Year 11 Maths Learning Map
Algebraic Manipulation
EquationsStudents’ will build on their understanding of algebra to solve a range of different types of equation. These will include equations with multiple unknown terms, simultaneous equations, quadratic equations as well as situations where students will have to construct and solve equations from the information given (e.g. for an angles question).
GraphsThis unit supports students to build connections between the abstract equations and the more visual graphical representations. Students will consolidate their knowledge and bring together the interrelated strands of sequences, equations and graphs. Students will construct and interpret linear, quadratic and simultaneous graphs as well as those for other polynomials / standard formats.
NumberFractionsThis block focuses on performing calculations with fractions (including improper and mixed numbers). Within this unit students will consider the magnitude of fractions and their equivalents in order to place them in order of size.
Powers and IndicesThis unit focuses on correct use of index notation as well as allowing students to explore prime factor decomposition and its connection with highest common factor and lowest common multiple. Students will also explore how standard index form can be used to simplify / understand numbers that are particularly large or small (e.g. distances between planets).
Ratio and ProportionThis unit builds on students KS3 knowledge and allows them to consider problems built around direct proportion and ratio. This gives students an opportunity to apply their knowledge to more contextualised problems such as exchange rates, scaling up quantities in a recipe.
PercentagesStudents consider the application of percentages. This builds strongly on the understanding from HT2 and allows the application of knowledge to financial problems such as interest rates or depreciation.

Statistics
HandlingStudents will consider a range of different common methods of representing data (e.g. pie charts, scatter graphs etc…). As part of this students will be asked to investigate common misconceptions or misleading elements of presentations that may be found in the wider media.
ProbabilityStudents will consider the difference between dependant events and independent events to support them to challenge commonly held misconceptions around probability. Students will also explore the ideas of fairness and bias to understand why not all situations are as transparent as they seem. Finally students will look at a range of methods for modelling / representing and quantifying these scenarios to help them better understand the nature of each situation.
Shape, Space and MeasuresPythagoras’ TheoremStudents will investigate and then apply Pythagoras’ theorem to allow them to calculate dimensions of a right-angled triangle. Students will be supported to understand its possible historical applications and to subsequently apply this to a range of more contextualised problems.
AnglesStudents will consider a range of angle facts. In the case of the most important students will be supported to explore proofs of these facts. Key elements include angles in polygons, interior and exterior angles, angles between parallel lines.
TrigonometryStudents will explore how trigonometric ratios can be identified based on similar triangles. Subsequently students will apply their knowledge to be able to calculate missing sides and angles for right-angled triangles using sine, cosine and tangent.

Responsive Teaching Based on TA2 Assessment
DIRT - Assessment Review Paper 1 DIRT – Assessment Review Paper 2 DIRT – Assessment Review Paper 3 Additional content will be identified through the monitoring of the Assertive Mentoring materials and identification of persisting gaps in knowledge.

This sequence of learning is designed to build on fundamental knowledge and allow students to make connections between content from the KS3 programme of study. Because of this, students are able to consider questions that require them to apply knowledge from different areas of the curriculum (e.g. calculate the proportion of a shapes area that is shaded when the dimensions are given as fractions).
L I N K S T OP R I O R L E A R N I N G
HT3 is designed to give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge to the wider world and to support students to better understand the information they are exposed to. This builds on the KS3 National Curriculum.HT4 is designed to extend the thinking of students. It allows opportunities to build on their algebraic knowledge (form and solve equations including angle facts, constructing a mathematical response in trigonometry/Pythagoras) as well as to extend their understanding of proportion and similar shapes.

The learning in this term is based completely on addressing identified gaps in prior knowledge and on supporting students to answer questions that require them to use content from more than one area of the curriculum. As such anything considered in this term will be based on prior learning.
