Once again we are able to report on a number of positive moves to improve our town.

We include an interview with the Mayor, Dianne Fernee (pages 16/17) - who inspired the creation of the Wymondham Business Group - and already the new organisation is seizing opportunities to bring more benefits to the town.Key to the group’s efforts is the district council’s “Market Towns Initiative” - an instrument created to distribute significant cash to Wymondham, Diss, Loddon and Harleston.

Thanks to work done by the Business Group before the district council’s “Initiative” got off the ground Wymondham has a head start in claiming its share of the cash.

It’s not yet clear just how Wymondham will fair in the “Initiative” stakes but given its head start it must be in with every chance of achieving a good deal.

The scene is set for our town council to give these efforts a boost. While it struggles with the baggage surrounding the Kings Head Meadow debacle here is a golden opportunity for it to play a big role in promoting the cause of Cash for Wymondham.

It’s great to hear the Pabulum Café - catering for dementia

sufferers and their carers - is doing so well.

The weekly sessions are so popular that soon it may be necessary to look for more ways of meeting the demand.

When I went to one of the regular sing-songs I was amazed at how the music stirred such emotion and enthusiasm.

Now the magic of the musical sessions is to be made available more widely with the recording on CD of the group’s favourite songs.Copies of the CD will go free to members of the group with the idea that they can join in a sing-song at home at any time they fancy.

What a splendid idea.

The NHS comes in for plenty of stick so

it’s great to see ringing endorsements for our doctors’ surgeries on the social networking site Streetlife.

On things medical its moans that usually dominate but amid the dozens of comments not one of them is critical of our local GPs and many sing their praises.

The only complaint is that the surgeries are so well used it’s sometimes difficult to get an appointment.

Wanted - a way through the moral maze

I missed the short and not-so-sweet meeting of the town council back in February that apparently ended

being abandoned amid acrimonious scenes. I caught up with the sorry state of affairs at a subsequent meeting when, inevitably, the Kings Head Meadow saga rumbled on… and on…

Since the fateful day when it was decided it might be a good idea to build a supermarket on Wymondham’s precious open space there has been endless rancour.

The immediate threat of such a plan has long since been overturned but for the town council a great dilemma

remains. Can our elected councillors be trusted to safeguard the meadow forever or do we need a legally formulated trust to do so?

Here’s a moral maze if ever there was one. The council’s answer – ask the experts. So now the council is to fork out for the people who usually gain most from these situations – the lawyers

– to explain the options.

The screening of old films at The Regal Experience – housed

in the Ex-services Club - is always popular and next time a veteran of the silver screen, Vera Day, will be making a personal appearance.

Vera appeared in the 1955 film, A Kid for Two Farthings and is seen here in a publicity shot for the film. The whimsical comedy-drama is the next screening on Sunday May 18th.

During her career Vera Day starred with the likes of Peter Sellers, John Mills and Leslie Phillips, as well as with Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe in the 1957 movie The Prince and the Showgirl.

On Sunday June 8th, Quartet, a comedy released in 2012, will be screened. Set in a home for retired musicians, its cast includes

Maggie Smith, Pauline Collins, Tom Courtenay and Billy Connolly.

The shows start at 2.30pm and tickets are available from Maureen Dodman (tel: 01953 605593) or Michael Armstrong (tel: 01953 603246) and at Simply Cards, Market Street, Wymondham. They are priced £5 (concessions £4).

Congratulations are in order for the courageous

founders of Kett’s Books, the new community-run bookshop in Wharton’s Court.

At a time when bookshops are closing down all over the place one has to wonder how this can be sustained. But the organisers are full of optimism and much of this is founded on the belief that reaching out to schools and getting really involved in the local community will bring results.

The café next door should prove an extra enticement to bring in the shoppers… On a sunny day the outside seating area is often crowded and an ideal place from which to pop into the bookshop.

Let’s wish Kett’s Books every success.

P lans are already steaming ahead for the next Dickensian Steampunk Fayre. The date is Saturday

December 6th and the event will build on the format established last year that gave a novel twist to the long-established Dickensian theme.

It may seem a long way off but the band of organisers are keen to make sure this year’s event is even bigger and better.

I heard a few moans about the lack of activity last year around Town Green and I gather that there are plans afoot to provide more of a draw at this end of town this time.

Also, one of Santa’s little helpers tells me the reindeer that appeared at the 2012 Dickensian event may once again already be on their way from the land of ever-lasting snow to pay another call here…

Community-backing the vital ingredient for Kett’s Books

Q. How did the idea of a Community Bookshop come about?

Chris: When Robert retired and closed The Book Fountain before Christmas, a number of us who cared about having a bookshop in Wymondham gathered together to see what we could do. We didn’t want Wymondham to have only banks, building societies and charity shops. But more importantly, we cared about offering people the chance to browse and read, to give young people the chance to explore a bookshop, and to find ways to reach out. Such opportunities might easily disappear.

Tracy: The shop’s existence came about through community sharing a vision, and was funded in the same way: local people offered interest-free loans to get us started. And being a Community Interest Company means we are a not-for profit, and legally required to serve plough any surplus back into the shop and its outreach activity.

Q. How have things gone so far?

Tracy: We are really pleased. We launched on 1st February with the shop and courtyard packed with people. The ribbon was cut by the Chair of the County Council, the Leader of South Norfolk and by Wymondham’s Mayor, and children from the town held the two ends of the ribbon.

Gracie and Ruby find books worth sharing at the new bookshop – and this one, they discovered, was worth buying too!

Promoting all that’s best in Norfolk’s fast-growing town

Last autumn Wymondham was facing the prospect of another empty shop in the town centre. In a first for our town, a committed group of volunteers pulled together to re-open the independent bookshop in Wharton’s Court as a social enterprise. Despite the pressures of time, a need for funding, and a lack of experience, the shop opened on 1st February with over 150 people celebrating the community-run shop, which is trading as Kett’s Books. Here CHRIS BROWN, one of the Company Members, and TRACY KENNY, one of the Directors, explain how they are facing the challenge of a changing book industry.

Bookshop aiming to reach out into the community

Q. The man in the street might say it’s foolish to hope to run a bookshop in the face of rising on-line sales, and supermarkets offering best sellers at cut prices. Why struggle?

Chris: We are aware of these pressures, but we know from what Robert achieved that people value the service a local shop can offer. If we don’t hold a book in stock, we can nearly always order it for next day. And because we’re being run by the community, we have more energy and resource to reach out into schools, use our own website, and respond to and involve the community.

Q. What outreach have you done so far?

Tracy: Part of our original vision was to re-introduce World Book Week to Wymondham, and in early March we had 800 books for distribution to local schools. We took nearly 200 of these into Robert Kett Junior School. Children were encouraged in the reading habit, and had the excitement of claiming a book an excitement we hope will spread to their families.

Q. Why Kett’s Books?

Tracy: Come and see us. Have a look at the website, Like us on Facebook, and become a Friend. We’ve got places for a few more volunteers. And most of all, shop with us. We have proven ourselves a success as a community, and for the community. Now we need the community to give back to us, shop with us, and prove us a success as a business.

We’ve also begun a Friends’ group for those who want to support us more formally. By donating £20 or more, Friends will be kept informed of what’s going on, and have a 10% discount until the end of 2015. It’s been very popular, which again proves the local encouragement.

Chairman of Wymondham Music Festival John Wood steps down

secured a deal with Morrisons supermarkets to supply half-a-million chickens a week.

E vents create a sense of community, and being part of

a community means people feel a sense of pride and ownership of the area they live in.

This is important in an age when we have busy lives and not much time to spend together. If we stand any chance of getting people back in to our town centres we have to give them a reason to do so.

The experience has to be worthwhile. Let's face it, it's so much easier to

shop online, or nip to a mall and get everything under one roof. That said, the horsemeat scandal proved so powerfully that these organisations don't always offer a better product or better prices, or support local farmers and suppliers. A lot of the time they don't even know where their products are from, they simply get the best price.

Our job, therefore, is to smarten up our act and let people know what makes town centre shopping more rewarding and a better place

for families to spend their free time.

Better local produce, better quality, better service and a bit of a chat with people you can get to know and trust. It's no surprise that the Music Festival brings more people to the town. The Mid Norfolk Railway brings visitors too. The Abbey also draws a great number of people to Wymondham, and so on, but do they feel enticed to shop here? This is the big challenge…

Do we want to shop like this?

Or, let’s face it,

like this!

The chairman of the Wymondham Business Group, David Disney, poses questions about some of the stark choices the town centre faces in securing a thriving future and points to the staging of

special events as a way of bringing people into the market town.

We as business owners must address the real needs of today's market, we must entertain people.

Excellent customer service and knowledgeable staff are not enough.

We have to accept that quality cafés, bustling farmers markets and music festivals are a really important part of why people will buck the trend and visit the town centre at all.

So it follows that if we can engage these people in joining in the Carnival we are staging in July and events like it – including the schools, clubs and associations in our plans - then future shoppers will be actively involved in the town centre from the start.

If we view the town centre as a giant shopping mall, with lots of individual shops all pulling together to attract the same audience, we stand a chance of success. We need to be open when customers need to shop, and if that means a late night, then so be it! We need to pull together and put on events that bring in all parts of the community, and all interest groups into our town centre. When, and only when we market ourselves as a unit will we have the unified voice and the brand that Wymondham needs to create.

It's not going to be easy, and it won't work overnight, but it's no good having poor car parking, poor sign-age, confusing opening hours, and lack of communication with our audience and expecting it all to turn out all right. The WBG can keep coming up with ideas, and we can lobby for funding, but ultimately the future is in the hands of the people. Join the fight to protect the community of the town centre, or the consequences don't bear thinking about.

The town’s future? It’s all in the hands of

the people

Mayor Dianne Fernee just loves getting stuck into things….

Stuck into helping the town’s dementia support group, serving as a trustee - and making the tea!

Stuck into helping on the town’s Youth Bus where youngsters swap skate-boarding for a coffee with the Mayor…

And, most of all, in a host of ways, stuck into making Wymondham a better place both to live and to visit.

The one thing she is not so sure about being stuck into – at least in the long term – is local politics. Wymondham’s town council chamber has proved a hotbed of strife in recent years and Dianne Fernee says she is “very, very undecided” about her future there beyond her present three-year term.

Meanwhile she is more concerned about getting things done via the newly-formed Wymondham Business Group – her own baby and one she intends to stick with in the long term.

As Wymondham struggled with the aftermath of attempts to site a supermarket on the revered Kings Head Meadow it was the newly-elected Mayor Fernee who last spring brought together

business people with the drive and enthusiasm to push through new initiatives aimed at revitalising the town centre.

“I just thought that as the mayor it was my job and I was perhaps the one person who could bring people together,” she said. “That was all I thought I would really do.”

But her involvement has become a deal more than that. From rallying support for an initial meeting she spearheaded the inauguration of the new Wymondham Business Group and is now a director - determined to see it flourish as a long-term force.

Together with the group’s chairman David Disney she is deeply involved in seeing the town benefits from

the district council’s “Market Towns Initiative” designed to steer funds into improvements for Wymondham, Diss, Harleston and Loddon.

It’s not easy work. “We’re a bit fed up with all these quangos,” she says. “Dave (Business Group chairman David Disney) and I are a bit noisy and if we don’t get what we want we will be even more noisy."

”I want to see the business group look at drawing up a future plan for the town centre. I want to see this put down in a document so we can say this is what we want - this is our vision for Wymondham. A formal document, something concrete, to say this how we want to see it as a thriving town centre."

“What we have to do is trade on our assets. We have to market the town as a place to visit for the day. We want a lot of small unusual shops, a bit like Holt, but we have a lot more to offer too – phenomenal buildings such as the Abbey and we are very close to the main A11. We need to market the town much more forcibly.”

Aside from all this, Dianne Fernee makes her family a high priority. A widow, she shares

Formality in the Abbey – with the Vicar of Wymondham, the Revd Canon Christopher Davies

her bungalow home with Daisy, her 18-year-old cat.

She is very close to her elderly parents, who live nearby, and is on hand to care for their growing needs. And she is often on the road between Wymondham and Reepham, visiting the home of her son and grand-children.

She spent most of her working life as a nurse and later a cardiac technician. Then – in her Fifties – she put aside her nursing career and took a degree course in medieval history at the UEA, drawn to the subject by her interest in architecture and especially churches (in her spare moments she Weddings Verger at the Abbey).

The Mayor’s Charity is a tradition attached to the post and Mayor Fernee’s chosen beneficiaries are the local cancer support organisation, Star Throwers, The East Anglian Air Ambulance and Jack, an eight-year-old local brain-damaged lad. She aims to raise funds to create a sensory room for him.

Fund-raising events have included a garden party at her parents’ home, a fashion show (she tried her hand as a model), a quiz and chip night and a remarkable stunt - training with the Wymondham ladies’ rugby team. “I love rugby and thoroughly enjoyed it – getting very muddy – and raising £300.”

Her crowded diary often centres on the work being done in the town for dementia sufferers and their carers. Wymondham – now branded as a

Dementia-Friendly Town - is being used as a hub to encourage and inform others of what can be done. People involved in local businesses have been offered special training in how to respond to the needs of dementia sufferers and weekly sessions at the Pabulum Café attract dozens of sufferers and their carers.

The Mayor is often there – she is a trustee of the organisation – and perhaps lending a hand in the kitchen.

The Youth Bus is another passion. Set up by Wymondham’s churches, it provides a regular informal meeting place for youngsters and Diane Fernee is a frequent visitor, meeting the youngsters and supporting the volunteers who run the weekly sessions. The creation of a “youth council” encouraging youngsters to get involved in local affairs, is another of her ambitions. She is actively involved with plans for the revival of the town carnival

this summer and with the plans for the annual Christmas Dickensian event.

A lynchpin between town organisations, she says: “I sometimes get confused which committee meeting I’m at!”

It’s all part of her getting-stuck-in philosophy. The philosophy that led to an award as National Branding Champion for the Co-op, when working as an assistant in the Market Place pharmacy to support herself while studying at UEA. She pulled things together as its identity switched from Boots to the Co-op. Her prize took her on a family holiday to Disney-land in Florida.

The future? She doesn’t dismiss staying in local politics but of another term as mayor, she says” “I keep getting asked this… it’s not my decision. My deputy has been amazingly supportive and I know he will carry on as much as he can with what we are doing.”

Her final thought: It’s up to people to judge whether I’ve done it right or not.”

Do you know how Wymondham’s famous Market Cross came to be built? How many uses has

Becket’s Chapel had since it was built in 1174?

These questions and many more besides will be answered in a series of Wymondham history and heritage Walks and Talks, planned for the spring and summer.

Your guide will be Wymondham resident Georgette Vale. Georgette came to the town with her husband Tony in 1997 and since then she has taken every opportunity to share her passion for this lovely little town of ours.

Of her two hour stroll, passing some of the most iconic buildings in the county, she says: “Wymondham has so many jewels in its crown…My Walk and Talk will highlight them and hopefully it will be a taster for those wishing to explore the town at their leisure.”

One set of Walks and Talks will be take place on the first Friday of each month, beginning on 2nd May through to October, meeting at 11.00am at the Market Cross, after a special introductory walk on St George’s Day (23rd April).

There will also be a series of Wednesday Walks and Talks, to coincide with the arrival of the first train of the day into Wymondham on the Mid-Norfolk Railway at 11.15am. These monthly Wednesday strolls will begin on 30th April.

Tickets (£5 with concessions for children under 12) can be booked in advance by telephoning Georgette on 07867 681839 or e-mail [email protected]. Group bookings and private tours can also be arranged at a time to suit you (special rates for groups).

More than 2,000 people sign a petition opposing the plan to merge the Suffolk and Norfolk police

emergency control rooms and run the joint operation from the Wymondham police headquarters.

A public meeting is held to seek ways of ensuring Wymondham Football Club’s survival as it battles

to resolve issues over its finances. Offers of support come from the packed gathering of over 150 people as the club presents it plans for the future.

Early plans for the a Wymondham Carnival this July – the first for many years – are

announced with a seaside theme being at the centre of events. A talent competition and a walking procession will be among the attractions.

Concern over timetable changes at Wymondham High Academy is resolved after consultation with

parents. Teaching time will now end at 2.10pm on Tuesdays instead of the proposed 2pm and overall hours will be “virtually unchanged”.

P lans to unite the Norfolk and Suffolk police control centres under one roof at the Wymondham police

HQ provoke a row between the county’s chief constables with the Suffolk chief resisting the move and Norfolk’s top police officer, Chief Constable Simon Bailey, warning failure to go ahead will lead to significant staff losses.

At the annual public meeting of Wymondham Music Festival,

retiring chairman John Wood handed over the reins to Richard Elliott, retired Chief Fire Officer for Norfolk. John will continue as chairman of the charity’s trustees, and will act as Richard’s vice-chairman during 2014.In his 14 years as chairman John has seen the festival grow from tentative beginnings to become one of Norfolk’s leading music festivals.

It prides itself on trying to include as many different musical styles and genres as possible, to offer free events where funding allows and to keep ticket prices affordable. The festival also aims to promote live local music, whether or not it is directly involved in organising events and concerts. It offers local music societies and organisations space in its large and comprehensive full-colour programme, published each May and current until the autumn.John believes the festival has a bright future, despite the increasing difficulty of securing funds from grant-awarding bodies.

He said: “As an entirely volunteer organisation, the festival does not have to cope with the difficulties and risks arising from employing and financing paid staff. It also has the opportunity to revitalise itself

Music helps in putting Wymondham on the mapSince its formation back in 1995 Wymondham Music Festival has grown in stature to become

the town’s premier cultural event. This year, after 14 years at the helm as chairman, JOHN WOOD handed over the reins and so begins a new chapter in the story of the festival’s development…

John Wood (left) hands over the chairmanship to Richard Elliott at the annual meeting.

by finding new volunteers with different skills and interests, a process which is actively taking place at the moment.

“New, younger members are joining the team, bringing in new ideas and allowing some of the founder members to take a back seat sit back and enjoy the music!”

At the public meeting John reflected on his 14 years in the hot seat. “The time has flown,” he said, and it has been great fun, more than I’d ever imagined when I accepted the role.

“There are two things which have impressed me. One is the quality of the team I’ve been lucky enough to work with - so many different people, so many different styles and abilities and musical interests.

“The other thing is the feeling that together we have really been achieving something for Wymondham. We’ve helped to put

our town on the cultural map of Norfolk, and we’ve worked with local music organisations to give all the people who live here the chance to experience first-hand the joys of live music.

“ I want to thank them, and all our local councils, businesses patrons and supporters who make it all financially possible. So a very big thank you to all who have given me one of the most rewarding experiences of my working life.

Every year something different, but not too much! The

Wymondham Heritage Museum is managed by a small committee of volunteers. As well as the day to day running of the museum we also think ahead. One of the aspects is always “What will be the theme for next year’s display, and the year beyond that?” What stories do we want to tell? In fact we already have plans for 2015 and 2016.

In 2012 we started to think about how we would tell the story of Wymondham in World War One in 2014. The answer to that question is now on display until October this year. The key issue was local; Archduke Ferdinand, Kaiser Bill and military strategy were not issues... The stories we wanted to tell were about the town and its people. Of the 1200 men from the town who served in the war, where did they serve? What did they do? What happened to some of them?

We have about 2500 items in our collection, of which only about 2 percent is on display at any one time, so we bring out some of the appropriate items in store to display.

Museum puts Wymondham at the heart of wartime memories

PIP WOODWARD, chairman of the Wymondham Heritage Museum committee, sets the scene for the museum’s 2014 season where new exhibits will mark the story of

Wymondham 100 years ago with the outbreak of the first world war.

Tommy in full battledress stands guard over the museum’s new exhibits

We then carry out research from documents and other sources to create the new stories.

This year we have had access to personal diaries, photo albums,

letters and equipment all of which have been generously loaned by people who are proud of what their relatives did 100 years ago.

One innovation this year is the “Community Cabinet Project”. Assisted by a grant from Arts Council England we have a cabinet that is for “The People” to use to show off items that are of interest to them, and maybe others. This year is World War One stories, next year you tell us. If there is something you collect that is your passion you would like to share, come and talk to us to arrange “Your Display in YOUR Museum”. Contact the museum during open hours, Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm or me, Pip Woodward, on 01953 423046.

There’s no doubt about it: the prizewinning Wymondham

Heritage Museum is one of the best if its kind that I have seen in more than half a century of sniffing out interesting venues in Britain’s small market towns.

Not only are the exhibits well thought out, informative and attractively displayed, the use of modern sensor-activated commentaries make it as easy on the ear as it is on the eye.

There is only one problem about this great exhibition of the town’s past – it is difficult to find even in a small town like Wymondham. And when I finally discovered it the last hurdle was crossing the road on a dangerous junction.

The museum deserves better signposting from the town centre car parks and points of entry to the town. There could also be more brochures available in more outlets, such as some of the pubs and other tourist attractions in the town as well as the tourist office.

The two ladies looking after the exhibits on the day I visited were obviously very proud of the place, as no doubt are the other 120 volunteers that tirelessly support the exceptional regional museum in a model prison.

After a warm welcome, a free guide, I clocked in on a 1920s machine and set out on a journey through the ages, through blood chilling prison 18th century cells with equally chilling narratives, to Victorian times and tableaux charting the former glories of the town’s brush making history and hardships through two world wars.

I should have allowed more time because the visit into another world

and time zones was fascinating. Locals visit regularly I was told because exhibits change fairly frequently. School visits swell the visitor numbers but I am convinced that better signposting would bring in more passing visitors.

On the Saturday I visited the total number of visitors was 22. It could and would attract a lot more than that if it was easier to find.

Recipe for museum’s success – make it easier to find!

On a visit to Wymondham, former newspaper editor and marketing expert, EDDIE DULLER - who has visited many of the world’s top tourist spots - gives his impression of the town’s Heritage Museum.

One of the many glimpses into the past at the museum.

Equity release can play a crucial role in retirement funding and

the flexibility and safeguards built into all plans approved by the Equity Release Council enable thousands of home owners every year to tap safely in to their housing wealth, without having to worry about making monthly repayments.

The two main schemes for people over 55 are Lifetime Mortgages and Home Reversion Plans with drawdown options also available.Approved schemes allow you to: *Remain in your property for life, providing the property remains your main residence*Move your plan to another suitable property without any financial penalty, subject to criteria*Guarantee you will never owe more than the value of your home and no debt will ever be left to your estate. Many people use this money to repay an existing mortgage, make home improvements, buy a new car and even go on a holiday of a lifetime, while others may wish to offer financial assistance to their children or to improve their own quality of life in retirement.

The two types of equity release -Lifetime Mortgages and Home Reversion Plans - are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. By using an equity release product, a

home owner can draw a lump sum or regular sums from the value of their home, while remaining in their home.

If you are thinking of taking out an equity release plan then you need to find out as much as you can about your options and weigh up the advantages and disadvantages fully before you decide if equity release is right for you.

A fully qualified financial adviser will help you to understand the steps involved and talk you through your options, the effects this might have on State benefits and your tax obligations.

And of course, explain the full benefits of equity release. With the correct advice, equity release should

have no impact on an individual's tax position or their State benefits, however, each individual’s needs will be assessed.

How rising house prices can help your retirementAs Wymondham’s housing boom continues - and home owners see the value of their properties

rise - there is growing interest among those of advancing years in finding the best way to reap the benefits…Here MICHAEL BOON, a member of the Equity Release Council, explains the options.

Michael Boon is principal partner in Business Matters, independent insurance and mortgage brokers in Norfolk and Suffolk and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority No 301141. To understand the features and risks of a lifetime mortgage ask for a personalized illustration.
