WINCHMORE W E E K L Y THURSDAY 11 JUNE 2020 NEW YEAR 7 EDITION Dear Students, Parents and Carers, I hope you and your families are safe and well. This is very a special edition of the ‘Winchmore Weekly’, because I want to extend our weekly newsletter to our new Year 7 students who will be joining us in September. We have included some articles from previous issues. I am writing this letter on behalf of all our Winchmore staff and students, to all those students currently in Year 6, who will become our new Year 7 from September. Starting a new school can be an unsettling time for anybody, but starting during these unusual times can be particularly unsettling. Let me start by reassuring all our students old and new. Please do not be anxious or nervous, particularly as we start, or return to school for the new school year. We are here to help you, and believe me there’s lots of help and support available. If you will be a new Year 7 student, it is a huge pleasure for me to welcome you. Let me assure you that we will do everything possible to give you the best start at Winchmore, so that you can settle into your new school feeling safe, happy and able to enjoy learning and all the activities on offer in and out of the classroom. When you join Winchmore, you will be part of a tutor group. Your tutor will be there to help you find your feet, and settle in. Your tutor will be there to answer any questions you may have, or help you if you are worried about anything. Your tutor will be supported by Ms De Souza who will be your Head of Year 7. Ms De Souza is a very experienced Head of Year and is looking forward to meeting you and your family. I know you and your parents/carers will have lots of questions for us. In two weeks’ time (22nd June) we will be sending you, a Winchmore School starter pack. The starter pack will include two booklets which will give you lots of information about what it is like to be a student at Winchmore. In the following week (29th June) we will then be providing your parents/carers with a link so that they can e-mail any questions, they, or you may have for us. If you do have questions, ask your parents to pass them on to us. Normally, at this time of the year we would be inviting you to a special taster or induction day so you can meet teachers and have a tour of the school. You may also carry out some classroom activities and finish the day with a free ‘fish and chips’ lunch! Sadly, we won’t be able to do this, this term, however, we are talking about doing something similar in the new school year. One thing I can promise you, is that you won’t miss out on your free ‘fish and chips’ school lunch! In the coming weeks Ms De Souza will be letting you and your parents know how we are going to prepare you for starting at Winchmore School. Of course, you can always visit the web-site and check-out the virtual tour which will give you some idea of what Winchmore School has to offer.

WINCHMORE WEEKLYModel Theatre Set Design Competition

Some of you will have already completed this task as homework If you have you can submit pictures of your creation to the competition as well We are looking for the most creative and unique shoe box theatre designs

You can create a model theatre from items you find at home Itrsquos really simple all you need is a cereal box or an old shoe box You could even do a miniature one with a box from a packet of biscuits or popcorn Your design can be based on your favourite play or you could also choose to base it on your favourite book TV show or film Choose one setting within this and design a set as if the story was being performed on stage

Sketch your ideas out first This will help you understand what you want your scene to look like and what materials you need to gather

What do I need

You will need just 5 items to get started1 A box ndash a cereal box a medium or large rectangular square box2 Sellotape or glue3 Scissors4 A ruler5 A pen or pencil

Step by step guide ndash creating a base from a cereal box

STEP 1 - If you have a cereal box turn it on its side and cut out one of the larger sides and put to one side

STEP 2 - Sellotape the sides so that the original openings are secure You should tape the outside flat and inside flaps

STEP 3 - Take the cut-out section and place it onto the box to create a stage floor with the plain side facing upwards

STEP 4 - Secure the stage floor in place with sellotape

Step by step guide - Creating simple levels

You can do this with items you have at home Items you can use to create levels in your theatre

bull Childrenrsquos blocksbull Matchboxesbull Wrap books in white paper to create the effect of a raise platform

Step by step guide ndash Dressing your set

You can do this simply by using drawings and using house hold items to make them stand up

In my set design I have decided to create a scene from my favourite play DNA by Dennis Kelly I have used split staging to have three locations on stage at any given point ndash a wood a street and a field

See details of how each section was created below

The WoodTree In my DNA scene I want one large tree to set the scene of the wood I will have this downstage centre on the raised platform I have decided to cut this out of paper and stick it to the back of my box set

Woodland floorDuring my one walk of the day I picked up a small piece of fir tree and cut it into smaller pieces to create a naturalistic woodland effect on the floor of my stage

The StreetBench I have used two stage blocks (made from childrenrsquos toy blocks) placed upstage left Itrsquos as simple as that I will use light to compliment this further down the line

The FieldGrass For this I would like artificial Astroturf for my set but this is not something that I have hanging around the home So to improvise I have simply used a piece of paper and coloured it in to make it look like grass

The FieldGrass For this I would like artificial Astroturf for my set but this is not something that I have hanging around the home So to improvise I have simply used a piece of paper and coloured it in to make it look like grass

bull You can black-out the stage walls and floor to make it look more like an authentic black-box theatre Alternatively you could even make the floor of the stage a wooden floor (this is very common in proscenium arch theatres)

bull You could create a proscenium arch around your stage

bull You could experiment with where the audience would sit This set up could work as either Thrust staging or End-on
