HOME DErAKTMENT. Wo aro to have a street sprinklor. There is a somi-daily mail now between Harrisonburg and Staunton. We are glad to see Rev. J. F. Kemper out again after hia recent indisposition The warm flirting season approaches when beauty must keep its powder dry P. B. Delaney, of the Commonjeeallli, returned from Philadelphia on Monday last. Can't some clever fellow persuade some pretty girl to marry him, just to enliven things a little ? The 4th of July fever spreads with each Bucceeding day. Lot our citizens prepare to decorate their housoR. J. Mortimer Kilgour, Eiq., will deliver an addreas on the subject of Temperance, at CroRS Keys, on Saturday night, July 5, at 8 o'clock P. M. The now school house is going bravely forward, and will be ready for occupancy by the time the fall FCfision of the public Bchool opens. It is expected that several Sabbath Schools will unite in the PioDio at Tay- lor Springs, on Saturday, July 5. Let them come. They will be heartily wel- comed. J. Mortimer Kilgour, Esq., delivered a very fine temperance Iccture in the Court House in this place on Monday night last, to quite a large and appreciative audience, and all were well pleased at his eflbrt. The farmers of Rockingham will not fail 10 read the advertisement of McKeever & Bro., in another column. They are well known, reliable gentlemen, and will do what they promise. The improvements recently undertaken on the Revere House are now about re- oeivitig the finishing touch, and the build ing has most unquestionably improved, it now being not only one of the largest, but likewise one of the handsomest hotels in the State. The Lutheran Church in this place is now undergoing thorough repair, being now in the hands of the carpenters and painters. When finished it will be a very handsome church. We anderstund that at no very distant day this congregation ezpeots to erect a new building. Services were held in only one church in this place on Sunday morning last, a very unusual occurrence. Rev. Mr. Moser, of the Lutheran Church, preaohod in Andrew Chapel both morning and night, to very large congregations. He is a pleasant and forcible speaker, and bids fair to become a divine of considerable distinction. We regret to learn of the d«ath of Mr. Ad. Dettor, which occurred at the W. L. Asylum, in Staunton, on Sunday lapt.— He leaves a devoted wife and several little children to mourn his death. He was a consistent-member of the M. B. Church, up to the time when ho became alBicted with a mental disease from which be never recovered. He wa« greatly esteemed by all who know him. The Lftdias and frionda of Rockingham Circuit will have, at Taylor Springs, on the 5th of July, a Lunch Table. Ice Cream, Lemonade, Cake», Confectionery, &e., which will be furnished at most rea- sonable rates. The proceeds of the Lunch Table and Refreshments will be devoted to aiding the Sunday School cause at that place and to building a Parsonage in Rookingham Circuit. The members and friends of the various music classes of Messrs. Wartmann & Hall, will have a re-union at Taylor's Springs on Saturday, the 5th of July. It is proposed to spend the day in singing, croquet and other plonsures. The Good Templars-of Cross Keys hav- ing fixed, upon the same, day for aPic-Nic at Cross Keys, they are most cordially in> vited to unite with us at Taylor Springs They will b'e afiForded ample time to carry out their programme, whatever it may be. The wheat crop is "ripe unto the har- vest" in every portion of this county, and in many localities the farmers have com- pleted this unpleasant task. They will be done with .this business before the 4th of July, and of course will all be present in Harrisonburg on that day to enjoy a short season of undisturbed plqasuro after the hot härtest timo- The wheat crop, though not as heavy in some portions of the coun- ty as last year, is nevertheless good. At tha regular monthly term of the County Court of Warren county, held at Front Royal on Tuesday, the 17th instant, a special grand jury of seven was impan- elled, sworn and charged, and after bear- ing the testimony of sundry witnesses, foun4 an indictipent for murder against Jonis Hopkman, the prisoner was arraigns ed, plqad not guilty, and the witnesses were recognized tooppear at the next term of that court, when the trial of the party indicted will begin. T|iö lawn parties at Bridgewater last week were very well attended, and were financially a.gratifying success, but we imagine it was rather an unusual sight to eae the bnys with overcoats closely buttoned around them, and the gjrls beavily shawled, standing in the starlight beneath the over- shadowing trees, silently eating'ice croam and endeavoring to freeze out their lives and »ffeotions for the sake of the B. C. B. •^e understand such was the case, and wo think the aforesaid B C. B. owe these par- ties » debt of gratitude that it will take a long life to repay. Now this week the matter woald have been different. Roc&iliaifl's Time io Celelirate! THE VALLEY TO BE WITH US 20,000 People Expected. MILITARY, KNINILT TEMPLARS, FIFLULDRONS OR CAVALRY, AND ILARDI GRAS, IN LINE. To-morrow week is the Fourth of July and tbo 103rd anniversary of American In' depcndonce, and on that day it has ever been iho delight and privilof,'o of our poo pie to ceaso from their labors and give themsolve.-i up to unalloyed pleasure and enjoyment. As tlie people of tho Valley we presume, are pretty well aware, Harri sonburg is going to havu on that occasion, for tho first timo since tho close of the war, a real ante helium 4th of July jollification, and as this i.s not intended for Harrisonburg alono, but will bo participated in by tbo wholo people of tho Valley, we hope our contemporaries will lend us their aid in making it one of the most memorable days in tho history of this section. The various committees which have been appointed by tho citizens of this placo to perfect all arrangements necessary to make this day and occasion remembered, have been assiduously laboring for tno past month to complete all tho requisite pro- "iminarie.s, and we are ;;lad to bo able to áta te to the people of llockingham, and our sister counties, that everything has been gotten in "shipjshape," and all things sat isfactorily arranged, and that this national holiday bids fair to be celebrated in our midst with as muoh eclal as has ovor been known in the O d Dominion. AVe are glüd and proud to announce to those who expect to be in Harrisonburg on that day, that CAPT. JAMKS BUMGARDNER, of Staunton, has consented to become the orator on that occasion, and that, too, at a great sacrifico of his business, and we know that the peoplo of old Rockingham will ever have an attentive ear and a warm weK come for one who so nobly stood at tho post of duty for our beloved old common- wealth during the dark days just behind us, and who has beon so faithful to every trust bestowed upon him since that time. To those of our readers who have ever bad tho happy fortune of hearing Capt. Bum- gardner, or read hia recent speech on me- morial day in Staunton, it is superfluous for us to mention that he is a polished gen- tleman and thrilling orator, and that all who hoar him will be benefitted andgiat- ificd. The MILITARY PARADE. will be one of tho most imposing ever witnessed in the Valley of Virginia, enough volunteer militia companies having already signified thoir intention to bo pre> sent to insure from three to five hundred infantrymen in line, and other companies have been invited and will doubtless bo present. In addition to this tho Lodge of Knight Templars of Harri- sonburg have been invited to join in the parade on horseback and it is hoped and expected that they will accept, besides various squadrons of cavalry from differ- ent portions of this county who have volunteered to participate in tho process- ion. It is also expected that there will be a comical feature attached to the parade consisting of various ludicrous impersona- tions, after the famous Mardi Gras, which annually affords so much sensation and amusement in Now Orleans, Memphis and other cities of the South. The following BANDS OF ¡MUSIC. have already accepted tho invitations sent them to be present with us at that time : Stonewall Brigade Band, of Staunton, Shepherdstown Cornet Band, Mechanic's Silver Cornet Band, of Charlestown, W. Va., Lee Cornet Band, of New Market, Biidgowater Cornet Band, and the Ashby Cornet Band of Mt.Crawford. There will also bo a grand. PYROTECHNIC DISPLAY at night, and we understand all the ex- cursion trains for tho occasion will remain till after dark if desired in order to give those who may wish to witness this display of fireworks an opportunity of doing so. We hope that the people of Rocking- ham will not be behind our sister counties in taking interest in and making this a grand day for Harrisonburg, as wo think they should certainly have pride enough in their county seat to feel a desire to show their neighbors that Harrisonburg and Rockingham can do things up in grind style when they are so disposed. We hopo to ioe our fellow brothers of the newspaper fraternity with us that day, and feel safe in insuring them a pleasant and profitable time. Everything is working smoothly, and as the rail soads have all very kindly given exceedingly low excursion rates for the occasion, we know there will be an immense throng in attendanee, and are conlident that thoy will bo glad and proud when it is over that they were here. Since the above was written wo learn that the Knigbt Templars have unani- mously consented to head the procession, on horse-back, dressed in their brilliant uniforms, and have written to headquar- ters to get i dispensation to do so. IMPROVEMENT.—The Internal Revenue ofiice at this place has this week undergone very decided improvements in tho way of painting, carpeting, rc-furnishing, &c.— These additions are made at the expense of the Collector boro, .Mr. Botts, and it is now a luxury to sit in the easy chairs and be fanned by the soft breezes that float in through tho south windows. We are glad these changes have been made, as wo now have one of the handsomest as well as the best conducted Revenue offices in tbo coun- try, to »ay npthing of the establishment's being in tho hands of as clever and gentle manly a sel of officers as this great govern- ment has in its employ. ATTENTION FIREMAN .—There will ba a meeting of tho Rescue Firo Company of Harrisonburg on this (Thursday) evening at o'clock, at tho engine house, at which tiino there will be a re election of officers, and tho company re-organizod under tho now laws of tho State of Virginia govern- ing the same. It is hoped that all tho members of tho company will bo present, who possibly can attend, as a full meeting is vory much desired. RESIGNATION AND ELECTION .—At a called meeting of tho Harrisonburg Guards, held in thoir armory on Monday night last, tho resignation of Third Lioutenant, Jamea Hay was presented, and after expressions of regret at tho loss of so faithful, compe- tent and popular an officer, it was acceptod. The Company immediately went into an election, and chose as the successor of Mr. Hay, Mr. James Sullivan, who has heretofor been 4th Sargeant of the Com- pany. This election will givo universal satisfaction, as there is not a more popu- lar young man in town than friend Jim, and ho will also make an efficient, pleas- ant and handsome officer. IMPROVEMENTS .—Philo Bradley, Esq., has just completed the additions to his house, making it one of tho most delight- ful re.sidences in town. The house is con- veniently arranged, and presents a hand- some appearance. Tho carpenter work was done by Messr.'i. Ilockman & Bûcher, tho plastering by those master plasterers John White & Son, of Timberville, and tho painting by Samuel Irick. One of the handsomest dwellings on last Market street is that of Wm. Bucher, now nearly completed. Tho arrangement of the rooms, &c., has been made with a view to comfort and convenienco, and in these respects Mr. Bucher has eminently succeeded. The workmanship is first-class in every regard. Mr. Bucher, of the firm of Hockman & Bucher, did the wood- work himself. Tho plastering, ono of the finest jobs in the Valley, was done by John A. Whita & Son, of Tiinberville, whose reputation as plasterers is well known in this section. F. Staling of this place did the painting. Of course that part of work was well done. the SUNDAY SCHOOL MEETING.—A meeting for the formation of a Sunday School will bo held in the school-house on the Harri- sonburg and AVarm Springs Turnpike, near Joseph I^owman's on Sunday morn- ing next, June 2{|, at JO o'qlook. Sovocal addresses may bo expeoted b'y friends of the esuse. The people and tho children of tho neighborhood are invited to attend. THE STH AT TAYLOR SPRINGS.—We are authorized to say that in addition to the other attractions at Taylor Springs oii tho 5th of July, Jv Mortimer Kilgour, Esq., one cf the ablest Tomperanod Lecturers in the State, will address the peoplo proin ent on tha^ day. COME TO THE MOUNTAINS .—The hot sun is driving the peoplo of the cities out into the country, where thoy can be re- leived from the cares and perplexities of business, and where they can enjoy the re- freshing breezes which come from moun- tain or sea. It is hard to imagine tho re- lief afforded the people of the cities, who are crowded for months between brick walls, and breathing the sweltering air of the city, when thoy get away from tho buBtlo and rush of busine»». and can drink in the fresh, pure air of the country. To all such, our beautiful Valley pres sents tho highest attractions. Hero we have tho prettiest pictures nature has drawn any where in all the earth; green valleys with towering, frost-clad moun- tains filling up the background, from whose lofty summits come breezes pure, and sweet, and healthful, to fan the brow and invigorate the emaciated and frail ones. And everywhere, through glen and hol- low, are purling brooks and springs of sparkling water, cool, and health invigora» ting. And we have a country which can pro- duce all that is needed to furnish the table with everything necessary for the comfort and gratification of tho most delicate taste. For those seeking medical waters we can furnish sulphur, chalybeate, magnesia and other mineral springs, and hotel and boarding-houso accommodations where every comfort can be obtained at most reas sonable rates. Those preferring tho activity of town life, will find in Harrisonburg and sur- rounding towns, numbers of pleasant stop- ping places, where all the benefits of the country can be obtained and the conveni» ences of churches, stores, &c,, enjoyed. But wo have not room to enumerate ono half of tho charms of this beautiful Valley. To the health or pleasure seek- ers from tho hot and crowded cities, we repeat, with all our hearts, "Come to tho Mountains." OUR YOUNG LADIES .—Deserved complis ments have ever been paid our youug men roturped from the difforent Colleges and Universities laden with the honors of their studies. Modestly have they borne tho same, and it has, doubtlohs, in many cases been an incentive to rouse them to toil incessantly until thoy stand second to none. Well may wc feel proud of our boys, when every breeze wafts to us tbo news of thoir increased and incieasing suc- cess, and the praise of their friends, added to their determination, and the ambition common to every freeborn nature, has led them on to accomplish that which a quarter of a century ago was reeked an impoEsibility. And not only do they stand foremost in thoir college duties, but their universally acknowledged business tact and talent, and thoir lives of honor and morality, have made them tho envy of many less fortunate. Too much can- not be said in complimcnt to theru, and we will ever be found first to givo honor to whom honor is duo. And our joung ladies aro entitled to, and in justice should have, thoir share of praise. Although their studies aro less laborious than those of young men, yet thoy deserve credit for acccaplishing them in so much shorter timo. Tho recent success oftvvoof our most boiutiful and accom- plished yoyng ladies, at the Episcopal Fe- malo Institute, at Winchester, calls forth the admiration of every one who admires intellect and energy. Miss Nannie Ott, the popular daughter of L. H. Ott, Esi] , returns this session with a star scholarship medal, a neatness and deportment medal, instrumental music and star music medals, (the latter the first ovec given by Prof. Vyheat,) and a diploma. Miss 'Williette Sprinkle tbo daughter of Capt. C. A. Sprinkle, of this place, accomplished in ono session of nine months that which has often required of others years of study, bringing back with her a neatness and de- portment medal, a star seholarship medal, and the diploma of a full graduate. Wo could mention many others but think these two serve to show wl;at oyr young ladies ca;i acciompliBh. The young ladies of Harrisonburg are also noted lor their beauty, and if wc were able and competent to decide Miss C. or Miss T. the prettiest girl in town, wo would not dare to assert it, and if any one has heard us accidentally e::pra33 an opin- ion please say uotljiing abov\t it, Tho Rev. Dr. Bowman, of the Harri- sonburg Presbyterian Church, being ab- •sent to address the Young Men's Chris- tian Association at Lexington, Rev. Wm. T. Price, of New Erection, occupied the pulpit last Sabbath night. The following is an outline of tho sermon : "Bo carerol for nothlne but in «vsrythloi: by pray.r nnd luppllcatlon irlth thanliiglrlni: let your rtquests be made knawn unto God. "And tho pease of Oo4 whlgh paiseth understanding shall keep your hearts a«<l minds through Christ Jesus."—Phil. IT, 0 7. This letter is dirsctod to all the sainU Ohriit Jesus ffho nrera at Phllllppl, irlMi the bishops and deacons. Tho apostolic method vaa to warn and urge all persons out of Christ to rspent »nd ballcvo in the Lord Jesus, and then the way was pre- pared for letters and exhortations urging every Ckris tian duty. Under apostolio ausplcsa persons becomo «hristlan in order to do good, ao eneeurageraent was cirm to do good in order to become Chriitians. These saints at rkillippl, along with tho Bishops and the deacons, were atmonlihed aost earnestly not to be inOuonoed by undue care and anxiety about anything earthly. It la Tory noticeable how persistent the Scrip- tures laber to set forth the danger of worldllness which flnds expression la being careful about matters per- taining to mere earthly things at the expsaie of the immortal nature. Notioe foi example the reasons given why God sent the flood upon the peoplo destroyed thereby. All that Cbrlst alleges against them was simply this: "They did eat, they drank, they married wifes, they were given in marriage «ntll tke day that Noah entered the ark, and tke flood came and destroyed tkem all " So also in the days of Lot, the people did eat, they drank, thoy bought, they sold, they planted, they bullded; but the same day Lot went out of Sodom it rained Are and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. In writing to tho Fhillipplans tho Apostle seoms overcome uy reason as ho writes: "For many walk of whom I kare told you often and now tall you weeping,- that ihe, are the enemiei of tho cross of Christ, whose cud is destruction, whose Ood is their belly and whose glory is in th^lr shame, who mind earthly things," From the teachings of Christ and his servants it Is very manifest that being habitually careful about the things of earth, indicates the lowest degree of spiritu- al degradation, and ripens oommunllies fer all that Is terrible in tko displays of divine wrath. Something more excellent than worldllness Is pelnted out by contrast; But la every thing by prayer and sup- plication with thanksgiving let your requests be known unto God Prayer is our remedy in every emergency. Ood of His own good will and pleasure has flxed upon prayer and supplication as tho means by which He supplies the needs and answers tho desires of mankiad. Frajer prevails with Ood beeause it is freely appoint- ed by Him as the speoifled oondition upon which He will dispense His blessings to the children of men. Jesus and many of the modern tachers of men differ in their views as to the utility of prayer. Tho atheistle seienilsts say, since God knows that we have need ofali His blessings, there is no rational need of prayer. Jesus rests on this conclusion, that since God knows we need his blessings there is no uso for vain repeti- tions or much speaking, but to pray after this manner, '•Our Father which art 1 n Heaven," The result will be peace ; and the peace of God wh Ich passes all understanding will keep your hearts apd minds throigh Christ Jesus. Ko word has a sweeter meaning than peace. Of tho millions who have lived, none are to be regarded hopelessly wretched save such !rer known something of the sweetaess sie: as may hav of peace. I had not traveled long in Indiana before my at- tention was attracted lo the frequent and contin- Qoua blowing of the locomotivn whisilo. Upon ioqairy concerning the reason for oo much blowing, I learned thit the Stale Legislalute had passed a law reqairing the blowing of the whistle while passing through every corpo- ration, and beginning forty rods before evtry oroBBlng and oontinning until it is passed. Oiiieo of over thirly-flva hundred inhabitants were al- lowed to pass an ordinance prohibiting so much whielling. The law took effect tho Ist of the month, whan neiirly every locomotive in the Slate was turned on tho road at 12 o'clock at night and aet to whistling. In some placea ia the Stale the noise wag almoit aobearablc. In Indianapo lis the public aohools had to bo closed until tbe Oily OoHDcil coold paae an ordinance preventing the noise. T| iö lawn parties at Bridgewater last week were very well attended, and were financially a . g r a t i f y i n g success, but we imagine it was rather an unusual sight to eae the bnys with overcoats closely buttoned around them, and the gjrls beavily shawled, standing in the starlight beneath the over-shadowing trees, s i lently eating'ice croam and endeavoring to freeze out their lives and »ffeotions for the sake of the B . This letter is dirsctod to all the sainU 1« Ohrii t Jesus ffho nrera a t Phlll lppl, irlMi the bishops and deacons. Tho apostolic method vaa to warn and urge all persons out of Christ to rspent »nd ballcvo in the Lord Jesus , and then the way was pre-pared for letters and exhortat ions urging every Ckris tian duty. Under apostolio ausplcsa persons becomo «hris t lan in order to do good, ao eneeurageraent was c i r m to do good in order to become Chr i i t i ans .

These sa ints a t r k i l l i pp l , a long with tho Bishops and the deacons, were a t m o n l i h e d a o s t earnest ly not to be inOuonoed by undue care and anxie ty about anyth ing ear thly. I t la Tory noticeable how persistent the Scrip-tures laber to set for th the danger of worldllness which flnds expression la being careful about matters per-ta ining to mere ea r th ly things a t the expsa ie of the immortal na ture .

Notioe foi example the reasons given why God sent the flood upon the peoplo destroyed thereby. All tha t Cbrlst alleges aga ins t them was simply t h i s : "They did eat , they d rank , they married wifes, they were given in marr iage «nt l l tke day tha t Noah entered the a rk , and tke flood came and destroyed tkem all "

So also in the days of Lot , the people did eat, they drank, thoy bought, they sold, t hey planted, they bul lded; but the same day Lot went out of Sodom it rained Are and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.

In writing to tho Fhi l l ipplans tho Apostle seoms overcome uy reason as ho wr i tes : " F o r many walk of whom I k a r e told you often and now tall you weeping,-that i h e , are the enemiei of tho cross of Christ , whose cud is destruction, whose Ood is their belly and whose glory is in th^lr shame, who mind ear th ly t h i n g s , "

From the teachings of Christ and his servants it Is very manifest tha t being habi tua l ly careful about the things of ea r th , indicates the lowest degree of sp i r i tu -al degradat ion, and r ipens oommunllies fer all tha t Is terrible in tko displays of d ivine wrath.

Something more excellent than worldllness Is pe ln t ed out by contras t ; But la every thing by prayer and sup-plication with thanksgiving let your requests be known unto God

Prayer is our remedy in every emergency. Ood of His own good will and pleasure has flxed upon prayer and supplication as tho means by which He supplies the needs and answers tho desires of mankiad .

F r a j e r prevails with Ood beeause it is freely appoint-ed by Him as the speoifled oondition upon which He will dispense His blessings to the children of men.

Jesus and many of the modern tachers of men differ in their views as to the u t i l i ty of prayer .

Tho atheistle seienilsts say, since God knows tha t we have need o f a l i His blessings, there is no ra t ional need of prayer .

Jesus rests on th is conclusion, that since God knows we need his blessings there is no uso for vain repeti-t ions or much speaking, but to pray after t h i s manne r , '•Our Father which a r t 1 n Heaven , "

The result will be peace ; and the peace of God wh Ich passes a l l unders tanding will keep your hearts apd minds t h r o i g h Christ Jesus . Ko word has a sweeter meaning than peace. Of tho mill ions who have l ived, none are to be regarded hopelessly wretched save such
