Hendricks County Master Gardeners "Adventures in Gardening" Seminar

Hendricks County Master Gardeners "Adventures in Gardening" seminar featured Brent Heath, a third generation bulb grower who grew up on his parent's daffodil farm. Heath spoke about bulbs as companion plants, creating a magical mystical meadow with bulbs and teaching a hands on workshop. Retired entomologist John Thieme presented "Living with Insects", 95% of those bugs are good! Thieme displayed 4 insect boxes and delighted the attendees with stories of the creatures. Master Gardeners gave away free seeds, garden vegetables and catalogs. The day ended with the planting of a flower pot arrangement for a spring bouquet. Oct 12, 2013 Doug Tallamy author of "Bringing Nature Home" will speak on creating biodiversity for our native wildlife.

Getting to know you….

Terry & Carol Doppler - Silver Level Master Gardeners

We wanted to take the Master Gardener class after moving from Utah to Indiana. We had been gardening in a desert and needed to find out what gardening in the Midwest was about. We also wanted to meet folks of like interests and have some fun. The Master Gardening projects we have been involved with are many and varied. We headed up the crew for the Plainfield Friendship Gardens, worked booths at the State Fair, Flower and Patio Show, 4H Fair, GFAA, have given library talks in Plainfield, Avon and Brownsburg. worked an information table at Wal-Mart, and put in a memory garden for Janice Shauwecker’s son. We have given talks in our neighborhood on gardening and problems. Our plan with the Master Gardener Association is to keep promoting the class and educating as many people as we can about the program. We want to continue the friendships we have made by taking the class. It is very good to have friends with similar interests and wants.

Our passion in gardening is landscaping. We love perennials, native plants, trees and design. Then there is the thing with hostas, we have not met a hosta that we don’t want to rescue.

We continue to pass on to anyone who wants to know tricks and things we have learned from the program or our friends. I will probably get thrown out of a store one day for telling people what is good or bad about a product they are looking at. We just want people to learn that garden-ing is fun and rewarding, not work.

Our property has been certified as a natural wildlife habitat. We current-ly have many perennials, trees, hos-tas and ground cover. We have a creek that runs through the back of our yard and the way we designed and laid out our flower beds we can see some beauty out all of our win-dows. We have a lot of rock and stone hardscape and a fire pit in the back yard where we truly love to enjoy the fruits of our work and have a good drink. We have bird feeders and blue bird nesting boxes along with humming bird feeders. So with that we have a lot of birds to

see. At dusk the bats love to entertain us at the fire pit.

We have two daughters and they are not into gardening yet because of the fun of kids and fam-ily. They are both married and we have four grand children and one great grandchild.

We are retired. Terry was in the Air force for 8 years. Then had a 36 year career with United Airlines. We took the Master Gardener class in 2001 and Terry retired in 2002.

Our interests outside of gardening are getting together with family and friends, playing cards, relaxing with a good drink by the fire, reading a good book and just enjoying life.

No Sugar Green Tomato Relish Makes about 3 pints Recipe may be doubled; increase cooking time by 10-15 minutes

2 lb. green tomatoes, cored and chopped 1 lb. white or yellow onions, chopped 3/4 lb. sweet red peppers, cored and chopped 1/2 lb. tart cooking apples, such as Granny Smith, cored and chopped 6 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 cup 5% acidic organic raw apple cider vinegar (or less, see note below)* 1 Tablespoon kosher or sea salt 4 jalapeno peppers, cored, seeded if desired, and finely chopped 2 Tablespoons chopped cilantro 1 teaspoon ground cumin (optional) Combine the tomatoes, onions, peppers, apples, garlic, vinegar, and salt in a large, nonreactive pot and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about an hour. Stir in the jalapenos, cilantro, and cumin and simmer for 5 more minutes. Carefully purée the mixture using a stick immersion blender, in batches if necessary, until still somewhat chunky. Don't over mix; you don't want it smooth. If canning, return the puréed relish to a boil, then ladle the hot mixture into hot jars, leaving 1/4-inch head space. Process 15 minutes in a boiling water canner. Store in a cool, dark place. 10 calories, 0g fat, 60mg sodium, 0g fiber, per Tablespoon * October 2009 Update: Since I originally posted this recipe four years ago, many of you written to let me know how much you love it (thank you!), but a couple of people have told me that their green tomato relish ended up tasting much too strongly of vinegar. The 1 cup of apple cider vinegar called for is to ensure that this is safe for water-bath canning (green tomatoes are acidic, but the other vegetables lower the overall acidity—1 cup is plenty), but if you're planning to store yours in the fridge—where it will keep for several weeks without processing—and are concerned it might be too much vinegar for your taste, you can safely decrease the amount of apple cider vinegar to 1/2 cup, or even less. If you want to give jars of green tomato relish as a gift without having to process them, just make sure the recipients put the jars directly into their refrigerator.
