Jewish tradition teaches that between the living and the dead thereis a window, not a wall. The culture of scientific materialismteaches that after death, the links between us and our loved oneswho died are forever ended - a brick wall! But, like the rituals ofShiva, Kaddish, and Yahrzeit, Yizkor opens windows to loved oneswho are no longer with us. Yizkor creates a sacred space and time,wherein we can open our hearts and minds to the possibility of agenuine interconnection with beloved family members and friendswho have left behind the world of the living. Yizkor is a window.Within the wellsprings of our infinite souls we find the window ofconnection between the living and the dead. Prepare to open thatwindow....

As you recite Yizkor prayers, let your senses and imagination serveas the vehicle of interconnection. For whom are you saying Yizkortoday? Can you imagine their faces before your eyes? See theirsmiles; visualize how they might be standing if they were next toyou. Do you recall the sound of their voices? Hear their words asyou stand in prayer. Feel their presence right in this moment. Inyour mind, in your heart, allow a presence right in this moment. Inyour mind, in your heart, allow a conversation between you tounfold. What needs to be communicated this year? What’s themessage you need to hear today? What are the silent prayers of theheart? What remains unspoken? Speak. Listen. Take your time.There is no reason to hurry. This is a timeless moment. Let all theradiance of their love be with you right now.

Those That Sleep In The Dust Shall Not Be Lost

Think for a moment of the lost lives of the ChamplainTowers in Surfside, Florida. This is my home community.The building, on the 88th block of Collins Avenue was only34 blocks north from my apartment, where I grew up inthe 1960s. While I cannot remember the building inparticular, as it was an undifferentiated condo in aconcrete canyon of apartments, it has come to be asymbol of the fragility of life.

Hundreds of people went to bed, on June 24th, not towake up and be lost amidst the rubble of that ill-fatedbuilding. When we say, from our machzor, “who shall liveand who shall die,” we only have to think of theChamplain Towers to visualize this fearful and awfulnotion of our mortality.

So how do we deal with this tragic loss? How do we dealwith any loss? So many have said that they prefer to betaken quickly so that there is no suffering. No one wantsa prolonged demise. But the converse is also true. Thosewho died so suddenly in June amidst a rumble and then acollapsing boom had no moment to reach out, no time tosay good bye and in this case, no body to bury.

If we were able to say goodbye, even to a loved one whoslowly died, we were given a gift that the families ofChamplain Tower were denied. Even in our own real andpowerful pain and loss, we can be grateful.

In the final episode of my favorite Netflix show, Shtissel,Shulem is sitting with Akiva and Nuchem. He quotes thegreat Yiddish author, Isaac Bashevis Singer:

The dead don’t go anywhere. They are all here.Each man is a cemetery. An actual cemetery, inwhich lie all our grandmothers and grandfathers,the father and mother, the wife and the child.Everyone is here all the time.

Then the dead and the living join Shtissel at the table,eating festively and laughing.

How brief is life. How fleeting our days. As the familiesof those who lost loved ones in Surfside, know all toowell. But even when they are gone, they are not absent,so long as our minds reason and our hearts beat. Thedead are a part of us. We are all, according to theYiddish author, cemeteries that house the souls of thedeparted whom we honor now with prayer, remembranceand faith.

While our departed loved ones lie in the dust, may theyalso reside in a more permanent and sacred place.

Picking Up Where They Left Off

The Mourner’s Kaddish never mentions death. Instead, whenwe say this prayer, we assert that God’s name will bemagnified and sanctified. So why is it, then, that the Kaddishis the signature prayer of the mourner? This year, oneanswer to this age old question resonates with me morethan the rest.

To think about, let alone speak of, the magnitude of loss wehave endured this year due to the coronavirus is almostunbearable. So this year, the hesitancy to mention death inthe Kaddish particularly resonates. To mention death canoverwhelm us but the Kaddish reminds us that we need noteven speak of death to remember our loved ones. When wehave no words, we can act. Through our traditions and actsof lovingkindness, we honor those who we remember.

Our care for our Jewish community, our devotion tohumanity, our creativity, and our dedication to justice, areall reflections of the divine spark within each of us.Therefore, our good deeds on this earth are a magnificationand sanctification of God’s name. When we die, we can nolonger impact this world through our deeds. As it says inPsalm 115, “The dead cannot praise the Lord, nor any who godown into silence. But we will bless the Lord now andforever.” So through the words of Mourner’s Kaddish,mourners pick up the baton set down by the person theyare remembering. The deeds of the deceased may be nomore, but the words of the mourner allow their deeds tocontinue to reverberate.

The Kaddish does not explain why loss is part of our world.Attending a Yizkor service does not always make us feel anymore ready to speak of death. Nevertheless, we pray thatgathering together to remember will inspire us to go backout into the world and honor the memories of our lovedones through our deeds which magnify and sanctify thename of our Creator.

O Lord of life, our times are in Your hand. One generation comes intothe world to be blessed with days of peace and safety; another goesthrough the valley of the shadow enduring the cruelties of persecutionand war. Heartbreaking have been the times that have fallen to our lot,O God. We have lived through years of tyranny and destruction; weare schooled in sorrow and acquainted with grief. We have seen thejust defeated, the innocent driven from their homes, and the righteoussuffer a martyrdom as merciless as any ages have witnessed.

At this hour of memorial we recall with grief all Your children who haveperished through the cruelty of the oppressor, victims of demonic hates:the aged and young, the learned and unlettered--all driven in multitudesalong the road of pain and pitiless death. Their very presence on earth wasbegrudged them, for they brought Your covenant of mercy and justice tothe recollection of Your enemies; they perished because they were asymbol of Your eternal law; their death has brought darkness to thehuman soul.

They lie in nameless graves, in far-off forests and lonely fields. And thesubstance of many was scattered by the winds to the earth's fourcorners. Yet they shall not be forgotten. We take them into our heartsand give them a place beside the cherished memories of our own lovedones. They now are ours.

We pray to You, O Source of mercy, that Your Torah, to which Yourchildren bore witness in life and in death, may come to glow with arenewed light in the human soul; that, remembering them, we maysanctify Your name in all the world. Thus will their memory become anenduring blessing to all Your children.

The Ship

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my sidespreads her white sails to the morning breeze andstarts for the blue ocean.

She is an object of beauty and strength, and I standand watch her until, at length, she is only a speck ofwhite cloud just where the sea and sky meet andmingle with each other. Then someone at my sideexclaims, “There, she is gone!”

Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She isjust as large in hull and mast and spar as she waswhen she left my side, and just as able to bear herload of living freight to the place of her destination.Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at the moment when someone at my sidesays, “She’s gone,” there are other eyes watching forher coming and other voices ready to take up theglad shout, “There, she comes!”And that is dying.
