The new curriculum has been implemented, and the transition process has been managed smoothly. Our core activities such as training, assessments, hospital accreditation, and CPD continue to run very well. We had a successful Workforce Summit. The College Journal continues to increase its impact. A number of our Fellows are recognised on the National Honours List. All of these bode well for the College. None of this would be possible without your efforts. I would like to thank you all for your continued support, ideas and contributions. 2015 promises to be a big year. We have the AMC mid‐term re‐inspection of the College, ramping up of the new Curriculum, and workshops planned in conjunction with the Board meetings for developing long term strategies. The College recognises the outstanding contribution of all of our Fellows involved in teaching and mentoring our Trainees, the Supervisors of Training who spend considerable time and effort in supporting and assisting Trainees and members of the Court of Examiners who administer the College exams, the Formal Project Panel and all members of our Regional and National Committees. To our College staff, I would like to personally thank you for your dedication, skill and commitment. Once again, I wish you all a safe and a festive Christmas Season. The College will be closed over the Christmas period from Thursday 25th Decemberto Thursday 1st January, operating as usual from 9am Friday 2nd January.

TRAINEE NUMBERSOver the last six years, the College has registered around 200 new trainees eachyear, many of whom did not complete the training program. In 2014 the Collegeintroduced a new trainee selection policy (from 1st January). The new policy requiresprospective trainees to have already completed six months working in a CICMaccredited training unit, and to submit structured references from two Fellows of theCollege (full details of the trainee selection policy are available on the Collegewebsite).

The aim of the selection process is to recruit the best available trainees for thetraining program, who possess the essential values, attitudes and aptitude necessaryto develop into proficient intensive care specialists. Although the announcement ofthe new policy late in 2013 stimulated an influx of new trainees towards the end ofthe year, 2014 has seen a dramatic decrease in trainee registrations, with only 53being accepted into the training program. It is anticipated that next year will seethis number increase to some degree, but still well below the number seen inprevious years.

FIRST PART EXEMPTIONA reminder for Trainees registered from 1 January 2014 onwards

In order to qualify for an exemption from the CICM First Part examination, traineeswill require successful completion of Fellowship with ANZCA, ACEM or RACP.

Trainees undertaking a training program with another College and who havecompleted the Primary component of that program may be granted conditional entryinto CICM Core Training (ie exemption from the First Part exam). Howeverconditional Core Training will only be ratified on completion of the other College’straining program including award of Fellowship.
