Description of the project

Product/outcomes After presenting carefully considered research into the work of designers you will produce annotated design ideas for a clock, develop these ideas and create a foam-board trial model to help you to effectively plan the manufacture of your clock. You will then be able to create your clock out of more resistant materials.

Investigation: For this project you will base ideas for your clock design on the work of a contemporary artist or designer. You will be using a wide range of sources including the following links in order to investigate examples of excellent contemporary design:

Techniques, Skills & Knowledge

Investigate and take inspiration from the work of other artists, designers and craftspeople You will also be asked to research the work of artists/designers using the internet and will be given a range of artists/designers to investigate. If you have other favourite designers that are not listed you can also include examples of their work in your research. As you research, you will create a document or power-point displaying the work of 10 of your favourite designers (you should display a variety of designs you might like). Developing ideas and planning for production Using the work of preferred designers you will then create an image board to inspire your own designs for a clock. You will move your ideas from 2 to 3 dimensions by creating a model of template pieces from foam-board or a similar suitable material. After creating this working prototype you will then carefully analyse and select suitable materials Cutting lists will be made, sequential planning and safety issues annotated. Vacuum forming, CAD/CAM, lasertran, etc may be used depending on outcomes. Although you will be producing a “one off” individual item you will view clips of industrial/commercial manufacturing using similar materials. To check your understanding of these processes, you will have question and answer sheets to complete. Understanding appropriate use of materials, tools and techniques: Safe use of equipment will be demonstrated. To complete practical tasks you are required to complete the planning of your work and follow the workshop safety rules at all times. Workshop evaluation sheets will be supplied during this time. Understanding how technological advance and market pull changes the design of products New products are continually being developed to meet the needs of the consumer. Over the past hundred years continuous technological development has had a significant impact on the way we live and consumer expectation has increased. You will be asked to create a product history or timeline to show how the design of a product has developed over time in response to technological push and market pull.

Extension and Challenge Work Option 1: When you have finished your clock have a look at the following link to see other examples of creative hand made clocks and the comments of their creators: LINK Now create instructions using sequential drawings, photographic images, notes, flow charts, video etc. to allow others to create an exact copy of your own clock. Option 2: Investigate and explain which processes you think could be used to manufacture your clock in quantity for commercial production. Option 3: In the past clocks and watches used a wind up mechanism to power them. Find out how wind up mechanisms are now being used again to power other products and produce a presentation of your choice that could be shared with the class.
