PSALM 23
God is my shepherd, I shall not want. God makes me lie down in green pastures,
Leads me beside still waters, and restores my soul. You lead me in right paths for the sake of Your name. Even when I walk in the valley of the shadow of death
I shall fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You have set a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Certainly goodness and mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell in the House of God forever.
Adonai is my shepherd; I have all that I need.Adonai lets me lie down in green meadows, leads me beside
peaceful waters, and renews my strength. You bring my wandering spirit back and guide me along
paths of justice and truth for the sake of Your name.Even when I walk in the valley of the shadow of death,
I will not be afraid, for You are with me.Your rod and Your staff comfort and protect me.
You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows
with blessings.Certainly, goodness and mercy will pursue me all the days
of my life, and I shall live in the House of God forever.

KAVANAH FOR YIZKOR “INTENTION FOR MEMORY”
Jewish tradition, in its wisdom, teaches us that between the world of
the living and the world of the dead there is a window and not a wall. Un-
fortunately, our modern culture has taught us that dead is dead and all rela-
tionship is severed. There exists now only a brick wall! Fortunately for us,
Jewish tradition understands that a greater spirit exists. Many congregants
have told me of graveside conversations with loved ones. Our tradition, by
means of Shiva, Kaddish, Yahrzeit, Yizkor, and Kever Avot, provides us with a
window through which we are witness to the world of the dead.
These ritual moments provide us with a sacred space and time wherein
we may open our hearts and minds to the possibility of a genuine intercon-
nection with beloved family members and friends who have left the world
of the living.
Some of us mourn the loss of a husband, a wife, a partner; the pillow
feels so empty in the dark.
Some of us mourn the death of a brother or sister. The memories are
among our earliest ones, and they remain with us forever. The memory of
their fire warms our thoughts about our youth.
Some mourn the passing of a child. This is the most hurtful pain of all.
Years unfulfilled, hopes unrealized: A painful mystery.
Though not listed by name in this Book of Remembrance, many recall
those pets that provided the comfort, solace and support only a cherished
animal companion can give.
This is the sacred space in time when we may view these departed
souls through the window of memory. We pray that God watches over
them all. We pray for healing from the wounds we feel from their absence
and hope that we live our lives honorably as a tribute to the gifts they gave
to us.
Zichronam liv’rachah, “May their memories be for a blessing.”
Rabbi Thomas A. Louchheim

MEDITATION
There are stars up above, So far away we only see their light
Long, long after the star itself is gone. And so it is with people that we loved
Their memories keep shining ever so brightly Though their time with us is done.
But the stars that light up the darkest night, These are the lights that guide us.
As we live our days, these are the ways we remember.
Hannah Szenesh
MEDITATION
When cherished ties are broken and fond hopes shattered, only faith and confidence can lighten the heaviness of the heart. The pang of separation is hard to bear, but to brood over our sorrow is to embitter our grief.
The Psalmist said that in his infliction he learned the law of God. Indeed, not unavailing will be our grief, if it sends us back to serve and bless the living. We learn how to counsel and comfort those who, like ourselves, are sorrow-stricken. Though absent, the departed still minister to our spirits, teaching us patience, faithful-ness and devotion. Within the circle of daily association, we often failed to discern their worth and their loveliness. In the remem-brance of their virtues and affections, the best and purest part of their nature lies eternally enshrined. Let us lift our head in hope, and summon our strength for duty. We dwell in the shelter of the Al-mighty, for God is our refuge and our fortress.
66
MEDITATION
God, Source of our strength and hope, You give us loved ones and make them the strength of our lives and the light of our eyes. This year, they departed.
We are bereft. Our hearts are torn. We feel alone at times. Yet, You are the Living Fountain from which our healing flows.
To You we look for comfort. Our love endures as their souls endure,
as You, O God, endure forever. Cause the soul of our beloved to find repose in the
wings of the Shechinah, among the souls of the holy and the pure. May their souls be bound up in the bond of life eternal.
May they rest in peace.
IN MEMORY OF THE SIX MILLION
When Rabbi Meir died, there were no more makers of parables. When Ben Zoma died, there were no more expounders. When Rabbi Joshua died, goodness departed from this world.
-Mishna Sota
When Kalman the shoemaker died, there were no more craftsmen. When Berl the musician died, artistry departed from the world. When Jonah the wagon driver went up in smoke, the roads washed away and troubles grew. When Avreml the orphan died, goodness departed from this world.

LOOK FOR ME IN RAINBOWS Time for me to go now, I won’t say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, way up in the sky. In the morning sunrise when all the world is new, Just look for me and love me, as you know I love you. Time for me to leave you, I won’t say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, high up in the sky. In the evening sunset, when all the world is through, Just look for me and love me, and I’ll be close to you. It won’t be forever, the day will come and then My loving arms will hold you, when we meet again. Time for us to part now, we won’t say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, shining in the sky, Every waking moment, and all your whole life through Just look for me and love me, as you know I love you. Just wish me to be near you, And I’ll be there with you.

SILENT DEVOTION
IN MEMORY OF A MOTHER I remember you in this hour, dear mother. I recall the days when you dwelt
on earth, and your tender love watched over me like a guardian angel. You
have gone from me, but the bond which unites our souls can never be sev-
ered; your image lives on within my heart and the impress of your love and
concern fills me with thoughts of tenderness and love. May God lift up the
divine light upon you and grant you eternal peace. Amen!
IN MEMORY OF A FATHER Your memory, dear father, fills my heart and soul at this hour. It revives in
me thoughts of the love, tenderness, and kindness you always bestowed
upon me. My thoughts of you continue to inspire me to live up to the best
that is within me, to a life of similar love and goodness. When my own
pilgrimage on earth is ended, may I be worthy of you and your love. May
your soul be embraced within God’s love, and may God grant you eternal
peace. Amen!
IN MEMORY OF A WIFE Your memory, dear companion of my life, now fills my heart and soul. I
remember all the happy days we lived together sharing life’s joys and sor-
rows. I remember your loving embrace, the tender affection that wedded
our hearts, the selflessness we knew while hand in hand we journeyed to-
gether through life, when your love and faithfulness were my comfort, and
your counsel and friendship were my support. I treasure you still within my
heart and pray only that I may be worthy of you and your love. Though
death has taken you from me, your image still lives within me and is a
source of inspiration to me. May God keep you and grant you peace eter-
nal. Amen!
3233
IN MEMORY OF A HUSBAND I remember you in this hour, dear companion of my life. I remember the
happy days we lived together sharing life’s joys and sorrows. I remember
your loving embrace, the tender affection that wedded our hearts, the self-
lessness we knew while hand in hand we journeyed together through life,
when your love and faithfulness were my comfort, and your counsel and
friendship were my support. Though death has taken you from me, your
image still lives on within every fiber of my being and continues to be an
inspiration to me. May God keep you and grant you peace eternal. Amen!
IN MEMORY OF A CHILD I remember you in this hour, my beloved child. I remember the days when
I watched you grow and develop. I remember the joy I felt in your every
breath, the love we knew together, and the hopes I had for your future.
Though death has taken you from me, you live on within my heart and
soul. You can never die. May the knowledge that you are in God’s pres-
ence now afford me a measure of comfort. May God continue to embrace
you with divine love and grant you eternal peace. Amen!
IN MEMORY OF A SISTER, BROTHER, OR FRIEND I remember you in this hour, my beloved (sister, brother, friend). I remem-
ber the days when we lived together as companions and your loving friend-
ship was my delight and support. Though death has taken you from me,
your image abides with me. When I think of you, gratitude for all our years
together fills my heart and I bless your memory for the friendship you once
showed me. May God bless you and keep you, and grant you eternal
peace. Amen!

THE BLESSING OF MEMORY
It is hard to sing of oneness when our world is not complete, when
those who once brought wholeness to our lives are gone, and naught
but memory can fill the emptiness can fill their parting leaves
behind.
But memory can tell us only what we were, in company with those
we loved; it cannot help us find what each of us, alone, must now
become. Yet no one is really alone; those who live no more, echo
still within our thoughts and words, and what they did is part of
what we have become.
We do our best homage to our dead when we live our lives most
fully, even in the shadow of our loss. For each of our lives is worth
the life of the whole world; in each one is the breath of the Ultimate
One. In affirming the One, we affirm the worth of each one whose
life, now ended, brought us closer to the Source of life, in whose
unity no one is alone and every life finds purpose.
Rabbi Richard N. Levy
