NEWS from PARISH EDUCATION

Our Fall Fellowship Event was a SUCCESS! Thanks Holly Grove for sharing your delicious break-fast dishes. It was wonderful to see the youngsters interacting with adults of all ages. Pastor Matt led us in interactive singing and we all had a good laugh. So much fun! He also led us in a "did you know" lesson regarding seasons of the Church. We played a Faith Bingo where in order to win, our children were required to ask the adults for answers to questions regarding our church and faith.

We hope to have another cross-generational gathering of this nature in early 2018. Stay tuned for details on that event.

Moving on, Christmas will be here before we know it. We are working on the Children's Christmas Program. Make memories for your children by making sure they participate. Please let Lateffa or any member of the Parish Education Committee know if your child can be a part of this sweet tradition. Children of all ages are welcome!

We are always looking for ideas to advance the Christian Education of our children. If you have one, please let us know!

Comfortable with numbers? Care about your church and want to help? Consider if

God might be calling you to serve a term as the Holly Grove Lutheran Church Treas-

urer. Amy Kepley is two years into a 3-year term and we would like to have a re-

placement in place in advance for a smooth transition. Please speak to Pastor Matt

for more information.

2017 COUNCIL MEETING MINUTEES

Treasurer – Michael Willson moved to approve. Herbert Frank Seconded. Motion Passed.

Building Fund – Sandra Vaughn made one correction to the Building Fund June balance. Dean Chapman moved to ap-prove. Michael Wilson Seconded. Motion Passed.

Pastor’s Report – Lateffa began the process of working with Minnie to take over the entry of contributions into our rec-ord keeping software. Windows 10 no longer supports this software, therefore, we have not been able to record con-tributions for several weeks. We have two options: 1) a stand-alone product that comes at a fixed, one-time price upfront; or 2) a monthly subscription to a web (cloud) based program that is accessible anywhere, backs up automati-cally, is being constantly updated, and costs less up front, but probably more over the long run.

In Ministry matters, it’s been a busy month for hospital visits, but as far as I know today, no one is in the hospital, thanks be to God. Unfortunately, due to various schedule conflicts and one bum knee, only three youths were able to go on the Hanging Rock trip scheduled for last week. The three elected to go out to lunch instead of making the trip. As we look toward Houston and the Youth Gathering next summer, I have 8 youths selling tickets to the Men’s BBQ, and we plan to help on the day of as well. Michael Willson moved to approve. We talked about serving at the Crisis Ministries -in the next couple of months they have open 9/4, 9/30, and 10/13. Neil Clark made the motion to do a meal on 9/30 and purchase the chickens from DT Lions. We will purchase the other items. Neil agreed to chair this project. Dean Chapman moved to approve. Michael Willson Seconded. Motion Passed.

Committee Reports: Cemetery – Stones were put back in place on the wall with several members helping

Parish Education – Karen reported PE met on 8/6 – VBS went well – 8/27, we will have the Blessing of backpacks, teachers and students – 9/17 will be a Pot Luck Breakfast for everyone – we are still working on the Christmas Program for 12/22

Property – Dean and some others removed the old deck from the OC- Plans for a new roof on the shelter will be happening this fall, also Chip and his son plan to remove the old tree when cooler weather permits. Recreation – No Report

Committee Reports:

Scholarship – The committee recommends we invest $30,000 into the ELCA Endowment Fund Pooled Trust A and keep the remainder of the balance in the current FNB Money Market Account with checking for flexibility in disbursement of funds. Michael Willson moved to approve. Herbert Frank Seconded. Motion Passed. Disbursement amounts will be decided year-ly after the May financial statements are reviewed and considering both funds. One disbursement will be named each year for the Roy E and Carrie C Lohr Scholarship. There will be a fundraiser on Saturday, November 4 with dinner and dessert auction. We would like to add a silent auction of donated items to be received by 10/14. Items will be in the fellowship hall on display starting 10/15 each Sunday. Contact any member if you have a donation. Joe Davis would like step aside as chair and treasurer. He will gladly help and support whoever decides to accept the position. Scouts – No Report Stewardship – No Report Worship & Music – No Report Social Ministry – We will be feeding at Crisis Ministries on 9/30 Youth – Included in Pastor’s Report Old Business: Need new Treasurer hopefully by 2/2018

The safe will be moved to the OC.

We need to do something with the old ceiling camera. Neil Clark suggested that Chip sell it on EBay.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! We pulled off something big last month at Holly Grove. When the opportunity arose to help the people of Texas who were affected by hurricane Harvey, our congregation stepped up to lead the community in a big way! If you get the chance, please thank the people at Swing Transport in Salisbury for providing the trailer and transport to Texas. Thank the members of Mt. Tabor, UCC who let us borrow their road sign, provided sig-nificant funds for supplies, and who showed up in person to help us man the trailer! Thank your friends and neighbors for coming by to share some supplies with those in need! When it was all said and done, we collected and sent tons and tons (literally) of supplies. When the folks from Swing opened up the trailer and looked inside, they couldn't believe how much was in there! Swing took care of transport and provided a team of drivers- the truck left on a Wednesday and was unloaded and coming back home by Thursday. Their destination was College Station Texas, where Pastor Matt did his internship (and met Keri!) six years ago! The folks at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church there unloaded the big truck, and loaded most of the supplies into Uhauls they rented to get the materials the final leg into the Houston food bank. When they unloaded again at the food bank, they stacked all the supplies onto pallets, and the numbers were impressive: -47 pallets of bottled water -23 pallets of diapers and wipes -7 pallets of toilet paper and paper towels -6 pallets of bleach and cleaning supplies Pastor Patrick McLaughlin, Pastor of Our Saviour's Lutheran, College Station, TX said to send a huge thanks to the folks in Lexington, NC, and to let them know that the mission was accomplished! He added that “their outreach and compassion has made this two of the best days in my 30+ years of ministry. Not one complaint heard in the entire process. God's work - a lot of hands!” Even as we celebrate our wonderful effort, there are still tremendous needs out there in the wake of the hurricanes, particularly in Puerto Rico where there is still no running water and where there probably won't be power for months. One of the best ways to continue to help hurricane victims is to donate to Lutheran Disaster response, either by dropping a check designated that way in the church offering plate or giving online at the address be-low. The ELCA has been using the tag line “God's Work, Our Hands” for several years now, and it could not have been exemplified better by what happened here. Thank you, thank you, thank you! October October is the tenth month of the year and one of seven months with a length of 31 days. In common years, January starts the same day of the week as Octo-ber, but no other month starts on the same day in leap years. October is associated with Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. It happens to be my favorite time of year. I love the crisp Autumn air and the gorgeous colors. And October is the month my daughter was born, 25 years ago. Happy Birthday Amanda!! Those born in the first half of the month are under the Zodiac sign Libra and those born in the latter part of October are Scorpios. October's birthstones are pink tourmaline and opal. It's said that an opal will crack if not worn by someone born in October. The birth flower is the calendula. And for all of you sports lovers, here's a tid-bit for you: The last week in Octo-ber is the only time of the year when all four major North American Sports Leagues schedule games.

Reformation Sunday

You are invited to the All County service commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation on Sunday October 29th at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church

in Welcome. The Service begins at 7pm, and will feature singers from all the Lutheran churches in the county in a combined choir. Pastor Andrea Bates will preach, and Pastor Matt and other local pastors will help lead the service. In the spirit of Katie Luther's love for brewing, the folks of Our Saviour's are also organizing a meet up with Lutherans in the area for a cider at Bull City Ciderworks during Reformation week. Their invitation says "We'll meet on Thursday October 26th 7:00pm at Bull City Ciderworks in Lexington (599 S. Salisbury St). Trivia begins at 7:30 and we'd love to show our competitive spirit while sam-pling Bull City's ciders and beer. We'll have snacks available to share as well. Come join in the fun!"

September Senior News Minnie Conrad Holly Grove Senior Citizens met Wednesday, September 20th at Mt. Tabor’s Events Cen-ter. Carolina Conrad and Minnie Conrad were responsible for the program. The Grove Singers entertained the group with gospel songs and hymns. Pastor Darrell blessed the food and we enjoyed one of Daisy’s delicious meals.

Our next meeting will be on October 18th at 10:30 and all seniors in the community are

invited to join us.
