The Heartland Museum seeks a bright motivated college student looking for a challenging and rewarding Summer internship June and July 2008. The internship requires 20 hours of work for eight weeks’ during June and July. This will include coordinating volunteers, graphic design, museum interpretation, and museum catalogue management.

Internship Responsibilities:Volunteer CoordinationThe first phase requires the intern to meet with volunteers who will construct the signage base of the outside exhibit. An antique tractor will be placed on a landscaped area next to the sign.

Signage and Outdoor Display DesignTogether with volunteers and their supervisor the intern will select the text for the outdoor sign. The intern will use knowledge of graphic design, word processing, desktop publishing, museum exhibit layout and construction, among other skills to design and develop text and images to illustrate the transition from prairie to power in a clear and concise manner. The intern will choose appropriate headings, typefaces, and style of text and images and combine these materials into an eye-catching display.

Museum InterpretationWhen not actively designing or supervising the outdoor display, the intern will greet and inform museum patrons. The Heartland’s mission is to preserve and interpret the rural heritage and unique collections of Clarion, Iowa, with an emphasis on the transition from prairie to agriculture.

Collections ManagementThe intern will also perform data entry into our museum collections catalogue using Past Perfect museum software.

Part of Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area - NPSThe Heartland Museum is part of this rich heritage corridor. Before beginning the intern and intern supervisor will attend a Silos and Smokestacks internship orientation either May 23 or May 30 at Silos and Smokestacks Headquarters in Waterloo, Iowa. This will familiarize interns of their responsibilities and their expectations.

Stipend – Along with invaluable experience in coordinating museum docents and volunteers and creating professional museum signage, the intern will be granted a modest stipend of $1440. ·Communications internships – Communications interns will assist the Communications Department in disseminating news from the Governor’s office. Official tasks include, but are not limited to: writing press releases and advisories, organizing and briefing the Governor, Lt. Governor and First Lady for press conferences, updating and maintaining press lists, pitching press events to the media, writing special letters and tracking media coverage of policy initiatives. Communications interns should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong computer skills and a willingness to learn.

·Policy internships – Interns will assist the Policy Department on issue tracking and policy development. ·Legal Internships – The Legal Department has two types of internships available. These internships provide students an excellent opportunity to observe the workings of state government from the center of the executive branch.

(1) One intern will work primarily with the Assistant to the General Counsel in matters such as the review of clemency files (restoration of firearms rights, pardons and commutations) and responding to correspondence. Students applying for this internship should be a first-year law school student or an undergraduate with an interest in attending law school.

(2) The second intern will work primarily with the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel. The intern will be assigned legal research and writing projects in a variety of areas of law, including, but not limited to, the following: administrative rules, ethics and open meetings/public records. Special projects may also be assigned. By way of example, in the past these projects have related to the environment and renewable fuels, and the governor’s emergency powers. The intern will be asked to attend various public hearings and/or public meetings and provide a written or verbal summary of the proceedings. Students applying for this internship should be enrolled in law school and possess strong legal research and writing skills and an ability to produce a high-quality work product in a short amount of time.
