    Task 3:Installation of Windows XP

    Following steps to install Windows XP:

    Step 1: Power on the computer then press the delete key. After pressing delete key, it moves intoBIOS. In that BIOS we have to set group boot device priority .Give 1 st priority to CD-ROM drive,2nd priority Hard Disk and 3 rd priority to Floppy disc. Then press F10 (F10 means-save & exit)

    Step 2: Insert XP CD into CD drive and looking for message booting from CD Press any key to boot from CD , Then press Enter key.

    Step 3: Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration.Step 4: You will then get a Windows XP Professional Setup screen. You have the option to do anew Windows install, Repair previous install or quit. Since we are doing a new install we just pressEnter to continue.

    Step 5: Windows License agreement message will be displayed then you have to read .if you agree press F8 to Continue.. if you not agree press ESC key .

    Step 6: This step is very important. Here we will create the partition where Windows will beinstalled. If you have a brand new unformatted drive you will get a screen similar to below.

    Step 7: Now you use the up & down arrow keys to select the partition you want to install into, then press Enter to continue. You can use the same partition as used by the previous o.s. If you want tocreate partition press c, to Delete partition press D & L.

    Step 8: Now you will see both partition listed. Partition 1 (C: Drive) 6000MB and Partition 2 (E:Drive) 2180MB. You will also have 8MB of un partitioned space. Select Partition 1 (C: Drive) and

    press Enter.

    Step 9: Choose format the partition using NTFS file system. This is the recommended file system.If the hard drive has been formatted before then you can choose quick NTFS format. We chose

    NTFS because it offers many security features, supports larger drive size, and bigger size files.

    Step 10: Windows will now start formatting drive C

    Step 11: start copying setup files as shown on the image below :

    Step 12: After the setup has completed copying the files the computer will restart. Remove the XPCD in the drive but this time DO NOT press any key when the message "Press any key to boot fromCD" is displayed. In few seconds setup will continue

    Step 13: Windows XP Setup wizard will guide you through the setup process of gatheringinformation about your computer.

    Step 14: Choose your region and language.

    Step 15: Type in your name and organization

    Step 16: Enter your product key . The product key will be available on the window-XP softwareCD of length 25 digits, after enter this product key then press Next.

    Step 17: Name the computer, and enter an Administrator password. Don't forget to write down your Administrator password.

    Step 18: Enter the correct date, time and choose your time zone and then press nextStep 19: For the network setting choose typical and press next.

    Step 20: Choose work group or domain name. If you are not a member of a domain then leave thedefault settings and press next. Windows will restart again and adjust the display.

    Step 21: Windows installation process will be finalized Now it is time to restart the windows-XP

    again.Step 22: Windows will now adjust your resolution. Click ok to continue.

    Step 23: Finally Windows will start and Windows welcomes screen is displayed on the screen.Click next to continue.

    Step 24: Log in, to your PC for the first time.

    Task 4: Step-by-step install of Ubuntu 10.10

    Step 1: Insert UBUNTU CD in your CD/DVD-ROM device and reboot the computer in order to boot from the CD. Hit the F8, F11 or F12 key (depending on your BIOS) to select the CD/DVD-ROM as the boot device.

    Wait for the CD to load.

    Step 2: In a couple of minutes you will see the wallpaper and the installation wizard. Selectyour language and click the "Install Ubuntu" button to continue.

    Step 3: Preparing to install Ubuntu

    Make sure you have all the listed requirements.

    Step 4: Allocate drive space

    At this screen you have three options:

    1. Install alongside other operating systems

    - Choose this option ONLY if you have another OS (e.g. Windows XP) and you want a dual boot system.

    2. Erase and use the entire disk

    - Choose this option if you want to delete your existing operating system, or the hard drive isalready empty and you want to let the installer automatically partition the hard drive for you.This is the option recommended for all users, especially those who want a machine with asingle operating system on it.

    3. Specify partitions manually (advanced)

    - This option is recommended ONLY for advanced users, to create special partitions or formatthe hard drive with other file systems than the default one. But it can also be used to create a/home partition, which is very useful in case you reinstall the whole system.

    Step 5: This is how your partition table should look like.

    Step 6: Click the "Install Now" button to continue with the installation.

    Step 7: Where are you?

    This screen will feature a map of the Earth. Upon the selection of your current location, thetime for the final system will adjust accordingly. You can try to guess you exact location withthe mouse on the map, or just type the town in the designated field. Click the "Forward" buttonafter you have selected your desired location.

    Step 8: Keyboard layout

    On this screen, you will be able to choose a desired keyboard layout. But the default automaticselection should work for most of you. You can also click the "Figure Out Keyboard Layout"

    button for better recognition of your keyboard's layout. Click the "Forward" button when youhave finished with the keyboard configuration.

    Step 9: Who are you?

    On this screen, you must do exactly what the title says. Fill in the fields with your realname, the name of the computer , the name you want to use to log in on your Ubuntu OS (alsoknown as the "username," which will be required to log in to the system), and the password.

    Also at this step, there's an option called "Log in automatically." If you check it, you willautomatically be logged in to the Ubuntu desktop.

    Other option, called Required my password to login, then Click the "Forward" button tocontinue.

    Step 10: At this point the Ubuntu 10.10 Operating system will be installed.

    Step 11: After approximately 10 to 15 minutes (depending on your computer's specs), a pop-up window will appear, notifying you that the installation is complete, and you'll need to restartthe computer in order to use the newly installed Ubuntu operating system. Click the "Restart

    Now" button.

    Step 12: The CD will be ejected; remove it and press the "Enter" key to reboot. The computer will be restarted and, in a few seconds, you will see the Ubuntu boot splash.

    Step 13: At the login screen, click on your username and input your password. Click the "LogIn" button or hit Enter to log in...
