A Roman soldier’s life isn’t easy.He has a hard and dangerous job. That’s why only those who are the strongest and fittest are allowed to join the Roman army.

It’s essential that anyone joining the Roman army knows how to obey orders without question.



In battle, shields are used as protection but also as a weapon.

The metal boss can be smashed into an enemy as can the rim of the shield.



Ordinary (regular) soldiers can become centurions by being brave and working hard.

Centurions must be able to read and write. They will be paid more than regular soldiers.

An officer wears a crest on his helmet and leg guards to show that he is an officer.
