Directions (Qs.51-65): Read thefollowing passageand answer the
questions below it. Afew words are givenin the bold form tohelp easy locationwhile answeringsome questions.
To some extent,it is the nature of theintellect to narrow our vision and give i tfocus. Tragedy comesin when we forget thislimitation and think theintellect can
comprehend thingsas a whole. Theintellect views theworld through a slit. When a cat walks by,it observes the eye, then fur, and then thetail, and then it infersthat the eye is thecause of the tai l,unless of course, thecat was walkingbackward. If thi ssounds absurd, someof the theories aboutbiochemistry andbehaviour use verysimilar reasoning.Nachiketa wouldobject, “Man, whydon’t you open thedoor? That’s just your black cat Frodo, pacing back andforth.” But instead weusually get caught upin clari fying sl it-information, eventhough wi thout a
larger view our conclusions may beentirely wrong. Tomake matters worse,we specialize. I am notagainst specialization
per se but what oftenhappens is that we donot even look throughwhole slit; wesubdivide. My field isthe upper part of thetail; yours is the lower.I might even forgetabout the eye and the

whether hair on thetail grows up or down.If anybody asks howthe eye fits in, I refer him to another researcher. After all, what have eyes got todo with geotropic hair growth?

What isrequiredis toopen thedoor;thenargumentbecomesunnecessary.Once thedoor isopened, even alittle, we
will notquarrelover whoseslit iscorrect or whether weshouldconfineourselvesto the topof it or thebottom. As longas wesee onlypart of thepicture, logic andargumentation cannever settle anissue. When theintellect
becomescalm andclear, theorygivesway todemonstration . Itis notbeyondour reachto see lifewhole. We have
simply become soattached to thisprecious slit that wethink there is nohigher mode of knowing. After awhile, we become soused to slits that weput on a specialmask with just ahairline crack in frontof the eyes. Trywalking aroundwearing a mask likethis and see whathappens. Every littlething will fill your fieldof vision.
The intellect thatsees only a smallcorner of life makes avery poor guide. Wefollow it like the blindled by the blind. I see
this illustrated everyday in thenewspapers. To take
just one urgentexample, I have readthat perhaps half amillion scientists andengineers around theworld are engaged inweapons research. Ihave no doubt that thevast majority of thesepeople have no desirefor war. They feel theyare only doing a job, playing a small role inan inevitable activity.Nevertheless, this isnot a defence industry, this is a half a millionhighly skilled men andwomen preparing for war. Producing andselling instruments of war is one of thebiggest business inthe world today. Evenbefore the First WorldWar, George Bernard
Shaw caught the spiritof the industry in thecharacter of undershaft in Major Barbara. Undershaft isno sinister “merchantof death”. He is just abusinessman, whosecredo is to give armsto all who offer anhonest price for them, without respect of persons or principles,to capital ist andsocialist, to protestant

andcatholic,to burglar andpoliceman, to blackman, white manandyellowman, toall sortsandconditions, allnationalities andfaiths, allfollies, allcausesand allcrimes.
Thedefence-minded
intellectmightobject,“That’sunfortunate, butdefenceisnecessar y.Everybody has tohaveweapons,andsomebody is goingto sellthem.Here is abusinessthat isthriving”.Thesesales”,themerchantargue,“help
supplyallieswhocannotproduceneededequipment.”Neededfor what?Anyschoolboyknowsthat
weapons are neededby people in order tokill each other. Fromthe evidence, wewould have toconclude that deathis a much moredesirable goal thanhealth, education, or welfare.
Or, look atcancer. Manyresearchers todaymaintain thatperhaps seventy toninety per cent of allhuman cancers arecaused byenvironmentalagents involved inmanufacturing andprocessing newproducts. Most of these substancesare relatively recent
addit ions to our environment. Wemade them, and wecan cease to makethem if we choose.Yet one way or another suchsubstances appealto us so much thatlife without themseems untenable .As a result, insteadof trying to eliminatethe causes of cancer, we pour millions of dollarsinto what one writer calls “the Vietnam of modern medicine”:The Search for aCancer Cure.
This kind of myopia is not anecessary fault of the intellect. Givena larger picture, theintellect can rise tothe occasion. Theneven if the Nobel
Prize is dangledbefore its eyes, itwill refuse to workat any project thatis at the expense of life, but will give allits attention tomatters of realurgency. 51. Whichof theseistr ueincontexttothepassage:
