sought to repay this user loyalty with a

community-oriented event that would bring satisfactionin an area unrelated to business. The original plan was tosponsor a soccer event, but when it was learned thatbeach volleyball was the favorite sport here, plans werequickly changed. All the participants were happy for thischance to play their favorite game in beautiful Yamahabeach T-shirts prepared by Angkasa Mesin. At the 11th World Congress on ITS (Intelli-gent Transport Systems) Nagoya, Aichi2004, Japan which opened on October 18,Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (YMC) wasamong the prominent exhibitors of next-generation technologies to make the trafficenvironment safer for everyone. Since thefirst ITS World Congress was held in Paris,France in 1994, this international confer-ence has been the venue for the introductionof advanced transportation safety technolo-gies and systems. In this second Japanesehosting of the Congress, following Yoko-hama in 1995, some 250 government agen-cies, universities and corporations from 53countries mounted displays. YMC began research and development ofITS technologies almost a decade ago inanticipation of the coming era of ubiquitousITS technologies. The products of thisresearch were on display from the secondday of the ITS World Congress on aMajesty-based “ASV” (Advanced SafetyVehicle) prototype. The motor-cycle markets of the ASEAN nationshave continued to show dynamic
