Authorities say woman used pajama pants to strangle daughter OTTUMWA (AP) — A September trial has been scheduled for an Iowa woman accused of using pajama pants to strangle her 5-year-old daughter. Wapello County District Court records say 23-year- old Kelsie Thomas, of Ot- tumwa, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-de- gree murder and child en- dangerment resulting in death. Her trial start is set to start Sept. 10. Police and medics were sent July 19 to Thomas’ home in Ottumwa after a 911 call. Her daughter, Cloe Thomas, was pronounced dead later at a hospital. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has said Kelsie Thomas told investigators that she killed Cloe. Expert details injuries Iowa boy sustained while captive ELDORA (AP) — The injuries prosecutors say an 8-year-old boy sustained at the hands of his father and a woman who confined the boy in a basement have been detailed in court. Pediatric nurse practi- tioner Ann Swisher said Wednesday one of the U-shaped marks on the boy’s buttock was like- ly the result of him being spanked by a flyswatter. Prosecutors wrapped up their case against 40-year-old Traci Tyler on Wednesday. The defense didn’t call any witness- es. Both sides will submit written briefs before the judge rules likely some- time in March. “Her specific intent was to break this kid,” said Assistant Iowa Attorney General Laura Roan. Swisher said during the bench trial that the other marks she observed on the boy were more difficult to identify because they were healing. Prosecutors say Tyler and Alex Shadlow locked the boy in their home, in a space under the basement stairs, for at least nine hours a day in the summer of 2017. The two are both charged with kidnapping. The boy told authorities he was required to sleep on concrete and use a tin cup for a toilet. Food was also withheld at times. Prosecutors say Tyler also urged her dog to at- tack the boy, which left scars on his back and limbs. School officials report- ed their concerns after the boy described his life at the home in Ackley, Iowa. One of Tyler’s attor- neys, Ted Fisher, said she shouldn’t be charged with a crime. “We’re not suggesting that putting a kid under the stair enclosure is good parenting ... but parents do have the right to inflict corporal punishment,” Fisher said. Shadlow’s trial will start later. Feds accused former Des Moines radio host of fraud DES MOINES (AP) — An April trial has been scheduled for a former Des Moines sports radio host who’s accused of de- frauding people out of $1.5 million. U.S. District Court re- cords say Martin “Marty” Tirrell pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two counts of bank fraud, two of wire fraud, one of mail fraud and one of access device fraud. His trial is set to be- gin April 1 in Des Moines. His attorney didn’t imme- diately return a call Thurs- day from The Associated Press. The Des Moines Reg- ister reports that Tirrell had hosted talk shows for years and appeared on Mediacom’s local cable shows. The court documents say he told investors in 2016 and 2017 that he would buy sports tickets and resell them at profits they could share. He orig- inally paid them back and provided them with VIP access to events. But pros- ecutors say Tirrell eventu- ally began using the inves- tors’ money on personal items or to pay back other people who’d invested.

Authorities say woman used pajama pants to

strangle daughter OTTUMWA (AP) — A

September trial has been scheduled for an Iowa woman accused of using pajama pants to strangle her 5-year-old daughter.

Wapello County District Court records say 23-year-old Kelsie Thomas, of Ot-tumwa, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-de-gree murder and child en-dangerment resulting in

death. Her trial start is set to start Sept. 10.

Police and medics were sent July 19 to Thomas’ home in Ottumwa after a 911 call. Her daughter, Cloe Thomas, was pronounced dead later at a hospital.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has said Kelsie Thomas told investigators that she killed Cloe .

Expert details injuries Iowa boy sustained while captive ELDORA (AP) — The

injuries prosecutors say an 8-year-old boy sustained at the hands of his father and a woman who confined the boy in a basement have been detailed in court.

Pediatric nurse practi-tioner Ann Swisher said Wednesday one of the U-shaped marks on the boy’s buttock was like-ly the result of him being spanked by a flyswatter.

Prosecutors wrapped up their case against 40-year-old Traci Tyler on

Wednesday. The defense didn’t call any witness-es. Both sides will submit written briefs before the judge rules likely some-time in March.

“Her specific intent was to break this kid,” said Assistant Iowa Attorney General Laura Roan.

Swisher said during the bench trial that the other marks she observed on the boy were more difficult to identify because they were healing.

Prosecutors say Tyler

and Alex Shadlow locked the boy in their home, in a space under the basement stairs, for at least nine hours a day in the summer of 2017. The two are both charged with kidnapping.

The boy told authorities he was required to sleep on concrete and use a tin cup for a toilet. Food was also withheld at times.

Prosecutors say Tyler also urged her dog to at-tack the boy, which left scars on his back and limbs.

School officials report-ed their concerns after the boy described his life at the home in Ackley, Iowa.

One of Tyler’s attor-neys, Ted Fisher, said she shouldn’t be charged with a crime.

“We’re not suggesting that putting a kid under the stair enclosure is good parenting ... but parents do have the right to inflict corporal punishment,” Fisher said.

Shadlow’s trial will start later.

Feds accused former Des Moines radio host of fraud DES MOINES (AP) —

An April trial has been scheduled for a former Des Moines sports radio host who’s accused of de-frauding people out of $1.5 million.

U.S. District Court re-cords say Martin “Marty” Tirrell pleaded not guilty

Wednesday to two counts of bank fraud, two of wire fraud, one of mail fraud and one of access device fraud. His trial is set to be-gin April 1 in Des Moines. His attorney didn’t imme-diately return a call Thurs-day from The Associated Press.

The Des Moines Reg-ister reports that Tirrell had hosted talk shows for years and appeared on Mediacom’s local cable shows.

The court documents say he told investors in 2016 and 2017 that he would buy sports tickets

and resell them at profits they could share. He orig-inally paid them back and provided them with VIP access to events. But pros-ecutors say Tirrell eventu-ally began using the inves-tors’ money on personal items or to pay back other people who’d invested.
