Categories of PhD Students
The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:
i) REGULARA student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from
CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.
ii) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for
doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one
yearof professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
iii) SELF-FINANCED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category works full-time towards the PhD Programme. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to
such a student.
iv) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the PhD Programme to work on
a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets
completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless
he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate ( Form II) must be attached
with the application.
v) PART-TIME
A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme
while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of
professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A NoObjection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form III) must be enclosed at the time
of application.
vi) EXTERNAL
This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The
research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor
from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which
he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one yearof professional experience in
the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to s uch a student. A certificate from the Head of the
sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form IV) must be enclosed at the time of application.
Note: The word `Form used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to
PhD Programme.

Minimum CPI or Percentage of marks in the qualifying degree, with specific requirements for different streams, have been indicated
below:
Note: (a) For eligibility for financial assistance for regular category candidates, please see the section Financial Support
below.
(b) Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, Part-Time, and External categories of
candidates, have also been indicated below.
PhD in EngineeringFor admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Masters degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a relevant
area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum
CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
iii) Four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from
any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions . Details of the Institutions can be seen fromhttp://mhrd.gov.in/technical-

iv) A candidate having a Four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area, with aPostgraduate Degree in Management Science(Finance) or MBA with Finance specialization or equivalent, is also
considered for admission in the area of specialization `Construction Management, of the Department of Civil Engineering.
The candidate should have a minimum of 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in Bachelor's level and 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in the
postgraduate degree.
v) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelors level is also considered for
admission in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70%
marks in Masters level with consistent first class at other levels.
vi) Acandidate having a Two-year Master's degree (after completion of 4-year Bachelor's degree) or three-year Master's
degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor's degree) in Engineering/ Technology/Science in a relevant area with minimum
Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks,
OrA candidate with a Two-year MSc degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor's degree) in a relevant area with minimum
CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks,
is also considered for admission in the Department of Biotechnology.
vii) Postgraduates in Computer Science (ALCCS) from Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE),
with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks, are also eligible to apply for admission in to
PhD programme in Computer Science and Engineering
viii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0
at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning
of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.
ix) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her BTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth
semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her seventh semester of study.
Such students can receive dual BTech and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.
PhD in Design
For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Candidates having MArch/MDes degree or MTech/ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or
60% of marks.
ii) Masters degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics/Fine Arts/Psychology/Physiology/Occupational Safety and Health/ Journalism/
Mass Media Communication with a minimum CPI of 6.0 or 55% marks.

iii) Masters degree in Management (MBA or equivalent) with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks with relevant studies in
Design field, and Bachelors degree in any discipline.
iv) Four-year Bachelors degree or equivalent in Design or Engineering/Technology or Five-year BArch degree or equivalent in a
relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
v) Four-year Undergraduate Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent), with postgraduate qualification in relevant area with
a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
vi) Four-year Bachelors degree or equivalent in Design or Engineering/Technology or Five-year BArch degree or equivalent in arelevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. Details of the Institutions

vii) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelors level.
viii) BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after 10thstandard) with one year
professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
ix) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of
second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study.
Such students can receive only PhD Degree.
x) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her BDes s tudies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester
may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students
can receive dual BDes and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.
PhD in Science
For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following
criteria:
i) Masters degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Masters degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of
marks.
iii) Four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)/Indian
Institute of Science (IISc) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Four-year Bachelors degree in a related area in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science (from other than IITs/IISc) in a
relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences
For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one
of the following criteria:
i) Masters degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
ii) Masters degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60%
marks.
iii) Four-yearBachelors degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Four-yearBachelors degree in Engineering/Technology/Design or equivalent (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a
minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks.
For PhD in Centre for the Environment, Centre for Energy, and Centre for Nanotechnology
i) Masters Degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Architecture/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a
minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI
of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
iii) Four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any
of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. Details of the Institutions can be seen fromhttp://mhrd.gov.in/technical-

iv) Masters degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
v) Masters degree in Social Sciences, in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks, is also
considered for admission to the Centre for the Environment.
For PhD in Centre for Linguistic Science and Technology
i) Masters degree in Engineering/ Technology in CSE / ECE / EEE or equivalent / Master of Design with a minimum Cumulative
Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Master of Science in CSE / IT / ECE / Physics / Mathematics / Statistics/Speech and Language Pathology/ Audiology or
equivalent, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
iii) Master of Arts in Linguistics/any language with specialization in Linguistics/Language Studies or equivalent, with a minimum
CPI of 6.0 or 55% of marks.
iv) Four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering/ Technology in CSE / ECE / EEE or equivalent / Four-year Bachelors degree in
Design, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
v) Four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering/ Technology in CSE / ECE / EEE or equivalent / Four-year Bachelors degree in
Design, with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. Details of the Institutions

vi) Four-year Undergraduate Diploma in Design (NID/ CEPT or equivalent), with postgraduate qualification in relevant area with a
minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
vii) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID/ CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelors level.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE FOR SPONSORED, PART-TIME AND EXTERNAL CATEGORIES OF
APPLICANTS FOR PHD PROGRAMME
1. Candidate in Sponsored, Part-time and External categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at leastone yearof professional experience in the respective field.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES STILL TO APPEAR IN QUALIFYING
EXAMINATIONS
Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree
examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 15-07-2016. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally,
and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 22-08-2016. Further, they must fulfill the
minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and other conditions like valid GATE score/CEED score/NET or INSPIRE certificate (as may be
applicable) etc., as mentioned under eligibility criteria for respective programmes. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall
automatically result in cancellation of admission.

Relaxation for SC/ST/PwD Candidates:Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PwD applicants.
Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC(Non-creamy layer) and PwD categories.
OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format
indicated below. The OBC(NCL) Certificate, issued by competent authority, on or after 01-04-201 5, shall only be
acceptable.
Financial Support(For regular students, who are Indian nationals)
1. Institute assistantships will be available to eligible PhD students as per prevailing (MHRD, GOI/UGC) norms, as applicable from time to
time. The present rates of assistantships are as below:

Qualifying Degree Assistantship Rates
Junior Research Fellow(JRF)
B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent with valid and qualifying GATE score [valid and
qualifying CEED score (for Dept. of Design)] above the prescribed cut off level
OR M.Sc. or equivalent with GATE score above the prescribed cut off
level/NET/INSPIRE qualification OR M.A. in Humanities and Social Sciences or
equivalent with NET qualification OR ME/MTech or equivalent
[GATE/CEED/NET/INSPIRE score/certificate requirement is exempted for a
candidate with Masters (M.A./M.Sc.) degree from an Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0 OR a Bachelors (BTech/BDes)
degree from a Centrally Funded Technical Institution(CFTI) with minimum CPI
of 7.0] OR ME/MTech/MDes or equivalent
1st& 2ndYear : Rs.25,000/- p.m.
Senior Research Fellow(SRF)
JRF with 2(two) years of research experience

2. Assistantships from external funding organizations will be available as per terms and conditions of the concerned
funding organizations.
3. Students receiving assistantships from the Institute or fellowships from any other funding agencies, are required toperform academic duties as per prevailing norms.
4. The continuation o f the assistantship/fellowship i s subject to satisfactory performance of the a ssigned du ties andsatisfactory progress of the student in the PhD Programme.

For appearing in the PhD interview under regular category of candidates, to-and-fro sleeper class railway fare or equivalent will
be paid by the shortest route from the communication address to the Institute.
Application ProcedureFirst Step
Please get a print-outof the `Guideline for Filling-up Online PhD Application Form, by visiting the
concerned website given below.
Second Step
For filling-up Online Application Form, first of all, please keep ready with you the following
documents (includingscanned soft copies of some of the documents, as specified below, to be available
in your computer or CD or Pen Drive for direct uploading). Otherwise, you may have difficulty in
completing on-line submission of your application form.
(i) A SCANNED SOFT COPY of your recent coloured photograph of size more than 15 KB but
less than 80 KB (4.5 cm. x 3.5 cm.) with file type jpeg orjpg or gif only, for direct uploading in
to the Online Application Form. Please note that uploading of your coloured photograph is
mandatory.
IF A SCANNED COPY OF YOUR COLOURED PHOTOGRAPH IS NOT UPLOADED,
YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.
(ii) A copy of your Date of Birth(DoB) Certificate (this will be required, if DoB is not mentioned in your
Class X/XII Pass Certificate/Mark Sheet)
(iii) If applicable, A SCANNED SOFT COPY of your Caste Certificate [including OBC(NCL)
Certificate as per format prescribed below)], in image format like jpeg orjpg or gif only, of size
more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form.
Please note that OBC(NCL) certificate should be issued by the competent authority on or
after 01-04-2015.
ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU APPLY AS SC/ST/OBC(NCL) CANDIDATE, BUT

(Full-Time)/ IITGs Project Staff/ Part-Time/ External (Sponsored) etc.] - as per format

(vi) SCANNED SOFT COPIES of (a) Pass Certificate (Original/Provisional) and (b) Consolidated
Mark Sheet of the Qualifying Degree, size more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct
uploading in to the Online Application Form.
If you are not in a position to upload scanned copy of your qualifying degree pass certificate
due to reasons beyond your control, if called for Written Test and/or Interview , you will be
allowed to personally submit the same in the concerned Department/Centre on the day of Written
Test and/or Interview.
BUT, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED YOUR QUALIFYING DEGREE
PROGRAMME, AND DO NOTUPLOAD SCANNED COPY OF THE CONSOLIDATED
MARK SHEET, YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.
THOSE APPEARING IN THEIR FINAL EXAMINATIONwill need to scan and uploadonly
the Mark Sheet of previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree and this is
MANDATORY.
Please note that, if called for Written Test and/or Interview, the candidate will have to produce theOriginals as well as Attested copies of all the documents relating to educational qualifications (from
Class X onwards). This is also applicable for the result awaited candidates, except that along with
other required documents they will produce Original as well as attested copies of allMark Sheets up
to the previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree.
(vii) if applicable,Original Score Card/Certificate relating to your GATE/CEED/ NET/INSPIRE etc.*
(viii) if applicable, attested copy of Certificates relating to your profess ional experience etc.
(ix) Demand Draft : Demand Draft isNOT REQUIRED now. It will be required for a candidate only
and only if he/she is called to appear in Written Test and/or Interview.
In other words, if a candidate is shortlisted and called**to appear in Written Test and/orInterview, only then he/she will be required to arrange a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for
SC/ST/PwD candidates), from any nationalized bank, in favour ofINDIAN INSTITUTE OF
TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, payable at Guwahati.
Note: * If you are yet to receive the original GATE/CEED/NET/INSPIRE Score Card/ Certificate, at
least get the downloaded version of the same from the concerned website.
** Instead of waiting to receive the call letter, you may keep on visiting and seeing updates in the
website of the department/centre in which you are applying for admission.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUARE NOW NOT REQUIRED TO SEND HARD COPIES OFANY APPLICATION RELATED DOCUMENTS, INCLUDING THE DOWNLOADED ON-
LINE APPLICATION FORM OR ANY DEMAND DRAFT, TO THE INSTITUTE.
IF YOU ARE SHORTLISTED AND CALLED BY THE CONCERNED ACADEMIC
DEPARTMENT/CENTRE FOR WRITTEN TEST AND/OR INTERVIEW, THEN ONLY
YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PERSONALLY BRING ALL SUCH DOCUMENTS IN
ORIGINAL (ALONG WITH A SET OF DUPLICATE COPIES).

YOU CAN UPLOAD THESE DOCUMENTS ONLY AFTER SUCCESSFUL
SUBMISSION OF ONLINE APPLICATION FORM [i.e. only after (not before or
simultaneously) successful execution of `Final Submit function).
YOU ARE AGAIN REMINDED THAT UPLOADING OF DOCUMENTS AS STATED

The Courts at Guwahati alone shall have the jurisdiction to settle and decide all matters and disputes related to the above
