Cross Country Heritage

With 14 fi rst or second place NCAA trophies earned during the course of the last fi ve cross country and

track seasons, another Golden Era for TrackTown USA is undeniably underway, due in no small part to the vision and leadership of two men - Vin Lananna, Oregon’s nationally renowned associate athletic director, and head coach Robert Johnson.

Th eir architectural work has produced powerhouse cross country and track and fi eld teams once again in TrackTown USA, and cemented the region’s reputation as the home of the nation’s elite runners.

Concurrently, the magnanimous haul of fi ve NCAA titles, plus nine more second-place fi nishes in the span of fi ve academic years has reenergized the passionate TrackTown fan base in the Eugene-Springfi eld community.

Th at list includes NCAA titles in men’s cross country (2008), men’ indoor track (2009) and women’s indoor track (2010-11-12), plus runner-up fi nishes in men’s cross country (2009), women’s cross country (2008), men’s outdoor track (2009-10),

women’s outdoor track (2009-10-11-12) and men’s indoor track (2010).

Th e Ducks will open a new cross country season Sept. 1 at the Pier Park Invitational in Portland, Ore.

Th en the teams get serious by hosting the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 29 at Springfi eld Country Club. Th e seventh annual Dellinger Invitational will be the lone home meet for the Ducks in 2012.

Oct. 13 is a big weekend with a trip to the Pre-Nationals meet in Louisville, Ky., and a fi rst look at the course that will host the

Aft er a trip to Corvallis for the Beaver Classic on Oct. 19, the championship season begins with the Pacifi c-12 Conference meet Oct. 27 in Santa Clarita, Calif.

Th e the teams travel to Seattle for the NCAA West Region Championships on Nov. 9

From that, teams will qualify for the NCAA Championships, which for the fi rst time will be contested at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 17.
