Having regard to:

All this considered, the following Call is issued by the Rector of the University of CataniaArt. 1 -Selection procedures

1. For the academic year 2o17/2o1B the University of Catania ofñcially declares the opening of the selectionprocedures for places in the following Ph.D. courses of cycle XXXIII":

With reference to the Ph.D. course in Physics, the admission to the course is subject to the veriñcation by theNational Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes of the maintenance of therequirements stated in Ministerial Decree 45/2013, necessary for the implementation of already accreditedPh.D. courses. In case this Ph.D. course is not accredited, the related selection procedures, if alreadycompleted, will be considered null and void in the respect of the “Guidelines for the accreditation of Ph.D.courses, academic year 217117/2o18, Cycle XXXIII".Detailed information on each Ph.D. course, together with the number of scholarships and their sources offunding, is included in the annerred information sheets which constitute integral and substantial part of the Call(anneites 1 to 18).

Art. 2 Admission requirements

Applications are open without regard to nationality or age to candidates who hold either a Laurea (VecchioOrdinamento) or a Laurea specialistica /magistrale or any foreign degree suitable for access to Ph.D. coursesby the deadline of the present call.The suitability of the foreign degree is assessed by the selection committee with respect to the rules in force inItaly and in the country where the degree was issued and according to international agreements on degreesrecognition.Applications are also open to candidates regularly enrolled in their nal year of Laurea Vecchio ordinamento,Laurea specialistica/magistrale or foreign degree course who obtain their final degree by no later than31/1o/2o17.In case these candidates pass the selection, their admission to the Ph.D. course is subject to the submissiou ofa self-certification of degree completion [for holders of Laurea Vecchio Ordinamento or LaureaSpeciaiistica/Magistrale) or a degree certìñcate (for holders of a degree issued by a foreign university) by nolater than o5/11/2017. Failure to submit the aforementioned documents within o5/11f2o1'_7 will lead to theci-:clusion from the doctoral program.With reference to the grant of the scholarships funded by the European Social Fund as in art.4, candidatesmust also meet the following additional requirements:

a. Being born or resident in Sicily;b. Being aged 35 or less at the moment of the completion of the application procedure.

Art. 3 - Application forrn

The application form is web based and must be completed electronically through the University of Cataniaonline application system available at http: portalestudente.unict.itLpor'tal;-gsjpdentefmap grvlet described atparagraph. 1o of the present article by no later than August 1111* 2017, h.14,oo (2,oo PM). (Italian time)

An application fee of C 5o,oo as contribution to costs for the organization of the selection is required. It mustbe paid according to the procedures described at paragraph. 1o, let. g) of the present article by no later thanAugust 11*1' 2o17, h.13,3o {1,3o PM). (Italian time)The application form can be completed either in Italian or in English and must contain the followinginformation:

a) name and surname, scal code, date and place of birth, address [including postal code), telephonenumber and e-mail;

b) nationality;c) name of the Ph.D. course for which the candidates intends to apply;d) name of his/her degree;e) disability with percentage of disability, if any;f) declaration of commitrnent to immediately communicate to dottora1:i@unict.it any change of

address, telephone number or e-mail;g) express indication of candidature for a place reserved to graduates from foreign universities (mr

Ph.D. prggrammes including thistype of places and forgraduates meeting this requireme1_1t__on_ly);h) declaration of acknowledgment of the content of the present call.

The following anne:-tes must be attached to application form:a) Curriculum uitae et srudiorum, duly dated and signed, containing the authoriaation to the treatment

of personal data (Italian Legislativa Decree n. 196/ 2oo3);b) One of the following documents concerning admission requirements:

- Se1f~certitication of successful completion of the degree course, for candidates with LaureaVecchio Ordinamento, Laurea specialistica or Laurea magistrale issued by an Italianuniversity; '

- Self-certification of enrolment in the final year of the degree course, including transcripts ofrecords, for candidates enrolled in the last year of Laurea Vecchio Drdinamento, LaureaSpecialistica and Laurea Magistrale at any Italian Universities, who will complete thecourse and obtain the degree by no later than 31/10/2017;

- Certificate stating the status of student in the nal year, including transcripts of records, forcandidates from foreign university who will complete the course and obtain the degree by nolater than 31/1o/2o16;

c) Research project;d) List ofpublications with relative abstracts, if any;e) Documents attesting English knowledge or further linguistic sldlls or computer skills, if any;f) Documents concerning the completion of further university courses;g) Declaration concerning the type of place for which the candidate intends to apply (according to the

form included in annert n.2o, integral to this call), for candidates who intend to apply for Ph.D.courses offering reserved places only;

h) Videoconference request form (according to the form included in anne:-r n.21, integral to this call) forcandidates living abroad and unable to reach Catania for the oral exam;

i) Copy of a valid Identity document;j) Copy of receipt of payment of € 5o,oo.

All annenes listed in par. 4 must be uploaded one by one onto the online application system in PDF format. Noother format than PDF is accepted. If the siae of the document is larger than that indicated by the system, thisdocument must be divided into two or more parts to be uploaded separately. All amieaes can be either inEnglish or in Italian. Any annert in a language other than English or Italian must be accompanied by a legaltranslation in English or in Italian, under penalty of inadmissibility to evaluation.Candidates who intend to apply for two or more different Ph.D. courses must complete two or more applicationforms separately and pay the application fee of € 5o,oo for each application.

Application forms will not be considered if either incomplete or submitted with different modalities and/orafter the deadline indicated in this article. Furthermore, application forms will not be considered if theapplication fee is paid after the deadline indicated in par. 2 of this article.Candidates are strongly advised to complete the application procedure well in advance of the espiration date ofthis call in order to avoid the clogging of the online system due to the volume of applications. The University isnot responsible whereas the candidate cannot complete the application procedure because of unforeseeablecircumstances, force majeure or any event not imputable to the university's administration.

Candidates are the sole responsible for the authenticity of the information included both in the applicationform and in the annertes. The university's administration is entitled to scrutiniae the application forms andrelated anne:-res according to the legislation in force and to esclude, in any moment and provided a propermotivation, those candidates whose applications do not comply with this call requirements.In order to complete the application procedure, each candidate must:

c) Enter his/her ñscal and PIN codes in the login bon in order to access to his/her personal account;d) Once in his/her account click “Prove di ammissione" and select the chosen Ph.D. course through

the drop-down menu;e) Enter personal data required and check their correctness;f) Con rm the data clicking the apposite confirmation command;g) Print the paying-in slip of the application fee generated by the online system after the

confirmation of the application;hl Pay the application fee in one of the following ways:

I at the counter of any bank of the UNICREDIT banking group after minimum threehours from the issuing of the paying~in slip;

I via credit card (VISA and MasterCard) from personal account (online payment).

Art. 4 - Type ofplaces

Each Ph.D. courses includes places with scholarship and places without scholarship. When scholarships areassociated to a speci c research theme, the title of the theme is reported on the information sheet of the relatedPh.D. course. After selected candidates are admitted to each doctoral program, the Ph.D. Academic boardidenti es the bene ciaries of the scholarships based on their study plans.

Scholarships can be funded by:1. the University of Catania;2. Italian partner universities;

_ Foreign partner universities;Public/private institutions, highly qualified from a scientific/cultural point of view and with suitablepersonnel, facilities and equipment;

5. European Social Fund - Operational Program for Sicily 2014-2020, Call 12/20 17;6. Possibly additional scholarships funded through the National Operational Program for Research and

Innovation 2014-2020 as in the Director Decree of the Ministry of Education, University and Research n.1377/2017.

Places reserved to graduates from foreign universities (both with scholarship and without scholarship) thatremain vacant can be made available for candidates to ordinary places, provided they are in the list of theselected candidates, with the eirception of the Ph.D. course in “Neuroscience” with reference to the scholarshipgranted by the University of Bordeaux as reserved to graduates from this University. In case this place remainsvacant, it will not be made available and the relative scholarship will not be assigned. In case this place isoccupied, the principles included in art. 9, points 1-4, of Ministerial Decree 45/2013 will not apply to thesescholarship, as required by point 5 of the same article; administrative and nancial management of thescholarships will be die entire responsibility of the funding institution.

With reference to scholarships funded by Italian partner universities (point 2, let. b) and/or by public/privateinstitutions (point 2, let. d), they are paid to the University of Catania in three instalments:

1. The rst instalment within thirty (30) days from the communication by the University of Catania ofthe name of the beneflciary of the scholarship;

2. Second and third instalments within thirty (30) days from the communication by the University ofCatania of the admission of the beneflciary to the academic years following the rst.

With reference to scholarships funded by European Social Fund - Operational Program for Sicily 2014-2020,Call 12/2017, instalments will be paid to the University of Catania by the Regional Department for Educationand Vocational Training for Sicily according to the following timetable and modalities:

a. an advance payment corresponding to 30% of the approved public funding at the beginning of theproject, after the signature of a specific agreement and the communication of the start of thescholarships;

b. a further 30% of the approved public funding, possibly reformulated on the base of the scholarshipseffectively assigned, following the implementation of the program for at least 50% of the advancepayment received, duly validated by the competent regional department;

c. a further 30% of the approved public funding, possibly reformulated on the base of the scholarshipseffectively assigned, following the implementation of the program for at least 100% of the advancedpayment and 50% of the second ìnstalment received, duly validated by the competent regionaldepartment;

d. the ñnal balance payment on conclusìon of the funded program, duly validated by the competentregional department.

6. With reference to scholarships funded through the National Operational Program for Research and Innovation

äfw,2014-2020 instalments will be paid according to the following modalities:

a. an advance third of the total amount after the submission of the documents concerning thebene ciaries of the scholarships;

b. a further third of the total amount after the submission of the first complete annual account;c. a final third of the total amount after the submission of the second complete annual account.

Cin conclusìon of the 35 months and after the submission of the third annual account, the Ministry ofEducation, University and Research will check the account and recalculate the amount actually due to theUniversity proceeding to:

a. possible confirmation of contributions already transferred;b. recovery of amounts transferred in ertcess;c. revocation of the contribution concerning the third year in case of negative assessment by the

academic board.

Art. 5 - Selection procedures

According to each Ph.D. information sheet (see art. 1), candidates' selection can be based on one of thefollowing procedures:

- Evaluation of qualifications;- Evaluation of quali cations, written and oral ei-raminations;- Evaluation of quali cations and oral ei-ramination.

As for the evaluation of quali cations, the following documents will be assessed:Curriculum vitae et studiorum;English language certi cates, if any;Publications, if any;Research project.

In case of Ph.D. courses whose selection procedure is exclusively based on the evaluation of quali cations,pass mark is 80/120 according to the following criteria:

Curriculum uitae et studiorum 30% of 120 points- man 36 points;English language certificates, if any 10% of 120 points - max 12 points;Publications, if any 10% of 120 points - mar. 12 points;Research project 50% of 120 points - mazt 60 points.

In case of Ph.D. courses whose selection procedure is based on the evaluation of quali cations, written andoral examinations, pass marlt is an aggregate 80/120.Candidates are admitted to the written eitamination if they obtain minimum 40/60 in the evaluation ofqualifications according to the following criteria:

Curriculum uitae et studiorum 30% of 60 points - max 18 points;English language certifìcates, if any 10% of 60 points - mai-.: 6 points;Publications, if any 10% of 60 points - mar. 6 points;Research project 50% of oo points - matt 30 points.

Candidates are admitted to the oral er-ramination if the obtain minimum 20/30 in the written examination;Candidates pass the oral eitamination if they obtain minimum 20/30.In case of Ph.D. courses whose selection procedure is based on the evaluation of quali cations and oraleaamination, pass mark is an aggregate 80/120.Candidates are admitted to the oral er-rarnination if they obtain minimum 40/60 in the evaluation ofqualiñcations according to the following criteria:

Curriculum oitae et studiorum 30% of 50 points - mau 18 points;English language certì cates, if any 10% of 60 points - mas 6 points;Publications, if any 10% of 60 points - ma:-r 5 points;Research project 50% of 60 points - mas: 30 points

Candidates pass the oral ertamination if they obtain minimum 40/60.

The research project assessed by the selection committee in the phase of evaluation of quali cations andprovisionally discussed in the oral esamination is not binding to the research subject effectively assigned tocandidates admitted to any doctoral program;In case the selection procedure e:-tclusively consists in the evaluation of quali cations, the selectioncommittee will post the results of the selection on the website of the department offering the Ph.D. course Incase the selection procedure includes a vuitton esamination, the selection committee will post the results ofthe evaluation of quali cations on the website of the Department offering Ph.D. course at least three (3) daysprior to the written erramination.

In case the selection procedure also includes the oral examination, the selection committee will post theresults of the evaluation of qualifications on the website of the Department offering Ph.D. course at leastfhftì'-E (33 days prior to the oral examiuation.In case the selection procedure consists in the evaluation of quali cation and oral examination, the selectioncommittee will post the results of the evaluation of qualifications on the website of the Department offeringPh.D. course at least three (3) days prior to the oral examination.Each Ph.D. selection committee is the sole responsible for the prompt publication of the results of theselection procedure.

Written and oral examinations, where included, will be held in the dates, hours and places indicated eachPh.D. course information sheets annexed to this call. No written notice will be sent to candidates.Any variation of date, hour or place will be notiñed well in advance on www.unict.it (section "Bandi, gare econoorsi">"Studenti e post laurea":›"Dottoraii di ricerca”).Candidates admitted to written and oral examinations must bring with them an identity document.Where expressly stated in the relative Ph.D. information sheet, candidates living abroad who are unable toreach Catania can take the sole oral examination in the form of video conference interview, provided it is heldat either a higher education institution or consulate/diplomatic mission.The candidate is full and sole responsible for the correct indication of the video conference address to be usedby the selection committee for the oral interview. The candidate must be available in the date of the oralinterview in the date indicated in the related Ph.D. information sheet. The selection committee is entitled toarrange with the candidate the exact time of the oral interview. Before the oral interview, the candidate isrequired to exhibit his/her identity document.Non-indication or incorrect indication of video conference address, non-connection - whatever the cause -with either the higher education institution or the consulate/diplomatic mission, unavailability of thecandidate on the day and hour established by the selection committee and non-exhibition of the identitydocument represent causes of exclusion from the selection procedure.The University of Catania decline all responsibility for any unprcdicted technical problem impeding the oralexam in the form of video conference interview.

Art. 6 - Designation and tasks of the Selection Committee

Each Selection Committee is composed according to art. 13 of the current Regulation of the University ofCatania concerning Ph.D. courses.Prior to the evaluation of quali cations, selection committees must establish the criteria of assignation ofpoints to each document to be assessed (curriculum uitae et studiorurn, English language certiñcates,publications and research project). In case of candidates who do not already hold the degree required toaccess a Ph.D. course, the selection committee must take into account the average grade related to examspassed by the candidate at the moment of the application in order to assess his/her academic careerproperly. The selection committees can take into account any further quali cations or certifications issued byacademic institutions.Prior to written examinations or oral examinations, when included, selection committees must establish thecriteria of development and evaluation of these exams and give appropriate information to candidates.

Upon completion of the selection procedure, each selection committee draws up the list of successfulcandidates, ranked in descending order of score. Scores being equal, the younger candidate prevails (law16.6.1998, n. 191). The list is signed by both the President and the Secretary of the Selection committee and isaffixed to the Notice board of the University's Department where the selection takes place and posted on thesame Departments website.In case of places reserved to graduates from foreign universities, the selection committee draws a separatelist of successful candidates ranked in descending order of score. Scores being equal, the younger candidateprevails (law 16.6.1998, n. 191). The list is signed by both the President and the Secretary of the Selectioncommittee and is af xed to the Notice board of the University's Department where the selection takes placeand posted on the same Department's website.Any reserved place remained vacant after the selection procedure can be made available for candidates in thelist concerning ordinary places (see art.4, par.3).

Art. 7 - Approval of the acts of the selection

1. The acts of the selection and the list of successful candidates eligible for Ph.D. places are ofñcially issuedthrough a dccree of the Rector of the University of Catania. The Rector's Decrees will be posted on

(section “Bondi gore e concorsi":=›”Studerm' e post loureo”>"Dottoroti di ricerco").Art. 8 - Admission to Ph.D. courses

1. Candidates are admitted to Ph.D. programs according to the descending order on the list of selectedcandidates until all the places available within each course are allocated. Successful candidates eligible for aplace in two or more Ph.D. course are requested to choose the Ph.D. course in which they wish to enroll.

2. Candidates are excluded if they do not comply with enrolment procedures (see art. 9) within the deadlineindicated in a following notification. This be the case, the next candidate in the list in descending order ofscore becomes eligible to fill the vacant place.

3. As a general rule, it is possible to allocate any places remained vacant due to renunciation of candidatespreceding on the list within three months from the beginning of course activities. This term of three monthscan be extended in case of availability of scholarships - even after the beginning of course activities - withinthe framework of communitarian, ministerial or regional programs expressly concerning Ph.D. courses ofCycle XIHÉXIII (academic year 2o1';f/2018). Incoming candidates, either for places with scholarships or placeswithout scholarships, will be informed by email on enrolment procedures and deadline. Failure to complywith enrolment procedures will lead to the exclusion from the course.

4. Top candidates on the list are admitted to a place with scholarship to the ei-rtent of the number of availablescholarships. On completion of the allocation of places with scholarships, incoming candidates on the list indescending order of score are admitted to a place without scholarship to the extent of the number ofavailable places without scholarship.

5. Candidates admitted to Ph.D. courses are required to pay enrolment fees for an amount established by theBoard of Trustees of the University of Catania as stated in the following article 9.

6. Candidates who have attended a Ph.D. course in a place with scholarship can only be enrolled as Ph.D.student in places without scholarship.

y. Candidates with disability corresponding to 56% are admitted to the programme in supernumerary placeswithout scholarship, even if their position on the list is below the corresponding number of places in thePh.D. program. Supernumeraty places without scholarship reserved to candidates with disability can be upto half of the ordinary places. Candidates with disabilities are esiempted from the payment of enrolment fees(Regulation of the University of Catania on Ph.D. Courses, art. 12, pt. 7).

Art. 9 - Enrolment procedures

1. Candidates admitted to Ph.D. courses are of cially appointed in a dccree of the Rector available at theuniversity's website www.unict.it (section "Bondi, gore e concorsi":-"Snidenti e post lour-eo”>”Dottoroti diricen-:c") from October 16 sor; to October 24 ao17.

a. Admitted candidates must submit the enrolment form and pay the enrolment fee (see following par. 4, lett. e)according to the procedure described in par. 3 and 4 by no later than the deadline indicated in thecommunication posted along with the Rectorls Decree. This communication represents the only official form ofinformation. No personal notice is sent to candidates.

3. The enrolment application must include the following information:a) Name and surname, scal code, date and place of birth, address [including postal code), telephone

number and e-mail;bl Disability with indication of percentage, if any;cl Declaration of commitrnent to attend the Ph.D. course full time according to the modalities fnced by

the academic board.

4. The enrolment form is web based. To complete the enrolment form candidates must:al Go to http: L/_porta1estudente.unict.it portalestudentel;bl Enter their fiscal code and PIN code, already used during the application procedure, in the specific

place.f) Pay the enrolment fee in one of the following ways:

I at any counter of a bank of the UNICREDIT banking group at least after three hours from theemission of the payìng-in slip;

I via credit card (VISA, MasterCard and Maestro] from personal account [online payment).

Enrolment forms submitted with modalities other than those indicated in the present article or after thedeadline in the aforementioned notice (see pt.2) will not be considered. Enrolment forms without theenrolment fee paid in the modalities and by the deadline indicated in the present article will not be consideredeither. The University of Catania decline all responsibility for failure to complete the enrolment procedure dueto either facts not imputable to its administration or fortuitous event or force majeure.

Candidates' failure to comply with the aforementioned provisions is considered equivalent to formalrenunciatìon to the place in the Ph.D. course. Vacant places will be made available for incoming candidates onthe list in descending order of score to the ezrtent of the number of available places in the program. These lat-tercandidates will be informed on enrolment procedures and deadline through an email sent to the email addressindicated in the application form. Candidates who benefit from scholarships ñnanced through communitarian, national, regional programs mustalso submit further documents as required in the related calls. These candidates will be informed on thismatter through an email sent to the email address indicated in the application form.

Art. Io - Scholarship

Candidates entitled to a scholarship are granted are remunerated according to the law in force.

Each scholarship amounts to C 13.6384? per year, before taaes charged on the scholarship holder. Thisamount is adjusted according to increases established by the law. The amomit of the scholarship is increasedup to 5o% in correspondence and proportìonally to study periods at foreign universities or research centres formaximum 18 months of the entire duration of the Ph.D. course.

The duration of each scholarship corresponds to the duration of the Ph.D. course (36 months). They areassigned to candidates according to their position on the list of candidates admitted to the Ph.D. course . Thegrant of the scholarship is confirmed if the candidate is admitted to the year following the rst.

At the end of each year doctoral students submit a detailed record of their research activity to the academicboard. The academic board assesses each doctoral student research work and admits him/her to the followingyear or espel him/her from the course.

By no later than November 15 of each year Ph.D. students must enroli in the following year. The enrolment issubject to the decision of the academic board according to art. 15, par. 4 of the Regulation of the university ofCatania for Ph.D. courses. Failure to renew the enrolment leads to the erclusion from the Ph.D. course.

6. The payment of the scholarship is conditioned to the effective attendance to course activities. Any remains willbe deposited to be used in subsequent cycles of Ph.D. course.

7. The payment of the scholarship consists in a two-month instalment for November and December and inmonthly instalments for the remaining months. Payments are deferred to the months following the month ofreference.

8. The provisions concerning tan benefit included in art. 4, Law 476/1984 apply to doctoral scholarships.

9. Scholarships cannot be combined with other nancial contributions unless these latter are granted by nationalor international institutions and destined to research work abroad.

1o. Candidates who have already bene ted from a doctoral scholarship or even portion of it cannot be granted ascholarship for a second time.

Art. 11 - Rights and duties of Ph.D. Students

1. With reference to rights and duties of Ph.D. students, candidates are required to refer to chapter V of theRegulation of the University of Catania for Ph.D. courses.

Art. 12 -Personal data

1. According to law 196/2003 and the regulation on treatment of personal data of the University of Catania, eachcandidate's personal data are treated with esclusive reference to the management of their career as Ph.D.student and to all procedures connected to this call.

Art. 13 - Clfficials in charge ofprocedure1. According to art.5, subparagraph 1, of Law 241/po, the official in charge of the procedure is:

- the chairperson of the selection committee with reference to the selection procedure, from theappointment of the committee members to the publication of the selection results;

- Mr Paolo Moscato (Ph.D. Students Cfñce), with reference to the procedures connected to the presentcall;

- Mr Salvatore Libertini (Ph.D. Students Office), with reference to the procedures concerning foreigncandidates.

Art. 14 - Final rneasures

1. The administration considers the possibility of modifications, updates or integrations to the present call- to bee:-rclusively advertised through www.unict.it (section "Bondi, gore e concorsi" :-› "Studenti e Post lauren” :--“Dottoruii di ricerco”) in case the number of places with scholarships, and consequently the number of placeswithout scholarships, increases due to further funds made available after the issuing of this call provided therespect of the terms of assignation of places to candidates on the pass list.

2. Any aspect(s) related to Ph.D. course and not eapressly covered in the present call is governed by MinisterialDecree 45/2 o13, International cooperation agreements and other legislatìon in force concerning Ph.D. course.
