1 can 't seem to shake the sentiment that Father’s Day is a com m ercial echo o f som e other parents' ce leb ration. So, this year, the kids and I have decided to celebrate Dad in our own unique way. not for ju st a day, but for a few days leading up to F ather’s Day Sunday. These are f un ideas you can spring on Dad to m ake him feel good. T hey a ren ’t com plicated and you d o n 't even need any special tools!

* M AKE A LIFE SIZE POR TRA IT O F DAD — Several days before F ather’s Day, the kids should ask Dad to lie down on his back on a large sheet o f brown craft paper But d o n ’t give him a clue what they are up to! (Use paper that com es on a roll o r piece sheets together to cover the length o f his body.) With m arkers or crayons, help the kids trace his o u tline.

W hen Dad isn ’t around, cut out and “dress” his life-size paper doll. Use d ifferent colored papers to cut out a bow tie, then decorate with polka do ts and glitter! C olor in som e shoes and glue on som e real shoelaces. G ive Dad a silly hat. belt and tie.

W hen finished, pul Dad’s cutout in a fun place to surprise him. How

about waving out the front window or sitting at the dining room table? Your kids will love having a little spoof on dad. And so will he.

* HAVE A DAD’S DAY AT THE Z O O — Take Dad out for his own day at the zoo. Let him choose which anim als to see and w here to stop for the picnic lunch the kids prepare beforehand. F or lighthearted fun, let Dad decide w hich anim al he most resem bles. The ferocious lion or the strong bear? Or, how about the nose on the an teater o r the belly on the hippo? Let him be the judge.

* FING ERPA INT A COTTON BASEBALL CA P — Present Dad with this special gift. Squirt fabric paints on a paper plate. Let the kids dip their thum bs in the paint (dip in different co lors each tim e) and make one-of-a-kind “do ts" all over a light- colored or white co tton baseball cap. Press Firmly for a c lear print. Let dry. For added p izzazz, decorate the cap with souvenir pins, team buttons, fly fishing lures w ith barbs cut off, etc.
