We are delighted that you will be joining us this Fall. You will find below important informationabout your first year courses and the registration process. This registration package can also beaccessed online at http://www.mcgill.ca/law-studies/orientation/.
In addition to academic information, we have also included a preliminary calendar of Orientationevents. Every year, the Law Students Association (LSA) plans a series of activities to welcomethe incoming B.C.L./LL.B. class. The LSA will be sending you additional Orientation informationin early August, along with an updated Calendar of Events. Be sure to visit their websiteregularly for updates: http://www.lsa-aed.ca.
Please note that McGill students receive an email notification at the McGill email address whenthe monthly e-bill is ready to view in Minerva. Payment due dates are available on theImportant dates for studentswebsite and on your e-bill. Fees are visible on Account Summaryby Term in early August and payment is due end of August. Additional information regardingfees is included in your attached registration package.

HOW TO REGISTER IN THREE STEPS_____________________________________________________________The first-year registration process can be summarized in three steps:
1) Confirm your intention to register on Minerva
Following the instructions, confirm your intention to register online via Minerva(McGills online student information system). The confirmation period isJuly 8thto July31st.
2) Register for your assigned course sections on Minerva
a) Course registration for Fall 2014 and Winter 2015 for all newly-admittedundergraduate students in Law will open on Minerva on August 1stat 9:00 a.m.
All incoming students will be assigned a specific group number for their FirstYear courses. You will be assigned to certain course sections on the basis of yourgroup number. Please note that you will receive your group number by emailon Friday, July 18.
You may decide whether to register on Minerva for the English OR Frenchsection to which you have been assigned. You may not register for a section ifyou have not been assigned to it by your group number.
Note that certain language sections may fill up quickly, so register early if yourlanguage selection is important to you. If you are unable to register for yourlanguage section of choice, please send an email to our Student Affairs Office [email protected] we do our best to accommodate language preferences,we cannot guarantee courses in the language of your choice.
b) Once classes begin, you will have the opportunity to switch into anotherlanguage section (if space permits) untilWednesday, September 10th.
3) Register in person on August 28th
You must come to the in-person registration at the Faculty (3660 Peel Street) on August28that 10:00 a.m.Should you fail to do so, we will assume you no longer want to attendMcGill Law, and we will give your place to another candidate . If you cannot come inperson on August 28th, please advise the Admissions Office at 514-398-6602 [email protected].
Please note that the Faculty reserves the right to equalize the number of students betweensections of the same language before the start of classes. If we must move you into anothersection, we will advise you by email before classes begin. Introduction to legal research skills in Civil and Common Law jurisdictions, including computer-assisted research. CONFIRMATION OF REGISTRATION ON MINERVA(ENGLISH INSTRUCTIONS)
Minerva is certified compatible with the following web browsers:Internet Explorer 7 and 8, Firefox 3.6.10,and Safari 4.1.2 and 5.0.2.
1) Go to Minerva for students: www.mcgill.ca/minerva-students/
2) Enter your 9-digit McGill ID number and 6-digit PIN and click on Login.
Students who do not remember either their 6-digit Minerva PIN or the answer to theirsecurity question should call (514) 398-7878. Your Minerva PIN will be reset to your 6-digit birth date (yymmdd), and you will have to change it the next time you log in.
Note:If this is your first timeusing Minerva, your PIN will be the year, month and day ofyour birthday (yymmdd). For example, if your birthday is June 7, 1982, your Minerva
PIN will be 820607.The first time you log in, your PIN will expire and you must choose a new PIN based onthe rules below. You must then set up your security question (which will allow you toreset your PIN in case you forget it).
PIN Rules
1. Must be 6 characters long
2. Must contain at least one numeric and one alpha character
3. Must not contain the same character more than twice
3) Click on Student Menu.
4) Click on RegistrationMenu.5) Select Step 1: Check your Registration Eligibility and Verify Your Curriculum
Select the Fall 2014 term under the menuSelect a Term and then click on the Submitbutton.
6) In order to confirm your registration, you must add a Registration Confirmationcourseto your course schedule for boththe Fall and Winter terms. On the bottom of the Checkyour Registration Eligibility and Verify Your Curriculumpage, click on Quick Add orDropor go back to the previous page and select Step 2: Quick Add or Drop CourseSections. This option allows you to add or drop courses quickly for the term you haveselected.
7) You can add a course in the Quick Add Worksheet by entering the Course ReferenceNumber (CRN). For Fall 2014, the CRN for the Registration Confirmation Course is2333.
8) Click Submit Changes. The Registration course should be reflected in the CurrentSchedule table.
9) You have now confirmed your registration for Fall 2014, but you must also do the samefor the Winter 2015 term.

Return to the main menu by clicking on the MENUicon at the top right-hand corner ofthe screen.
Select Step 1: Check your Registration Eligibility and Verify Your Curriculum
Click on Change Term.
Select theWinter 2015term and then click on the Submit button.
10) Return to the main menu, click on Step 2: Quick Add or Drop Course Sections.Repeatsteps 7 and 8 (see above). For Winter 2015, the CRN for the Registration ConfirmationCourse is 2264.
11) Congratulations! You have just confirmed your intention to register. To log out, simplyclick on the EXITicon located at the top right-hand corner of the screen.

COURSE REGISTRATION VIA MINERVA
Log onto Minerva at www.mcgill.ca/minerva-students/.
Enter your 9-digit McGill ID number and 6-digit PIN and click on Login. Go to Student Menu,Registration Menu.
1. Register for first-year course sections based on the group number assigned to you. (Yourgroup number will be emailed to you on Friday, July 18, 2014.) You may choose toregister for either the English or French section assigned to you, space permitting.
Select Fall 2014 Quick Add or Drop Enter the CRN of the section for which you are registering.
2. Since all first-year courses are year-long, note that once registered for the Fall section, youwill automatically be registered in the Winter term. This applies only to first-yearstudents taking first-year courses.

GETTING YOUR STUDENT IDCARD

PREFERRED NAME
Your preferred first name is the name by which you are normally addressed, and can be different
than your legal first name. The Preferred First Name Procedure enables students to use analternate preferred first name for certain purposes while studying at McGill.
Students who wish to use a Preferred First Name should enter this information into Minervaas soon as possible in order to ensure that their preferred first name is used as widely aspossible.
The preferred first name may be used on all unofficial university documents and tools, such as:
McGill I.D. cards Class lists Student Advising Transcripts
The students legal name must appear on official university documents, such as:
Official university transcripts Reports to government Letters of attestation Diplomas and certificates Tuition fee e-bills
It is important to note that making a request to use a preferred first name at McGill does notchange a students legal name in the McGill student record or records with governmentauthorities.
You can provide a preferred first name on your application for admission or, once admitted,on Minerva, under the Personal Menu. From the Personal Menu, select Name Change and then addyour preferred first name in the preferred first name field.

The fees you pay at McGill arecalculated according to whether you are a Quebec resident, Canadian citizen or permanentresident, or an international student. Take note that you will be considered an internationalstudent until the reception of your proof of residency. During your law studies, a great deal of information will be accessible online, including certaincourse readings and registration materials. If you feel you will need guidance using theUniversitys online tools, you may attend one of the computer information sessions that will beheld at the Faculty during Orientation.
