HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW
Maintenance scheduled1. Top cold heads (re-condenser) exchange - once a year2. Bottom cold heads (shield cooler) exchange - depending on
temperature rise3. Compressor - replace absorber after about 18,000 hours of
operation4. Charge helium gas to compressor as needed5. Check and clean water cooling system as needed6. Service cold head valve as needed7. Refill wiggler with liquid helium about every 1.5 month (two
runs).

HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW
Observations (continued): Compressor’s internal settings were configured for
automatic re-start. The top right compressor was only able to be started at
120 rpm – would not start at a lower rpm. Ion pump is difficult to be changed Gaskets may become stiff during liquid Helium refill - heat
tape used.
www.lightsource.ca
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW
There is no isolation valve between ion pump and wiggler
www.lightsource.ca
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW
We have to plug the heat tapes to prevent leak from frost of rubber gasket
www.lightsource.ca
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW
Conclusion The wiggler runs at 1.9 Tesla successfully with the annual
maintenance/emergency repair and regular refill. The total times of cold heads’ replacement were met with
the schedule in 6.5 years. Compressors and transfer lines had lot more
replacements than we expected. The 30 degree angle seems to be a problem. Extra work on heat tape – each refill and maintenance.

HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW
Conclusion (continued): Average maintenance cost is more than 3 times the
maintenance cost of the BMIT Wiggler* Frequency of maintenance is approximately 3 times that
of the BMIT Wiggler* Liquid Helium consumption is much higher than the BMIT
Wiggler*
*BMIT Wiggler has seen limited operation
