Perched a-top a hill sits the country store at Byrd’s Branch Campground. It overlooks a small valley, which is home to several RV campsites. These spots welcome all who want a private, quiet space to call home for a few days. Just up the road a quarter of a mile are two, buddy-sites that are full hook ups. These sites offer solitude to friends and family who just want to hang out with each other.

Down at the main campground are rock laden fire pits, picnic tables and a small pond just right for a multitude of smooching frogs to call home. And, there is plenty of ground space under the pine trees, or up the branch for all who really want the whole camping experience and dare to sleep on the ground.

The country store provides snacks, drinks, local crafts such as:

walking sticks fashioned by Jonesville resident, Mark Walker, paintings and greeting cards by State Road local Pamela McLean, also, paintings by Russell Blevins of Ronda. The store carries blueberry jams, jellies, syrup, dressing and salsa all made from blueberries picked just down the road in Boonville at the Green Mesa Farm. If you’re looking for a book to read while lounging around in the wild you will find Sarah Byrd’s novels, and children’s picture book titled, “The Manger Mouse.” The store also carries Richard Nance’s novels, and Stephen Harris’ book of his favorite columns.

Last, but certainly not least you can stop by the store for a hand-scooped dip or two… or three of world famous DELUXE and FRONT PORCH ice cream made in Mooresville, NC. Rumor has it this is one of the last hand-churned ice cream factories left. Everyone’s favorite is

Charleston Sea Salt and Caramel, running close behind is the Blackberry Crumble, and of course the all time favorites, Black Cherry and Home-style Butter Pecan.

Byrd’s Branch Campground and Country Store is located along the Mountains to Sea Trail which runs from Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks. The Elkin Valley Trails Association is very excited that the five-mile segment from the park in Elkin to the campground is scheduled to open next year, and the twenty or so mile trek to Stone Mountain State Park will open up in sections over the next few years.

U.S. Congressman Mark Walker was a special guest at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital’s celebration Wednesday for being selected as a recipient of two Women’s Choice Awards for being one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Patient Experience and having one of the nation’s best stroke centers.

In introducing Walker, Hugh Chatham Chief Executive Officer Paul Hammes said he had learned a couple of things about the 6th District congressman. “His mother-in-law (Linda Sears of Winston-Salem) was born here,” he said.

“And I still came anyway,” Walker quipped.

Hammes responded in jest, “I’m not sure if I like that remark, but …”

Walker’s wife, Kelly, a nurse practitioner for Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, also has landed on Hugh Chatham’s helipad, Hammes said, “so she’s actually been here from a different vantage point shall we say.”

The congressman also “plays a little trumpet on the side,” Hammes said. “He’s very cool.”

Walker responded, “51 percent think that, so that’s a good thing.”

Wednesday was Walker’s first official visit to Elkin since being sworn in as the 6th District congressman in January. Winning with 58.67 percent of the vote, he defeated Democrat Laura Fjeld in last year’s Nov. 4 election to claim the seat held by Howard Coble for 30 years.

Addressing Hugh Chatham staff and Elkin leaders gathered in the hospital’s Board of Trustees meeting room, Walker thanked them for representing the community so well. “We live in a world today where there’s a lot of talk,” he said. “Every month, it seems like there’s an awareness this, an awareness that … but there are very few times we actually see the action steps with it.

“After winning this award not once, not twice but for the third year in a row, I think that says you guys have gotten the action steps done as well.”

In addition to the Women’s Choice Award for Patient Experience and Best Stroke Center, Walker said he heard Elkin had also received a “Best Wired Community” award. “I asked Kyle (Hall, his field representative), ‘Does that mean they’re probably just excited?’” he joked. “He said, ‘No, that’s a technical term.’”

Walker said it is a privilege and a great responsibility for him to represent the 800,000 people in the 6th Congressional District. “And as the representative of this area,” he said, “it makes me proud on the D.C. side that you guys are getting great leadership with Paul and his background and experience and how he has integrated that philosophy with what you guys are already doing.”

In answering a question about what he considers to be the most important legislation he is working on, Walker said it is a bill he is cosponsoring that would allow states to opt out of federal education mandates. “That’s a bill we’re working very hard on,” he said.

Walker said he also is working on legislation addressing the growing problem of human trafficking, in which North Carolina ranks 10th in the nation. Before leaving, he and Hall were given a tour of the hospital.

Hall, in a telephone interview afterward, said he had just posted on social media all the places they visited on their tour through Elkin. “It was a great day,” he said. The first stop was a tour of the Pittsburgh Glass Works manufacturing plant. “Congressman Walker was amazed at the opportunities that are available for citizens there and for that company,” Hall said. “They’re looking to expand in the future, and I think Congressman Walker was very impressed with the opportunities they have with Surry Community College to help train employees to work in that plant.”

The most moving part of the day for Walker was being able to present a Purple Heart to the family of the late Thorbourn Cockerham, World War II veteran.

Walker also had lunch at Speedy Chef with Myra Cook, president of the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Misty Matthews, Office Manager for the chamber; along with Dr. Randy Bledsoe, superintendent of the Elkin City Schools; Dr. Travis Reeves, superintendent of the Surry County Schools; and Dr. David Shockley, president of Surry Community College.

Hall said Walker also enjoyed being interviewed by 100.9 WIFM Radio about what led him to run for the 6th District Congressional seat previously held by Howard Coble for 30 years and his experiences since he was sworn into office in January.

Walker spent 15 years in the ministry before becoming a congressman, stepping down as the pastor of Lawndale Baptist Church in Greensboro in January of 2014 to run for the 6th District seat.

Kathy Chaffin may be reached at 336-258-4058.

Words from the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival Chair The volunteers and Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce staff that comprise the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival committee have been working diligently throughout the year, and we are very excited about this year’s festival!

Start your day at the pumpkin weigh off, located in the Liberty parking lot on East Main Street. Then make your way down Main Street, where you will find craft and food vendors showcasing handmade goods and scrumptious foods, including pumpkin ice cream and pumpkin spice lattes.

This year’s festival will feature an expanded children’s activities area. Start at Elkin Fire Department’s Ladder truck – located at the intersection of Main Street and Bridge Street -and meet several of your local volunteer firefighters. Then make your way to the patio next to the former 21 & Main restaurant to paint a pumpkin for $1.00 and take pictures in a festival cutout. Leave your pumpkin to dry and head down S. Bridge Street to find inflatables, putt putt, a train ride and a variety of booth games.

Sponsored by G&B Energy, Time Sawyer - a local favorite, will be performing from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in front of the Reeves Theater.

A special thanks to the sponsors of the festival -- Because none of this would have been possible without them, I would like to personally thank the volunteers that make up the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival Committee – Missy Calhoun, Natalie Golikov, Betsy Robertson, Cicely McCulloch, and Ricky Roberts; as well as the staff of the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce – Misty Matthews and Myra Cook; for their diligence in planning the 2015 Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival. A special thanks to Calie Robertson for designing, creating and painting the cutouts; and to G&B Energy for providing volunteers to assist us on festival day.

On Saturday, September 12th the community welcomed the

opening of a section from Grassy Creek Vineyard and Winery off

Klondike Road in Elkin to Byrd’s Branch Campground located

on Martin Byrd Road. This is a 1.5 mile walk across the newly

constructed bridge over the rippling waters of Grassy Creek,

through beds of wood ferns, and a grove of White Pines which has

United Fund raises 10 percent of its goal

The threat of afternoon showers didn’t stop golfers from participating in G&B Energy’s annual Irons in the Fire Charity Golf & Social benefiting the Yadkin Valley United Fund.

The 23nd annual event, held Sept. 10 at Cedarbrook Country Club, drew participation from 128 golfers and many local sponsors to raise $15,000 for the Yadkin Valley United Fund. This contribution puts the United Fund closer to reaching their $150,000 fundraising goal for the 2015 campaign.

The tantalizing aroma of smoke, grilling spices and fresh grilled meats filled the air over State Road as the grill masters from G&B Energy set up grilling stations throughout the golf course for this special event. Golfers and volunteers enjoyed slow-smoked pork barbeque, shrimp, baby back ribs, hot dogs, chicken wings and roast beef.

Once the last holes were played, the event was capped off with an awards ceremony

announcing the winning teams. The ceremony included a raffle for prizes, including golf equipment and attire, grills and even cash. All golfers who registered for the tournament were automatically placed into the raffle.

G&B Energy President Jeff Eidson is thrilled by the local community support for this annual event. “For 23 years, we have been blessed with support from the employees of G&B Energy, volunteers, sponsors, suppliers and players. These folks are the backbone of our community, and they are the reason for the successes of the G&B Energy Irons in the Fire Golf & Social. I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to everyone involved for their hard work and giving spirit,” said Eidson.

The G&B Energy’s inaugural charity golf tournament was held in 1993 at Cedarbrook Country Club. To date, the tournament has generated more than $407,000 in donations for charity.

YVUF ‘Dine Out’ huge success David Steelman, executive director, announced the Yadkin Valley United Fund “Dine Out” campaign was a huge success.

Fourteen restaurants participated in the week-long campaign Aug. 23-29 to kick off the annual campaign. This year’s goal for the Yadkin Valley is $150,000.

So far $3,279 has been donated from 12 of the 14 participating restaurants. Last year, 2014, with 10 restaurants $2,052 was raised.Steelman expressed thanks to Generations, John Boy’s, 222 Public House, Mazzini’s, Speedy Chef, Theo’s, Harry’s, 67 Pizza, Cedarbrook Country Club, Dodge City Steakhouse, Pirate’s Landing, Terry’s Café, Prime Thai, and 268 Grill.

The YVUF serves the communities of Arlington, Elkin, Jonesville, Mountain Park, Ronda, State Road, Thurmond and Traphill. For 2016 the YVUF committed funds to 25 local non-profit agencies and three scholarships to local high schools. Steelman also said that if anyone or group wants to do a special project or fund raiser, or would like to have him as a speaker, contact hime at 336-469-2860 or [email protected].
