2010 Jake graduated from Los Alamos HS and began college at New Mexico Tech in festive Socorro NM. He’s studying computer science and is somehow enjoying himself, despite a single (nasty) cafeteria and no other food/store within 2 miles of campus. Monica is a sophomore and is still able to juggle band (trombone), choir and theatre – in 2010 she had roles in The Wiz and Enemy of the People, she was in All-State Choir, and went to Blue Lake in MI. Donald, in addition to chess (won the NM K-6 championship as a 4 th grader), plays in 3 bands/orchestras (trombone, bassoon violin), is on a swim team, gives chess lessons, and spends his spare time studying math/science. Henry plays basketball and has also become a chess star: 2 nd highest rated in the state only to Donald in grades K-7 (~300 active players); the highlight of his year was beating Donald in an official tournament game. In the spring Henry won the NM K-3 Championship as a 2 nd grader, and he too cracked the Top 100 national list. Barb spent another fun year working at the Aspen (D/H’s school) office. Unfortunately for Dave, Obama’s 'plans' for NASA cancelled the mission that would have used the reactor he’s designed. Fortunately for Dave, the chess program he has developed has thrived. Aspen Chess Club has 70 members and quantity has bred quality; after winning championships in NM and AZ, the team (led by Donald and Henry) won six Top-10 trophies in National Championship sections in Atlanta and then Orlando – more than any other public school outside of NYC. When Barb was away, Dave caved to his mid-life crisis and bought a used 15- passenger van. Shortly after the trip to Dallas for the purchase, the van was put to use for a student trip to Zion/Bryce, a family (+6 Monica friends) trip to Schlitterbahn and Sea World San Antonio, students (+D/H) for work trip to Idaho Falls and then Yellowstone/Tetons, where Donald easily finished the 20 mile RT, 4000 ft vertical hike to Hurricane Pass. In July, we all travelled to South Haven MI for Dave’s Mom Lois’ 80 th Bday celebration. At Easter, Dave’s Dad Irv got a little too aggressive with the timpani and suffered a heart attack; fortuitously timed as fellow choir members called 911 and he was at the hospital in 10 minutes. In November, Barb, her Dad Don, and brothers Steve/Bruce toured the childhood homes of Don in Indiana and the 4 churches where Barb’s Grandfather was a Methodist Minister. Chess tourneys also provided vacations. During the Atlanta trip we drove the chess team through Huntsville AL to go fishing and visit the Air and Space Museum, and the Orlando tournament was at Disney World; other chess road trips included Vegas, Phoenix, Denver and camps in Chicago and Kansas. Finally, various family members saw lots of great shows in 2010: The Wall (Roger Waters), Rush, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Iron Maiden, Cirque de Soliel KA and Love (Beatles), Popovich Puppy/Kitty Extravaganza, and Monica went to NYC with Don/Steve (and HS seniors from Ironwood MI) and saw Billy Elliot, A Little Night Music, Fela, and Lend Me a Tenor.
