She has brought about key revolutionary changes in the field of Yoga by spreading Yoga education

Pearls of Wisdom
Heart to Heart With Smt. HansajiOur beloved Guru Smt. Hansaji completes 70 years this month. On the occasion
of this milestone, Shri Ajay Kalra interviews her. In this candid interview she
shares about her growing years, marriage, motherhood and vision for The Yoga
Institute.
As you turn 70 what thoughts
come to mind, when you reflect
on your life journey so far?
I have had a tremendous life with a variety
o f e x p e r i e n c e . I w o u l d n o t h a v e
experienced this had I married into a
normal rich family. I have learnt from every
situation, hence I see every life experience
as an effort to reach towards divinity. Most
of my life has been around educating
people to overcome their pain due to
ignorance.
What were you like as a child? Could you
share some interesting incident from
your childhood?
I was a happy child. If a situation was
gloomy I would sing, dance, play and make
the atmosphere happy. I studied in a
Gandhian school. As part of the school
activities we had to clean the school. I was
often given the task of cleaning the toilet
maybe because I was from an affluent
family. Initially this was shocking and
disgusting! But I soon realized that no
work is bad and every work is to be
respected. We would also sing the Gita and
Gandhi bhajans emphasizing all regions
are the same. This had a strong impact on
me.
What was your adolescence like?
I took up science and then law. Every day I
would also attend music class where I
learnt the sitar and classical singing. I
hardly saw any films and going to a hotel
was an absolute no. My father was a strict
disciplinarian. He would wake us all up at 4
am to study. When I was small I would flow
with his directions. When I grew up, this
strictness bothered me. This aggravated
my asthma more. As a result I started
watching my breath carefully. I would do a
variety of pranayama. This made me
understand the flow and depth of prana.
When did your association with The Yoga
Institute begin?
My father used to come to The Yoga
Institute from the time I was a child.
Around that time The Indian Film Institute
wanted to make a film on Yoga. They
wanted two families. So my family and the
Yogendra family came together to make
the first documentary film on Yoga. I was
two years old at that time. When I was 21, I
came to the Institute again with my father.
What attracted you to Dr. Jayadeva? How
did you decide to marry him?
When I started coming to the Institute, I
saw that Dr. Jayadeva had a unique
personality. He was very sincere, hardly
spoke, was busy all the time and not at all
bothered about how he looked. I would
wonder what kind of a person is this. I
noticed that Dr. Jayadeva would only look
at the men while teaching. I took this as a
challenge and decided that I must make
this person normal. As a result my
attention would often go towards him. At
the same time I respected him for his
profound knowledge, simplicity and hard
work. Around this time my father began
looking for boys to get me married. They
were mostly from rich families. Even
though I was from a rich family I was a
s i m p l e g i r l . I w a s a t h i n ke r w i t h a
philosophical bent of mind. I had a fearless
nature because of my complete faith in
God. One day I sat across Dr. Jayadeva and
told him “I want to marry you.” He
accepted.
What was your experience of being a
mother?
After Patanjali was born I soon realized
that Dr. Jayadeva and me represented two
different sides of yoga. He represented
yoga for the sanyasi and I represented
yoga for the householder. He did not use
the fan, ate simple food and had strict rules
and regulations. On the other hand I was
bubbly and cheerful. He was like Ram and I
was like Krishna. For the sake of our child
we had to come together and have a
common opinion on everything. So I
adapted to his way of life. I was clear
though, that a child should have holistic
growth. At our house the food was simple.
So every Sunday I would take him to my
parent’s home where he could eat what he
wanted. Neither of us ever forced him. We
came to his level to see he got proper
samskars.
How do you deal with tragic events?
I have faith in God. I accept tragic events as
his wish. My brother was detected with
cancer and he passed away within three
months. He was a scientist and such a soft
spoken person. This was the first shocking
event for me. My formula for dealing with
tragedy is to start giving attention to who
is living. I sing philosophical songs in my
mind and not think about past memory. I
always had people around me for and
because of the Institute, I kept busy.
You play many roles of daughter, mother,
wife, Yoga guru and counsellor. Is there
any role you find more fulfilling than
others?
All these roles are equally important.
What gives me immense satisfaction is
when I counsel somebody and there is
transformation in their life. When people
say you saved me, I say I have not done
anything; it is all through the power of God
and your own effort. My deepest desire is
to free people from their suffering through
knowledge.
What is Smt. Hansaji like with friends and
family?
Accepting and adjusting with every
situation. I see myself as a mother to the
whole world. I like to take care of my
children. That is how I feel internally. Right
from childhood, I do not like a negative
environment.
Share three formulas that help you to
keep a balanced state of mind all the
time?
First is a strong philosophical background.
I believe whatever happens, happens for
good. Change is always for good. Second is
to be selfless. If I hold on to my pain and
suffering that is not good. My pain bearing
capacity is very high. There are times when
I may be going through great physical
discomfort but others may not even know
about it. I believe whatever life brings, be it
deaths, accidents, separations or pain; I
must accept it gracefully and emit only joy
and positivity to the world. Third is to take
the support of Yoga through asana,
pranayama and daily routines. This keeps
the mind in control.
W h a t i s yo u r v i s i o n f o r T h e Yo g a
Institute?
The vision is to hold on to pure Yoga. All
variations of Yoga are being offered in the
world. Yoga is becoming physical training.
So we must now reach out to people and
share the right understanding of Yoga. Our
goal is not to make money or be famous. I
am glad that the new generation is
thinking in the same way.
05 SATTVA OCTOBER 2017 YOGA
ou are sipping your hot decaf green
Ytea, staring out of the window,
listening to the pitter patter of the
rain, as the buildings ahead of you are
drenched in sheets of drizzling rain.
Suddenly a slender thing drops in front of
you and is hanging.
“Snake!” a thought races across like a
Formula one car in your mind and you leap
out of your chair.
Tea flying in all directions, your foot hits
the cupboard next to you, and now you are
limping around and also some of the tea
has scalded you as it flew across the room.
You are cursing the floor above you and are
ready to descend the wrath of your
warrior generations on them.
After your Ekpadasana dance has stopped
and your heartbeat has moved from
jackhammer to small hammer like beat,
you look out and notice that the “snake” is
actually a rope, though a very wet one.
You can't believe your eyes, so you rub
them and inch closer to the window. It is
indeed a Rope, and now you can even see
the fibers on it.
You look around the room, the chair askew,
tea on the ground, the cup has vanished
o u t o f s i g h t . Yo u t h i n k “ w h a t j u s t
happened?”
Viparyaya or False Knowledge or Illusion
Sage Patanjali named Viparyaya as that
modification or cognition in our mind
which is based on false knowledge.
Why false? Because when you realized it
was a rope, the thought that it is snake has
vanished. Similarly, false knowledge is
demolished in the face of true knowledge
or Pramana.
But there is more to it.
When the rope dangled, the fear of death
w h i c h i s i n s t i l l e d i n u s , f r o m t i m e
immemorial , reared its head. Sage
Patanjali called it Abhinevasha or fear of
death which is a form of klesha. Kleshas
are those structural defects of the mind
which because they cause klesha or pain,
they are called kleshas.
With Abhinivesha racing in your system,
what followed is the vow of wrath being
brought down on the perpetrator. This
wrath is called Dvesha or Hatred and is
another form of Kleshas.
When Sage Patanjali was talking about
false knowledge, he was not just naming it,
but he also highlighted how Viparyaya
causes kleshas and in fact, is made up of
kleshas.
Hence, every Yoga technique is designed
to reduce Kleshas and demolish false
knowledge because the ultimate false
knowledge one needs to break is the false
union between Purusha and Prakriti.

07 SATTVA OCTOBER 2017YOGA
Before I begin, I wish to express my
heartfelt gratitude to The Yoga Institute,
Santacruz for giving me this opportunity
to share some bits of medical information
that I gathered during my medical
schooling. I cal l it ‘bits of medical
information’ because I believe that
‘knowledge’ is something that has to be
realized and it is not gained by merely
reading a book. However, I have to begin
somewhere; so, here I begin –
Reduced Sleep Duration and Quality – A
present-day lifestyle disorder
Reduced sleep duration and poor quality
of sleep is very common nowadays. What
is more alarming is that most people do not
consider it as something abnormal.
H o w eve r, i m p o r t a n t p hy s i o l o g i c a l
processes take place in the body during
sleep – the body’s ‘repair and restore’
processes, memory consolidation and
immune functions. Hence, it is important
to sleep adequately and sleep well.
Physiology of Sleep
S l e e p i s d e fi n e d a s a s t a t e o f
unconsciousness from which the person
can be awakened. There are multiple
stages of sleep, from very light sleep to
very deep sleep. In fact, there are two
distinct types of sleep – the non-rapid-eye
movement (NREM) sleep and the rapid-
eye movement (REM) sleep.
The sleep cycle begins with NREM sleep
which is divided into four stages. Stage 1
NREM sleep follows REM sleep and the
sleep cycle continues. NREM sleep
constitutes 75% of the total sleep time in a
young adult; REM occupies only 25% of
the total sleep time.
Detrimental Effects of Insufficient or
Excessive sleep
Insufficient or excessive sleep can be
harmful to health. Sustained sleep
d e p r i v a t i o n r e d u c e s r e s i s t a n c e t o
infection, causes a deep negative energy
b a l a n c e a n d a f f e c t s t h e m e m o r y
consolidation process. Long term sleep
deprivation increases the risk of diabetes,
obesity, high blood pressure and heart
disease. Lack of sleep affects mood – lack
of sleep for two days or more can produce
symptoms of psychosis.
Oversleeping is also associated with
diabetes and heart disease. Although,
o v e r s l e e p i n g i s n o t t h e c a u s e f o r
depression, it is observed that persons
with depression oversleep – excessive
s l e e p i s o n e o f t h e s y m p t o m s o f
depression.
So, how much sleep is adequate sleep?
Sleep duration and sleep patterns change
with age. Infants sleep most of the time
both during the day and at night. As the
child grows in age there is gradual
decrease and ultimately disappearance of
day-time sleep and consolidation of night-
time sleep. Adults require about 7-8 hours
of sleep per night every night. Sleep
d u r a t i o n d e c r e a s e s f u r t h e r w i t h
increasing age. Older adults obtain on
average 2 hours less sleep per night than
younger adults. Furthermore, the quality
of sleep declines with age – there is a major
reduction in the duration of slow wave
sleep and increased sleep fragmentation.
Sleep disorders and Sleep hygiene
Sleep disorders are common and include
difficulty in falling asleep and frequent
awakening. These can be overcome with
Good Sleep Hygiene practices, which
include a consistent routine for bed and
consistent bedtime, a quiet darkened and
warm bedroom, a consistent wake time,
daytime exercise, and avoidance of alcohol
and exercise before bedtime.
Relaxation asanas such as Shavasana,
M a k a r a s a n a a n d D h r a d a s a n a a r e
recommended for persons with sleep
disorders. Yogendra Pranayam IV has a
sedative effect on the nervous system and
relaxes the entire body.

Yoga Technique of the Month
‘The drama of the world continues. I let it
pass, be still and hold my own’!
T h i s i s o n e o f t h e m o s t p o w e r f u l
techniques developed by Shri Yogendraji
to inculcate a spirit of vairagya, ‘letting go’.
We traverse life holding onto all and
sundry, from our material possessions to
our thoughts, opinions, likes, dislikes,
grudges, regrets and our insatiable
desires.
This simple technique teaches us that life
goes by just as the sounds around us.
These sounds represent life, its events,
situations and people who come and go.
We u n d e r s t a n d t h a t t h ey p e r s i s t ,
acknowledge them and allow ourselves to
move on without regret, analysis and
judgement.
STARTING POSITION
1. Sit on a mat leaning against a wall with
feet apart and outstretched. Do not
slouch. Let the hips be close to the wall
so that the spine remains naturally
erect.
2. The hands rest on the thighs, the palms
and fingers are loose and facing
upwards.
STEPS
1. Close your eyes and passively observe
the passing sounds as they come and
fade away. Do not allow yourself to
dwell on any sound but let it go as it
fades away. Pick up on the next sound
in the surrounding atmosphere.
If there are no sounds then you can
focus on some light instrumental music
but no words as words tend to develop
emotions and reactions in the mind.
2. Do not get judgmental or be affected
by any sound in any way.
3. Sit in this manner for 5 to 15 minutes.
Nishpanda Bhava LIMITATIONS/CONTRAINDICATIONS
There are no limitations or
contraindications for this practice. It can
be done by all.
BENEFITS
1. This technique, when understood and
practiced in its true spirit elevates us
f r o m t h e m u n d a n e t o t h e
extraordinary.
2. It is excellent to develop ‘vairagya
bhava’.
3 . I t c r e a t e s a f e e l i n g o f ‘ b o d y
forgetfulness’ which helps the body to
heal faster.
4. It is recommended in every sickness of
body and mind and otherwise.

n thinking about the benevolent reality
Iwe have to consider two ideas. One is
t h a t o u r o w n i n d i v i d u a l e g o ,
knowledge, intelligence and more is not
itself quite adequate and sufficient. We
must constantly accept that there is
something more than US. We are not the
bosses in this world and the whole show
does not run according to our wishes.
There is something larger and bigger in
every aspect of our life; not just when we
go to a temple or church, but as we are
functioning, carrying on our work and ,as
things are happening to us, everywhere
we hold a very secondary position.
To give you an illustration: The chairman of
Air India once said, "Now the planes are so
sophisticated that we are sure that if the
pilot fell asleep in Frankfurt, Germany, the
plane would still arrive at Santacruz,
Bombay, without any trouble." So the
larger processes are in fact quite adequate
and strong and we unnecessarily worry
and carry on as if we were doing anything.
The Larger Process
The other point is that such a larger
process is meaningful and benevolent; it is
not wicked or malicious. Things are not
occurring to destroy us, though the
chances are there at any moment. You see,
there are enough factors around us, i.e. the
germs and bacteria right in the air that we
breathe and yet they are in check. There is
something that helps us in our growth. If
one really understands, one sees that the
human effort or human intelligence is very
insignificant. What do we really know?
Very little. And as a result of this, ignorance
we create egoistic thinking. A great
physicist has stated that any intelligent
individual realizes that the so-called
knowledge we have is very small.
There are a lot of unknown factors
operating in our life. And yet life goes on.
These factors are quite strong, they have
their own direction and they guide us. So
the unknown factors are many, and yet the
human mind feels as if it knew everything
and were very powerful. These false
feelings create a lot of disquiet. We are at
war with the outside world, while in reality
we are unable to do much and things are
going on in the right way. In Yoga, it is
suggested to check this disquiet through
techniques like conditioning where we are
trying to create a greater sense of
tranquility and introversion. When this is
c o n t i n u e d f o r a l o n g p e r i o d , i t
automatically leads to a certain faith and
understanding.
T h e s e p o s i t i v e t h o u g h t s a r i s e
automatically through techniques that
lead the individual within himself or he can
hold on to them for a longer duration. It is
in a confused condition that the quality of
faith cannot be developed.
This attitude has to be cultivated. It is not
easily available, as we are dominated by
egoistic thinking, anxieties and fear. So we
have to create this line of thinking and
learn to see in different situations how the
factors that have a final say are larger than
our own self.
So with constant care and attention there
is a lot of learning going on. One has to
cultivate faith. As faith is not something
inherent in us. It is considered as a
technique and to work at this technique
strengthens the faith.
The largeness of the world and the great
laws of life have to be constantly brought
to our attention. We have to create an
understanding of how the little things that
are occurring are not really little or
meaningless, as we might feel when they
are occurring. After four, five or ten years
we might see a design in them. If things had
not occurred as they have, we would not
be what we are.
The Gita says that one is as great as one's
faith is. If one has small aspirations, poor
belief, one is a dwarf. If one has great
aspirations, great faith, one is a great
individual. Doubts and anxieties weaken.
An individual who is always uncertain
cannot really start any activity seriously. A
certain working faith is necessary in any
action. In the old writings it is said that
faith is like a mother for the child. It
nourishes. If a student of Yoga does not
have any faith and is constantly agitated,
frightened or expecting the worst to
happen, then he cannot really settle down
to even his exercises and his improvement.
An agitated attitude is contrary to Yogic
studies. In a noisy London pub they had
once put up a notice: "Dear customer, if
you find that the whole world is turning
around you, then it is for you to sit down."
There is really nothing wrong with the
world outside. It follows its own laws. But if
you get agitated, you feel as if the world is
rotating. So the idea of faith is very
strongly founded in the Gita and tells us
that i f there is faith, there is real
understanding, which solves a lot of our
difficulties. On the contrary, when there is
lack of faith, there is a lot of confusion and
ignorance, which increases our difficulties.

Name: Usha Kamath
Age: 58 years old
Profession: Homemaker
Health Issue: Heart Blockage (30% heart
functionality and renowned cardiologist
suggested to undergo heart surgery by-
pass in 2011)
Q: How did you learn about The Yoga
Institute?
A: I heard about The Yoga Institute from
my husband who used to visit the place
regularly.
Q: State your present age, profession, and
ailment
A: Homemaker with two kids and heart
blockages and stress. Since 2001 major
responsibility was taking care of ailing
husband due to his health complications.
My ailment in 2011 ECG was done which
indicated that only 30 percent of my heart
was working due to blockages. I was
advised by the attending doctor and
renowned cardiologist to go in for heart
surgery. I was reluctant and determined to
set things right by modifying lifestyle, yoga
exercise and dietary changes.
Q: Family history of heart disease, please
share the particulars?
A: Elder brothers suffering from heart
blockage disorder. 2 Elder brothers have a
history of heart blockages and underwent
surgery. One at the age of 52 was
diagnosed with 100% blockage and the
other at the age of 48 was diagnosed with
70% blockage.
Q: How have you benefitted from special
yoga women regular class?
A : Yo g a t e a c h e r s w e r e c a r i n g a n d

regarding modifying the diet plan and
simplifying yoga asanas as per my
condition. I was regular and practised it
daily. Daily walk at my pace and food

Smt Hansaji’s practical tips came in very

the housework within my capacity
followed by proper rest. I take home
tuitions from small kids as well.
Till date, I attend the yoga class without
fail (Unless some major requirement at
home since my husband’s health is one of
the major concerns at the moment.) But, I
e n j oy t h e s e r e n i t y a n d p e a c e t h i s
wonderful institute has to offer.
Q: What does your latest report suggest?
A: To sum up ECG done in December 2016
indicated normal functioning of left
ventricle and without getting too technical
because I do not understand all the details,
but Doctors are impressed by my heart
function considering my age and other
factors from 30% functioning it’s up to
almost normal at 50% without any surgery.
(60% is the ideal number I have been
informed but considering my hereditary
factor progress is excellent doctors tell
me) Of course, medications prescribed
were taken regularly, but Yoga has been
my game changer for holistic health.

Yoga Celebrates Life
It was my good fortune to get associated
with The Yoga Institute. Dr. Jayadeva and
Smt. Hansaji exemplify householders’
Yoga way of living. Impressive positive
vibes and humility is palpable as soon as
yo u e n t e r t h e g a t e s o f a s t a l w a r t
institution that is almost a hundred years
old. The atmosphere is full of reverence
and humility without indulgence of tooting
the horn of Yoga knowledge or media
wisdom for display.
One is easily drawn in by the quality of
work done by the Institute in the field of
Yoga. Yoga teacher training, camps,
workshops, social service initiatives etc. all
varied programs for the better of society
under one roof. Life and health aspects are
thoroughly taken care off. Most of us
neglect our health on the pretext of
leading busy lives with no time to practice
yoga. But if the Prime Minister Shri
Narendra Modiji in spite of his busy
s c h e d u l e , c a n p r a c t i c e Yo g a a n d

can’t we?
Perhaps the basic life skills such as how to
live life well and how to manage our
emotions are not taught in our syllabus in
schools. This makes it all the important for
such veteran institutions who continue
the good mission of promoting yoga in a
scientific way and reviving the rich
tradition of classical Yoga, training,
development, inclusion of medical
sciences and Yoga for betterment of the
community.
Thousands of people visit The Yoga
Institute daily, with problems ranging from
minor to life threatening health issues,
weight loss, family discords, professional
tensions, depression, etc. All are helped
without discrimination.

“Lack of understanding makes life a burden rather than joy. ”
A Mystic Yogi –Shri Yogendraji
A Yogic life, both simple and sublime, defines Shri
Yogendraji. He was successful in understanding and
attaining the desired perfection and decoding the
purpose of his life. The chief joy of this Yogi's life was not
in the world around him, and hence he did not go
hankering after material things, but he realised that it is
in him a gift to be shared. He believed that what the Yogi
feels in the higher field of Samadhi – the stage of
absolute concentration lies hidden under the many-
coloured veils of obscurity.
Nature opened the book of Yoga knowledge to him, and
he learnt very quickly what a thousand books cannot
teach. His desires were few, sufficient for a simple life
which nature cared to supply. Above the struggle and
trifling of the world, he enjoyed eternal peace, bliss and
freedom. Wherever the great yogic went, he carried
happiness and purity with him. Such was a great Yogi, a
mystic who in very essence was nature’s divine gift for
all of the humanity. He was free spiritual being just like
the birds of the forests, joyous like the smiling dawn and
unselfish like the vast ocean. Founder, Shri Yogendraji
