DRALIONBy Cirque du SoleilNov 28 – Dec 2, 2012
Dralion is a signature Cirque du Soleil production acclaimed by more than seven million people worldwide since it premiered in 1999 in Montreal, Canada. After many years perform-ing under the big top, Dralion will now be presented at US Airways Arena and in arenas throughout the United States and Canada, with the same quality performance.
Fusing the 3,000 year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dralion draws its inspira-tion from Eastern philosophy and its never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature. The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West.
In Dralion, the four elements that govern the natural order take on a human form. Thus, embodied, each element is represented by its own evocative color: air is blue; water is green; fire is red; earth is ochre. In the world of Dralion, cultures blend, Man and Nature are one, and bal-ance is achieved.
Bearing the unmistakable signature of Cirque du Soleil and featuring 50 international acrobats, gymnasts, musicians and singers, Dralion soars to new heights as it defies the laws of nature.
Tickets are available through www.Cirquedusoleil.com. Show dates are Nov 28 to Dec 2.

Reviewers’ Roundtable
The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.
‘Beauty is Embarrassing’
Filmmaker Neil Berkeley chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of commercial artist Wayne White who, as one of the creative forces behind “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” has struggled to find peace and balance between his work and his art. (NR – 92 minutes)
Stan: Stimulating my own filmmaker’s imagination, filmmaker Neil Berkeley through his live portrait of artist Wayne White, reminds all of us no matter what our chosen life path may be, to be true to our inner most convictions. Reminded of a film school statement, a movie should entertain, enlighten, educate, or inform, ‘Beauty is Embarrassing’aptly fulfills all of the above, including my new interest in Wayne White’s ‘Word Art’ andcertainly not the WordArt that’s a tool in Microsoft PowerPoint!(Grade: B)
Joseph: “Beauty is Embarrassing” is not so much a documentary about commercial artist Wayne White as it is a one about how the determination to exercise one’s creativity is the secret to success when it comes to living the happiest life possible. Granted, filmmaker Neil Berkeley also reveals that said determination can pose a few problems when it comes to the more socially acceptable measures of success, but that is where priorities come into play. As such, it is an inspiring celebration of the imagination, which White has demonstrated himself to have via his various projects like the spectacular “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.” (Grade: B)
‘Fat Kid Rules the World’
Jacob Wysocki plays an overweight teen with no friends who put his planned suicide on hold after he is taken under the wing of an older yet unstable punk rocker (Matt O’Leary). (R – 94 minutes)
Joseph: One would think that the focus of a film titled “Fat Kid Rules the World” would be the overweight character. Unfortunately, one would be wrong – at least when it comes
to Matthew Lillard’s feature-length directorial debut. The new dramedy should be admired for its honesty and sincerity – especially during the nearly dialogue-free scenes that afford audiences an opportunity to see inside of its plump protagonist’s mind. However, said protagonist is eventually booted into the backseat to make room for the less-compelling character. And as if that were not bad enough, the tone is all over the place. (Grade: D)
‘The House I Live In’
Filmmaker Eugene Jarecki examines the war on drugs, exploring the risks that prohibition poses to freedom and the tragedy of addicts being treated as criminals. (NR – 108 minutes)
Stan: Barely scratching the surface of the decades old so called ‘war’, Eugene Jareckireminds us of the dichotomy between the mindset of addicts as criminals to be prosecuted or being sick with a cure being the solution. “The House I Live In” serves as that reminder for us to look into our hearts for the answer to the question: If we were the addict, how would we hope to be treated… (Grade: C+)

‘The Other Son’
Two young men – one Israeli (Jules Sitruk), the other Palestinian (Medhi Dehbi) – discover they were accidentally switched at birth and face complex repercussions with their respective families as a result. (PG-13 – 105 minutes)
Joseph: “The Other Son” is an exceptional drama that is executed
with mediocrity. The new French import from writer/director Lorraine Levy features some fine performances and introduces some interesting ideas but both the technical filmmaking aspects of it all and the resolutions at which it arrives are underwhelming. It almost appears as though Levy did not believe enough in her project to put forth the effort to afford audiences a grand cinematic experience that comes across as significant. Instead, the experience feels miniscule and shallow, with Levy never reaching more than a comfortable arm’s length for its conclusions. (Grade: D)
‘Skyfall’
Daniel Craig reprises his role of James Bond, whose loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat – no matter how personal the cost. (PG-13 – 143 minutes)
Stan: As a ‘boomer’ growing up with James Bond and Sean Connery as
Joseph: Although it is merely a brief introduction to a much larger subject, “The House I Live In” jump-starts the controversial conversation – deserving our admiration for that reason alone. Filmmaker Eugene Jarecki does a decent job of demonstrating that there may be much more to the story than simply saying that there are good guys and bad guys. He could have improved upon his project and helped an even greater number of people had he opened the topic up a bit more to include other criminal activities that render offenders as essentially disposable entities but change has to start somewhere. (Grade: C)
‘Keep the Lights On’
Thus Lindhardt plays a documentary filmmaker who meets a handsome
but closeted lawyer (Zachary Booth). As the two men start building a home and life together, each continues to privately battle their own compulsions and addictions. (NR – 101 minutes)
Joseph: Though it is engaging thanks to its complex story and solid performances, “Keep the Lights On” ultimately suffers in both its ability to keep viewers awake and its capacity for any real insight about its subjects thanks to an unbalanced representation of its characters. That is to say that co-writer/director Ira Sachs focuses on Thus Lindhardt’s character while essentially shoving Zachary Booth’s character to the back-burner to be used as a tool rather than someone who could have been equally fleshed-out thereby solving a pacing problem and developing additional hypotheses about the role that addiction plays in gay relationships. (Grade: D)
‘A Late Quartet’*
Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener and Mark Ivanir play four musicians who are bound together by their passion for music and long years of working together. But when one of them is diagnosed with a terminal illness, the repercussions hit the group deeper than they could imagine. (R – 105 minutes)

my Bond favorite, reading all of the original Ian Fleming books while in high school, and growing over the last 50 years as the various ‘Men Who Would Be Bond’, a tease for my three part special, were presented, this third installment with Daniel Craig as Bond works. Director Sam
Mendes presents the basics of the story, thrilling action sequences, and the ultimate surprise as new actors are installed as key characters for this next generation of Bond moviegoers. (Grade: B)
Joseph: If 2006’s “Casino Royale” was not enough to turn non-Bond fans into believers, then “Skyfall” will certainly do the trick. The latest installment in the now-50-year-old 007 film franchise is by far the best, both appealing to viewers who have never been quite compelled enough to jump on board the James Bond bandwagon while satisfying fans who have essentially grown up going on missions with the MI6 agent. By simplifying the story, amplifying the action and reducing the romantic trysts, “American Beauty” director Sam Mendes proves that it is definitely possible to teach old spies some new tricks. (Grade: B)
Soundbite Spotlight
The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released or about to be released in theaters.
Filmmaker Eugene Jarecki (‘The House I Live In’)
By Joseph J. Airdo
“There is extraordinary destruction that is unleashed on poor people across this country because it is ultimately driven by a grave misunderstanding about drug addiction. We treat the nonviolent in this country very often more severely than the violent. A drug-addicted person is like anyone we know. And how many people do we all know who are addicted to something, who is struggling with something?
“Instead of finding a way to help that person through that struggle so that they become a constructive citizen and continue to participate increasingly in the life of the country, we throw the book at them, lock them up and throw away the key. By doing so, we take a hurt person and make them a hopeless person because you gravely deepen the problem that they are already having.
“Of course, once you are put in jail and not offered treatment, your addiction does not go away but your life chances become much slimmer. Now, all of the forces of despair that feed addiction are accentuated. You now have more trouble getting a job and you now have more need for self-medication. So by meeting drug addiction in the wrong way, the system turns that addiction into a viscous cycle. That was probably my biggest discovery.” – Eugene Jarecki
Producer Barbara Broccoli (‘Skyfall’)
By Joseph J. Airdo
“The pressure was really on with ‘Skyfall’ because it is the 50th anniversary [of the James Bond brand] and it is more important than ever to us that we make a film that
honors all that has come before and celebrates all of the extraordinary achievements of everyone who has ever contributed to these films.
“We really wanted to make it the best Bond film ever and I think that [director Sam Mendes] has done an amazing job. We have a great story and an amazing cast. I am very proud of this film and really hope that audiences love watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.
“These films are so big and challenging, every day you are thrown a curve ball of some description. But that is great. My father always used to say, ‘As a producer, you need to hire the best people and then create an environment in which those people can do their best work.’ That is always at the forefront of my mind.
“We have got not only the most extraordinary cast but also the most extraordinary [production people] on this. Everyone who contributed to this film is a legend in their own right and just to be able to absorb them and their talents has been so rewarding. I think that the film is outstanding because of that.
“These films are so very important to so many people. I have met so many

For many of them, it was kind of family experience or a rite of passage being taken to these films by their parents or going on their first date – taking their girlfriend who became their wife. So many people have emotional feelings toward the series.

The original team set a new standard and created a whole new genre when they made ‘Dr. No.’ We stand on tall shoulders and do not want to disappoint the audience. We want to make these films as good as they can be, as relevant for the time and as enjoyable as possible. That is the challenge and it has not changed over the years.” – Barbara Broccoli

Remember college? Me neither. This is partially due to the fact that roommates, neighbors and near-strangers would congregate around the apartment complex every weekend for the sole purpose of seeing who would get a Sharpie drawn on their face first or what unfortunate soul would be awakened by a handful of flour to the face. But, I like to think, we’ve matured since then. Our tastes have become refined. And those of us with remaining brain cells appreciate some sensory and intellectual stimulation.
That’s why I propose that you throw a blind wine tasting party, attempting sensory Sudoku with coworkers and relatives. For this you’ll need everyone to bring a bottle of wine, divvying up the gamut: something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. And be sure that you place each wine in a paper bag, not only for aesthetic pleasure, but also to conceal the identity of the wine. Number each bag. Drink.
Compare your opinions. Can you really tell which is expensive and which is better suited for cleaning oil stains off of the driveway? Recent research says that you probably can’t; a study conducted on over 1,000 participants concluded that
consumers could not tell a cheap from an expensive wine outside the margin of error. In other words, they did no better than if they had guessed. But this sample was a population of science fair attendees, most likely attempting to ward off migraine-inducing laser lights, CO2 and mirrors.
For your next blind tasting party, be sure to include a Grand Canyon Winery selection. They’re something new. Also, let me know if you find anything blue.

Harvest TimeBy Marlene P. Baumann
Recently, I wrote about the basics of the harvest season: pick the grapes, process and crush them, and let the fer-mentation begin.
Often not talked about is the meticulous laboratory work being performed by the winemaking team. In fact, many wine-makers have scientific backgrounds. On most winery tours, visitors never really see the lab – we are shown the barrels and bottles and of course the tasting rooms. But what about the beakers, pH meters and calibration equipment? The work that goes on in the lab this time of the year is fascinating and affects how the finished wine will taste.
The winemaking team must analyze sam-ples from the tanks while the grapes are actively fermenting. They do this numer-ous times throughout the day, every day for the duration of active fermentation. In the lab, the team keeps detailed logs on the changing aspects of the grapes. What are they looking for? In simple terms: sugar content, acidity, and pH levels. More specifically, they taste the juice for its flavor components—fruit and essences that spring forth while the grapes are bub-bling away.
This process reminds me of my great-grandmother standing over a huge pot of sauce on the stovetop, tasting it repeat-edly to determine if the tomatoes were too acidic, too sweet, or cooking away too quickly. Only she would know what adjustments to make—we just knew in the end we would enjoy a sauce that was perfectly balanced!
The winemaking team is also analyzing the alcohol content. If it is too high, it may block the completion of the fermentation resulting in highly-alcoholic wines.
People often tell me that many red wines taste the same to them and they wonder why that is. Part of the answer could be the wines have a high alcohol content, which makes it difficult to detect acidity, nice tannins and fruit aromas as easily as in balanced wines. Wines that are high in alcohol feel weighty and can numb your palate, taking away your ability to enjoy the flavors of the wine.
So you can see that making a fine, well-balanced and interesting wine requires a skilled winemaking team and a lot of diligence in the lab. As with much of life – there are no shortcuts! 2727

The Festival at The Farm celebrates the success of Arizona’s wineries
The Arizona Wine Growers Association will celebrate a year of rising national acclaim by raising a glass with the public on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at The Festival on the Farm.
Set amongst the pecan groves of Phoenix’s intimate The Farm at South Mountain, the fourth annual festival is a way to sample the best wine from across Arizona, all in one place. More than 30 local wineries are expected to attend, representing the growing regions from the Verde Valley in the north, Sonoita and Elgin in the south, and Willcox in southeastern Arizona. This is the most Arizona wineries that have ever been gathered in one location for a group tasting event!
The festival is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and is limited to 1000 guests. Tickets are $75 for the public (online and at the door) and $60 for AWGA members.
The festival will include:
●● Wine tasting from 31 participating Arizona wineries and a commemorative glass.
●● A picnic lunch prepared by The Farm Kitchen. There also will be tasty treats from other local Arizona favorites.
●● A high-energy live auction for great prizes.
●● Educational seminars including food and wine pairing with Chef LaPrad from Quiessence and Curt Dunham, winemaker from Lawrence Dunham Vineyards.
“Whether they are a novice or an aficionado, this is a can’t miss event for wine lovers to meet the folks behind the rising Arizona wine movement,” said Peggy Fiandaca, president of the Arizona Wine Growers Association. “Come sip the wine from our state’s beautiful wine regions all in one place, in one of the most wonderful settings Phoenix has to offer.”

Wine and the First Date
By Jennifer Manly, ArizonaVinesAndWines.com
Oh, the awkward first date. You know, the one you’re excited for but also have no idea what to expect, because we all have heard those disastrous stories. You ask yourself a million questions… What will they be like? What should I wear? What do I order? More importantly, what do I drink?! These questions come up on every date. Although I can’t tell you what to wear, I can tell you that the perfect drink for a first date is wine, of course!
Wine is great on a first date for many reasons. Reason one, you have many different options to choose from, depending on what you’re feeling. Maybe you’re feeling a little playful, so you order a sweet white - or maybe a little daring, and decide on a spicy
Tempranillo.Second reason, we all know wine pairs great with food and that when people enjoy their food, they are that much happier. Wouldn’t that help with that first date awkwardness? Plus, it makes for great conversation when you tell your date how much
you’re enjoying the restaurant you’re at.
Another reason for wine on a first date? It helps you to relax! Wine is known to help calm your nerves, take the edge off and help you breathe a little easier. Also, if you want to bond a little bit with your date, wine is a great drink of choice because it gives you the option to share a bottle. You can choose something that you both like (you can even impress your date with recommending a specific one) and it’s the perfect amount to share on a date (about five glasses).
So on your next first date order your favorite wine and watch the sparks fly; and even if it’s not with your date, it’ll at least be with that White Merlot in your hand.

Thanksgiving and BeerWithout question, one of the biggest holidays of the year for eating and drinking is Thanksgiving. Besides the obligatory list of things to be thankful for, the entire day is about eating, drinking and watching football. And it’s not just a standard meal…in some households;
dozens of dishes compete with each other for space on both the table and your plate. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, vegetables and so much more take the stage in a dance which has the sole purpose of getting you to loosen your belt and fall asleep in front of the television in the fourth quarter of the last game of the day. Sounds like quite the challenge for somebody wanting to pour the proper beer. Fortunately, there are options that will make it easy to make sure you and your guests have the best beer to pair with your meal. And, we are giving them to you early enough to make sure you have time to pick them up. If you are a guest at one of these dinners, go ahead and bring a few bottles for your host.
The first key is to not try to find one beer that is all things to all people. You probably won’t pull it off. Instead set up a sampling table somewhere in the vicinity of the dinner table and stock it
with a variety of beers to suit a variety of foods. Put out small glasses if you have them and encourage guests to sample the beers in four ounce servings so they can pair multiple beers with the meal. Try some all around good food beers, add in some beers that present a crossover opportunity for the wine drinker, pull out one or two outrageous beers that will be a treat for the adventurous members of your dining group, and top it all of with a couple of dessert and digestif beers. Don’t be concerned if there are those in your crowd that may claim to not like beer. Have some wine available for them, personally I prefer a Pinot Noir and a Riesling with the traditional turkey dinner, but expect them to gravitate towards the beer, just because it is different. If you really want to go all out, make up index cards for each beer with a description of the flavors to be expected.
The first beers to include are the classic food beers, beers that don’t take much
imagination to enjoy and pair well with a wide range of food. For these, I recommend staying on the maltier side, although you will need something with a little bit of hops to cut through the richer foods. So let’s go with these:
New Belgium 1554This is a darker beer based on an old Brussels recipe. It has a nice touch of sweetness to it but is easy drinking and pairs well with a large variety of food. Don’t let your guests shy away from the color of this beer. Dark is not a flavor.Victory Prima PilsA wonderful beer with plenty of carbonation to help cleanse the palate so each bite of your meal is as enjoyable as the first.
Sierra Nevada Pale AleThis is the beer with that little hop bite. It has a solid malt backbone to stand up to a

LEE’S LIQUID DINNER BY “KING” JAMES SWANN
Hello beer lovers and friends, this week let’s chat about Sonoran’s latest Chef Series Beer, Lee’s Liquid Dinner. As you may already know, Sonoran Brewing is known for collaborating with many of the valley’s top chefs to brew beers unique to the foods they love to create. Lee’s Liquid Dinner is no exception. Brewed with honey roasted parsnips, chestnuts, cranberries and orange peel, this English brown style ale has a real holiday feel. You truly get all of these flavours on your very first sip. The fruit hits you first, balancing the dark malt characteristics, then out come the nuts and honey. The complexities taken from that first taste are astounding. A lot of different ingredients and a lot of love. So much going on yet every nuance is quite noticeable and very distinct.
The mastermind behind this chef series brew, Lee Hilson - Executive Chef at the Royal Palms in Phoenix decided to take his love of the fall and winter seasons to a new high. The idea is a warm “celebration” ale that takes the “Meal In Itself” ideal to a new high. Now having said so, this little gem is still great for pairing with all the right holiday meals. Imagine a crispy roasted duck with fresh green beans, cranberry sauce and mash. Even better, how about fennel and rosemary spiced sausages smothered in with gravy and biscuits? Oh Heaven I’m at your door!
The perfect booze pairing? How about a snifter of warm brandy or an aged cognac with a cinnamon stick? I’m really working myself up here! Anyone up for dinner?
As always, keep sending those comments and questions to [email protected] and keep those holiday feelings close to your heart. It’s the giving season and we should all be thinking of our fellow man. Cheers!

variety of food, and has just enough hops to deal with the gravy.
Next, let’s look at something for the wine drinkers. Here we will go for something with a little more complexity that still will pair with different foods:
The Bruery Autumn MapleHow can you not include a beer that is actually made with yams? In addition to the yams, this Belgian Strong Dark Ale is brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. It will go great with dark meat, stuffing and, of course, yams.
Tripel KarmelietThis Belgian Tripel brewed with barley, wheat and oats has layers of flavor that will match just about any food you choose to serve. The fact that it was named, “The Best Ale in the World” at the World Beer Awards certainly doesn’t hurt.
Lost Abbey Red BarnI believe that saisons may be the best overall style in the world to pair with food and this offering from Lost Abbey certainly helps prove the point. It will pair with just about everything on the table and works great as an aperitif as well. For something different, try the slightly earthier Avant Garde from this brewery instead.
How about challenging your guests while still giving them a strong pairing experience? Don’t worry; I have suggestions for those as well.
Ballast Point Sculpin It’s a hop bomb to be sure, but still has a solid malt backbone and will work well with very rich foods, and if you serve blue cheese before or after the meal, it’s an incredible pairing.
Cantillon GueuzeTart and refreshing, use this as a palate cleanser for a multi-course meal. It’s perfect just before the main course is served. Cantillon has been tough to find in Arizona recently so any Gueuze will do.
Redstone Vanilla Bean Cinnamon Stick MeadMeads are beverages where the primary fermentable is honey. This particular one is named after the natural flavorings added. Try a Black Raspberry, Traditional Mountain Honey Wine or Juniper Mead as well. They are refreshing and a different flavor, especially good with lighter dishes.
Crispin The SaintThis hard apple cider fermented with Trappist Ale yeast and a hint of organic maple syrup is just right for a non-
traditional Thanksgiving dinner. While it pairs well with turkey it really stands out as a complement to a ham dinner.
And now for dessert, stay with rich beers the complement the flavors and the richness of the dessert:
Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, Left Hand Milk StoutAll three of these beers go great with desserts and the ingredients in the dish would determine which would be best. For a lighter creamy dessert, go with the White Chocolate Ale, since it’s a wheat beer, it may not stand up to incredibly rich desserts. The Vanilla Porter is perfect with dishes like Crème Brulee or Flan. A lot of pies, especially pecan and pumpkin will go well with this. Finally, chocolate or coffee based desserts (think tiramisu or mocha) deserve Milk Stout. The unfermented sugars along with the roastiness of the stout make it ideal for this situation.
Cherish Raspberry or Cherry LambicActually any traditionally made lambic will work great with fruit desserts or pies. The underlying tartness from these spontaneously fermented beers provides a nice counter-balance to the sweetness of the dessert. Try to avoid the artificially sweetened lambics out there as they tend to be a bit cloying especially with a sweet dessert.
North Coast Old RasputinPour it in a snifter and don’t worry about dessert, sit out on the patio and enjoy it. Old Stock Barleywine from North Coast is also a great stand-alone meal finisher.
So those are my recommendation for Thanksgiving dinner. I realize that not all of these are available everywhere, so be creative, look for options that mirror these. No matter what you choose to drink, make sure it goes well with your food. The ability of beer to enhance the dining experience is amazing and it certainly deserves its place at your table.
Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy!

Psychic Sylvia Browne’s 50th Anniversary Tour
Sunday, Dec. 2nd at Celebrity Theatre
New York Times best-selling author and world famous psychic Sylvia Browne returns to the Valley with her 50th Anniversary Tour set for 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 2nd at the intimate Celebrity Theatre. To say that Sylvia Browne has a cult following is like saying the late Steve Jobs used to run a little company called Apple. She shares her gift of knowledge and insight with a wealth of predictions for 2012 -- she says the world will not end on Dec. 12 of this year; the Mayans simply ran out of “ink” -- and consults those who want to believe that we are not alone in the universe and that we all have had previous lives. Browne has been doing this for such a long time that you have to admire the public’s fascination with the former Catholic school teacher who has been interviewed by everyone from Larry King to Montel Williams. Browne has a new book out, “Afterlives of the Rich and Famous,” a New York Times bestseller (and one of 60-plus she has written) that reads like a who’s who of celebrity,
chronicling what life is like for the famous who are now living on the other side. (By the way, Sylvia does not believe in Hell, rather, those who have led evil lives reincarnate right back into the world and never get a chance to experience the heavenly aspects of the other side. Also, she notes in her lectures that living on earth is the “hell” that exists.) As for the book, she says that celebrities and other famous people are living great lives in Heaven. Through books, lectures and her active website, SylviaBrowne.com, the 76-year-old spiritual teacher and psychic wants people to know there is more to life than the one you’re living. Part lecture, comedy routine and some homespun advice, Browne’s talks typically grip her audience and keep them on the edge of their seats. Doors open at 4 p.m. Tickets ($55; and $245, which includes Meet and Greet with one question before show) are available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located just 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

The voice at the other end of the line is unmistakable: garrulous, formed by decades of cigarettes, whiskey, drugs and singing.
Half an hour later another unmistakable voice is on the line. This one is silkier, a bit of a posh accent, and the debauched living isn’t audible.
In separate conversations with Zap2it, Keith Richards, then Mick Jagger talk about their half-century – yes, 50 years – with the Rolling Stones, as featured in HBO’s “Crossfire Hurricane” Thursday, Nov. 15.
It would be impossible to capture what the quintessential rock band means in a single documentary, and this tries in just under two hours. The result is uneven. It has some excellent concert footage and reminders of how the world has evolved over the years.
Initially, the Rolling Stones were threatening; the Beatles were the darlings, and the Stones were the bad boys. The footage of hostile newscasters alone makes this fun, as stiff, disapproving middle-aged men of the 1960s pretty much castigated these young men.
And they were so very young when they shot to stardom, and Jagger looks like such a baby in the early days. This film is more like home movies – which are fun – than an objective or probing documentary. That makes sense considering Jagger and Richards are among the producers.
While rehearsing in Paris before setting off on tour, Richards and Jagger answer our questions.
Q: How do you describe the film?Jagger: It is irreverent enough. In the beginning I said to Brett
(Morgen, the director), “It is not supposed to be reverent.” I think in the end, the film does turn out to be an irreverent look at the band.
Q: Half a century is rather remarkable for anything. Does it feel so long when you are with the band?
Richards: I look around and see all the old faces, and then it all falls into place. This band is kind of strange. It has its own magnetic, chemical reactions, and once we are together and playing there is this satisfaction. Satisfaction! (He laughs at his unintended reference to one of the band’s signature songs.) You are doing what you are supposed to be doing any time I am playing with the Stones.

Freelance Whales Deliver Dreamy Diluvia, Captain Midnite Brings Northwest
Hip-Hop to the World By Brian Palmer
Three years after the success of their debut, Weathervanes, indie pop rockers Freelance Whales are back with their follow-up, Diluvia, and it is a treat. “Locked Out” typifies the album’s content and feel, with an upbeat baroque pop sound featuring horns, xylophone and the sort
of swelling, echoing verses you can’t get out of your head. Lead singer Judah Dadone mimics Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard throughout, especially on the engaging pop opener “Aeolus.” Bassist Doris Cellar gets in on the fun on tracks like “Spitting Image,” and when the two of them sing back and forth to each other on dreamy numbers like “Red Star” and “Winter Seeds,” it is hard not to get caught up in their hypnotic sway. More layered and nuanced than Weathervanes, Diluvia is a solid record.
With the release of his latest EP, All This Will Fade, Captain Midnite is out to prove that Seattle knows how to do more than just rock. The hip-hop track “Bullet Through Your Heart (ft. Slow Dance)” dances right up to the edge of dubstep without going over, while “As You Fall…(The 3 stages)” mixes plodding beats with waves of synths that wash over you. The seedy quality of “Sugar” makes you wonder if you should be grinding to this slow jam or looking over your shoulder for a knife-wielding psychopath, and “Drown Me Out” has a “Faint”-like quality to it during the choruses. Captain Midnite gives solid vocals throughout, opting for echoing, somewhat ethereal performances. This album is an intriguing hip-hop/alternative hybrid.

CRUSH!!!!TOP TEN HEAVY HITTERS
IN NFL HISTORY
#5 John LynchThis 6’ 2” 220 lb. hard-hitting DB out of Stanford University was selected in the third round of the 1993 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and enjoyed a stellar 15 year career. As an integral member of the league’s number one ranked defense in 2002, he celebrated a victory with the Bucs against the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. Playing with reckless abandon all over the field, Lynch always seemed to make the highlight reel following each week’s game. Despite his aggressive style of play, Lynch was surprisingly durable, missing only but a few games during his career due to injury. Lynch was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and earned all-pro honors on four occasions.
