WUWO WUWO

WUWO gives you the lowdown on What’s up and What’s on within our intro section. Snip bits of news and cool places to check out...

Lady Alex is hostess of London’s hottest burlesque event called Wam Bam Club, held at the grand ‘Cafe De Paris’. The event is on each Saturday and WUWO would recommend it as a great fun night out for all.

We ask Lady Alex to explain the world of burlesque and why it makes her tick.

How would you describe the world of burlesque to our readers?Burlesque is a world of creative, strong sexy women and men who are ready to entertain, amuse and tease you. It’s fun, naughty and highly addictive.

How did you discover the burlesque scene?I’ve always been fascinated by burlesque on the silver screen. I love Bettie Page and the legend of Gypsy Rose Lee. It was only about 10 years ago when I went to my first burlesque performance. I was spellbound.

Could you explain the Wam Bam club to WUWO readers?Wam Bam club is hard to describe because it is an experience.

We have residence the lavish Cafe de Paris club in Piccadilly, a venue which radiates history and opulence. From the moment you first arrive you are instantly transported to a bygone era of supper club glamour via my resident DJ, the Earl of Ealing, who DJs from gramophones. We have a glorious three course meal which is served whilst you enjoy a high octane show of dance. music, comedy, circus and lots of burlesque. The atmosphere is electric, the performances are superb and the dancing after the show pretty raucous.

Is the burlesque scene a lifestyle for you, do you live it day by day?I love it yes - and it does have an impact on your everyday life. Burlesque gives you tremendous awareness and confidence which is amazing.

I love wearing a nice pair of heels and some red lipstick on a Monday morning whilst doing my supermarket shop.

Multi-platinum singer and songwriter Jason Derulo suffered an injury to his neck in January, and has been forced to cancel all touring and promotional activities.

The 22 year old Miami native injured himself while training for his upcoming World Tour in support of his current album Future History, which was scheduled to commence in Glasgow

on February 23rd. While executing an acrobatic move, Derulo landed directly on his head, and suffered an acute fracture to his vertebra. After being rushed to Hospital in Miami he was told by doctors that the accident could have left him paralyzed.

Derulo has been released from the hospital but must wear a neck brace for the next few months.

Valentine’s day 14th Feb

I bet you’re a perfect, creative and poetic soul, who will not have any trouble coming up with your Valentines day message for your loved one (or loved two or three).

But if you don’t have time for any of that, check out the websites below to help you get ahead in the Valentine’s game. Copy the soppy poems, edit slightly and receive your brownie points.

We at WUWO found out that on Valentines day there are 50 million roses bought and 73% of the roses bought are by men. So we think the tables should turn this year and our lovely female readers should buy more roses for their beautiful boys!

Planking is an activity that has crazed the world. Lying down face first in the most unusual and sometimes most embarrassing places possible, then getting your mates to take a photo of you being a Plank. For example in the middle of a busy shopping centre or in the centre of a football pitch (when the game is in full swing of course). These kind of activities as stupid as they might sound are incredibly funny (if done

safely and not causing any danger). Some Planking TroubleThe game has even made headlines when seven doctors and nurses were suspended for having a bit of planking fun at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon. Also man from Australia was charged for allegedly planking on a police vehicle. You can check out loads of cool planks at planking.me

Tebowing is now the new craze to take over - spawning from the USA Tebowing is the art of ‘getting down on a knee and starting to pray’ even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different.Check out tebowing.com for more Tebowing action.

Total Recall the Sci-fi film of 1990, that starred (Cheeky) Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is being remade. It stars Colin Farrell . The story promises to follow a different direction from the original, this is one film that WUWO can’t wait to see! But hold your horses - UK Cinema release is 22nd August 2012.

For those of us who don’t know, Spotify is a digital

music service that allows you to listen to virtually any music for free. All you do is make an account, pay a fiver to avoid all the ads, and listen to your favourite artists on repeat! It’s a great way of expanding your musical tastes and sharing music with your friends.

The future of Spotify is exciting because it may also include film!

Imagine being able to stream any film, any time, with only one payment a month. It has been reported that Spotify is trying to make deals with major movie companies to make this a reality.

Such a service will also help with curbing the increasing illegal downloads by encouraging users to turn to services like Spotify, which pay for themselves with adverts and small subscription fees. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears tuned!

Stealth, strategy and something electric This new addition of Assassin’s Creed sets the benchmark – not in the lousy ‘Modern Warfare’ way, where you get two previous games merged into one, but a game that feels revitalised.

Assassin’s Creed feels vibrant; our assassin, Ezio Auditore, is all the more skilled, despite being older. Finally discover the truth behind his quest and the purpose behind his ravishing anger.

Needless to say, the graphics are spell-binding. The new multiplayer additions will also keep you occupied.

Overall an addictive game that goes well beyond its predecessor and reminds us what real honour is, the sword and shield way – not that he even needs one.

Unfortunately this is not a new Apple initiative that eradicates fatigue! It is the emotion that I think will soon dominate us iFreaks. Let’s face it, we all have our eyes (secretly or not secretly) feasted upon a succulent white iPhone or iPad or iPod. What is it about that white Apple that lures us to dig deep into our pockets?

I foresee Apple’s reign soon coming to an end. It might take a year, maybe two, but the competition is catching up and some of us are starting to get bored. You have Google’s Android constantly developing and adding features like facial recognition or the new Windows 8 phone taking computer portability to the next level.

Don’t get me wrong – competition is healthy because it keeps these companies at their very best. The problem is, we are so dazzled by the i and the white Apple, we often miss these new inventions!

Tweet me your thoughts@whatsupwhatson

The other day I was on a train from Victoria to Earls Court – no, this is not my life story – and in true British travel tradition, there were delays… I stood, invading the personal space of fellow travellers, swamped in a sea of BO and an overwhelming sense of boredom.

So, to get rid of this crushing inactivity that reminds us that every second that goes by is a second that we’ve aged, I’ve listed a few free apps that should ensure an easy passage of time or perhaps prolong your torment! Hey, don’t blame me if you’re psychologically photographing adverts instead of...hangman or navigating a helicopter free from green obstacles.

Kindle WAIT! Do not read the following article...I was just checking that would work, because I know 9/10 people are reading this statistic right now! Before you flick over, give the Kindle a chance and hear me out.

I received my Kindle a few days ago, delivered in a fat box of wasted cardboard (ironic, since it was sent by ‘Amazon’). It was so light, I thought those Amazonian’s (in their plush green forest) had forgotten to put my Kindle in the box! As I cradled my new toy, I soon realised that the E Ink display was perfect for reading, unlike the iPad with its glossy finish. I have to admit, I was still sceptical, black and white displays were part of the forgotten Nokia age. What use would it be to me? It felt like I was going backwards, but in my opinion, the Kindle leads the race so far as E-book readers go.

I know what you’re thinking – Amazon has paid me to do this. I can confirm that they haven’t. I can also tell you that the Kindle was not something I was keen on. But, if you enjoy a variety of literature and access to numerous classics for FREE, then look no further. In the few days that I have had the Kindle, I have not had to charge it or hook it up once to the computer (and I have over 50 books already!) – it’s incredible and completely wireless.

After being named on the BBC’s Sound of 2012 Long List, successful appearances on the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds festivals, a debut album on the way and a slot opening for Florence and the Machine on their upcoming tour, Spector have every reason to be optimistic about the future. WUWO chatted to singer Fred Macpherson about keyboards, dance moves and the exciting months ahead for the band.

It’s said that the band started with you sat in your bedroom writing songs on an old Casio keyboard, is that true?

It is true and not much has changed, I’m sat in that room now. You can have all the most expensive equipment in the world and all the most virtuoso players and it wouldn’t actually help you write a song. The hard thing about writing a song is that you’ve got to get something from literally nothing. One of the first songs I wrote was “Never Fade Away”, our first single, and I was just playing on one finger. You have to dig deep and into a place that sometimes quite hard to get to. It’s like going around Tesco and trying to remember what you need to buy.

What kind of keyboard was it, like a “my first Casio” or something more grown up?

I actually bought it at a car boot sale near Clapham. I was on my way out and saw this keyboard and said “how much is that?” and they said it was 4 quid and I thought ‘that’s cheap’. Then I picked it up and realised how heavy it was but I’d already paid for it so I got it on the tube, took it to my Mum’s house and turned it on and it sounded like ****.

Did it have any good voices?

It’s a Casiotone, it’s made of wood. It has about 12 voices all of which sound like the sound of a television being switched off but in key. I still use it when I need to challenge myself to write a song.

Having started out like that, do you have any advice for other bedroom songwriters apart from maybe “buy better equipment”?

My advice would be not to buy better equipment. My advice would be to write songs. Half the problem with the bedroom is half the time the bedroom people are just fiddling around with laptops getting good hi hat noises. If you’re making dance music hi hat noises matter but if you are a bedroom songwriter don’t forget to write songs for god’s sake!

The band’s songs tend to move around different styles. You have energetic, guitar led tracks like “Chevy Thunder” and also more electronic, melancholic songs like “Grey Shirt & Tie”, is song writing a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for you?

That’s exactly what it is. You find that when you’ve got a lot to say it’s easier to say when it’s fast because you can fit it all in and where there is less to say and you’ve just got a kind of feeling, then you slow it all down and let this single feeling float over the music. I think our album is going to be even more like that. The main thing is that we are a modern band and if you listen to Rihanna she’s got so many different styles or Beyoncé as well, I think if you are a pop artist it’s not like ‘oh why are you making songs in that style and then that style?’ We don’t see ourselves as a rock band that plays rock music. We see ourselves as a modern band that plays variations of the styles that we can do and I think our album will reflect that.

You’ve been labelled as things like “East London’s answer to the Strokes” and “Dalston’s Kaiser Chiefs”, do you find where the band has come from has conditioned you at all?

No, because the people in that area hate this music. If you talk to someone about The Strokes they think you are the most uncool person in the world because they only listen to hip hop or metal. We don’t live in Dalston; it became a quick association because it seems like a place that to the outside world has a ‘cool vibe’ to it. It’s weird, I do like the Strokes and we have hung out in Dalston and played shows there. The “Dalston Kaiser Chiefs” started as a **** take but has now kind of stuck. I wish we sounded like the Strokes but we don’t play guitar that well!

What is the latest on the album?

It’s good, it’s about 70% done. It’s all written and I’m really pleased with the songs. I want it to be short and sharp, the sort of album you can get to the end of on the tube and then want to listen to again. I think it’s going to be a light hearted, listenable record that has a lot of depth to it and hopefully fun enough to sing and dance along to but with some sad moments. I’ve got a good feeling about it, I like it, so even if the whole world thinks it’s **** I’ll be really happy to have made a CD I can listen to.

You’re heading out on a headline club tour in February before joining up with Florence and the Machine, are you excited for those shows?

I’m looking forward to both in different ways. It’s great when you play the headline shows and you know that if people have bought a ticket that they are there to see you but when you’re doing a big support tour you know there’s not a single person in the room who necessarily cares who you are. Some of those venues are not just bigger venues than we’ve ever played in but also bigger venues than we’ve ever been in! It’s like joining a business when you start out doing the photocopying and you’re trying to impress the Boss. Going on tour with Florence is going to be like a chance to impress the Boss and the club tour is going to be us improving our photocopying.

As a front man you have some pretty powerful moves, where do they come from?

They come from that moment when you sing to a crowd and think ‘**** is everyone really bored?’ I’ve got to do something to make people less bored. That’s what entertainment is, following that instinct to just do something or act in a different way because you don’t want to bore people. I don’t think my moves are very refined yet, I may need to remove them. I’ll see how they go down in front of more people. We just want to entertain. If I’m going to go to Las Vegas to see Barry Manilow I want to be entertained, I’d like Spector to bring out some of that Manilow Vegas magic even if it’s just a tiny touch.

Are the suits ever restrictive?

They can be, you sweat in them a lot! We feel comfortable in them. I’ve come off after gigs recently and people think I’ve spilt drinks on myself and I realise it’s just sweat. I have to take my suits into the dry cleaner and they say ‘what’s happened here? Looks like some proper damage has been done’ and I say ‘No, just Spector’ and they give me a knowing look.

Hypothetical Question: A member of the band turns up to a gig in jeans, are they allowed on stage?

If they were black jeans, that would be fine. I don’t think I could come to term with stonewash just yet. I think the look, like the music is something we’re going to keep playing with. It’s a fun thing to mess about with so I wouldn’t be surprised if we switch it up now and then.

Spector’s music could recently be heard in Eastenders, playing on Winston’s music stall in Albert Square! Who knew they had such good taste?

MUSIC MUSIC

We caught up with them at a recent gig in Kingston and after a heated debate (argument) and much (and I really do mean much) discussion and painstaking deliberation we can present the top 5 tracks (in no particular order) that grace the band’s van when they’re on the road:

Who are they? A pop/synth band that went on to develop a more rock sound as their career progressed. The most notable members were front men Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith.

When were they at their height? The band was at its best during the mid 80s with a string of top 20 singles.

Where do I start? Pick up the album “Songs From the Big Chair” which features some of the band’s best tracks including: “Everybody wants to Rule the World”, “Shout” and “Mother’s Talk”.

Where are they now? After a falling out between Orzabal and Smith the two parted company in 1991. However, in 2000 the pair reunited and released the album “Everybody Loves a Happy Ending”. Their most recent tour dates were with Spandau Ballet back in 2010 but things have been a bit quiet since then.

You may remember not too long ago there was an advert for Honda that, in summary, basically said “we’re Honda and we’re great.” There were some cars driving around, maybe a hot air balloon somewhere and a little robot man who pottered around like a cute incarnation of the super advanced terminators that will one day enslave us all. Sound tracking the whole things was an incredibly mashed up yet catchy track that tied the whole thing together.

The song in question is a 7 minute epic from New York based band Battles, who have been around since 2002. The song has been around the block a bit as, in addition to the Honda ad, “Atlas” has been featured in the games Little Big Planet and Major League Baseball 2k8 as well as appearing on the soundtrack for the second series of Skins. More recently the band have released their second album “Gloss Drop” which featured incredibly summery lead single “Ice Cream” and an excellent collaboration with Gary Numan called “My Machines”.

Check out more from the band here: bttls.com

Who? Singer and rapper best known as part of hip hop collective OFWGKTA

Where? From New Orleans, Louisiana

What? Smooth R’n’B

Why? In his relatively short career, Ocean has already written music for the likes of John Legend and Beyoncé as well as writing and performing with Jay Z and Kanye West on their ‘Watch the Throne’ album. His self-released mixtape “Nostalgia, Ultra” led to him being named in a number of album of the year lists and has also seen him named on the BBC sound of 2012 poll. With a new album imminent 2012 could be one hell of a year for Frank Ocean.

This month’s top whispers, nudges and winks concerning whose going to be on the bill at this summer’s biggest festivals:Kasabian are strongly rumoured to join Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at this year’s Hard Rock Calling. After releasing a string of European festival dates, The Cure are being talked about for LattitudeFoo Fighters recently dropped a hint that they would be up for playing Reading and Leeds this year.Katy Perry is rumoured to be appearing at T in the Park. The Stone Roses look set to be confirmed for V whilst Florence and the Machine looks a good bet to join them.

Each month WUWO dusts off a band from the ‘where are they now’ pile and sheds some light on what became of them after their time in the limelight. This month it is the turn of American soft rockers The Calling. With their biggest hit in 2001 “Wherever You Will Go”, still ringing in our ears from repeated Christmas viewings of Love Actually and the recent acoustic cover version, it seems as good a time as any to take a look at where the band have got to these past few years.

Unfortunately it is bad news for Calling fans as the band have been on “indefinite hiatus” for some time. The most recent post on the band’s website states “The Calling has been and will continue to be most important to us and we will be returning soon!” Given that this message was posted in 2005 it is clear that either band have a warped perception of what soon means OR The Calling have bitten the dust for good. However, it isn’t all bad news! The band leave behind two albums and a string of singles for you to discover and frontman Alex Band still tours (his most recent dates are a European tour throughout January this year) and presumably dips in to some of the Calling’s material during his show. He has an album of his own material called “We’ve All Been There” which was released in 2010.

Genesis- No Son of mineIt’s the best snare sound ever. We seem to have independently all grown up with the same album that we all loved. We never spoke about it until we played it in the van and everybody went oh my god this album’s amazing.

Queen and David Bowie - Under PressureIt’s just a great song. I think we listened to that about 8 times in a row last time, at least 4. It’s just brilliant, the build-up, the end and the crazy drums in the middle. It’s powerful with feeling, happy yet sad all at once, brilliant.

Rage Against the Machine - TestifyIt’s just an instant ‘on the road’ track. I’ve never met anybody who doesn’t like Rage Against The Machine.

Michael Jackson - Why Do You Want to Trip on MeThis is actually the best song ever. It’s just the ultimate. The most obscene snare drum sounds, we’re into songs with good snare sounds. We also really like that album, Dangerous is a bit of an underdog when it comes to MJ albums.

The Streets - Turn the Page“It reminds me of when we played Reading and got to see them on the same day we played. They’re a band we’re big fans of too.

To the left hand side of me, there’s a lady, with porcelain skin and rosy cheeks wearing a shin-length fur camel collared-coat and pearl earrings. To my right, there’s a man in a bowler hat, wearing a fitted pin striped suit, and sporting a black leather briefcase in his right hand.

Guess where I am? Nope, I’m not in West London; neither am I in Kensingtion and Chelsea. I’m in good, old, Dalston. The multicultural town is home to trendsetters and fashionistas. The Eastenders are a bit more fashion-forward than your average Londoner. I’ve only been here two minutes, and I’m sure I’ve seen five very eccentric looks already.

I’ve seen one girl with tomato-red hair, another with aqua-green lipstick, not forgetting, the one with ombre ‘dip dyed’ hair (that was platinum blonde at the top, and neon pink at the bottom), and what can only be described as the highest platform boots I’ve ever seen a male wear in my life!

WUWO fashion reporter Louise takes the streets of Dalston, London to spot the fashionistas.

COMPETITIONSCOMPETITIONS

The first generation of Skins characters established the show as a cult classic, cementing itself in the hearts of UK youth. Its conception was groundbreaking in its controversialist attitude- parents and politicians were up in arms about a programme that depicted the degenerative nature of teenagers who so fervently experimented with pills and promiscuity. Which is exactly why we loved it...

Mary-Clare O’Connor

The current bunch of Bristolian college students initially incited a furore of appreciation for a batch of likeable characters, but TV critics quickly turned against the storylines, and the series proved the least popular yet. So WUWO caught up with Laya Lewis who plays Liv to see whether Skins can once again win back our appreciation…

Hi Laya! You had to compete with two previous casts that were very popular. How do you think your generation has forged their own way away from the likes of Tony and Effie?I think that everything in this series is different from the previous two. From how we look, like the clothes and hair to how we talk. But I don’t see it as competing, more as moving forward. We all realised we had some big shoes to fill after the other two generations. But as it’s the same show I don’t think its competition, the show is just moving with the times and staying current.

Do you think that this series is any less popular than the previous two?It is less popular, yeah. I entered into it with a pinch of salt, but you know we came in at Series 5, so its bound to happen that shows get less popular after time.

How has the filming of this series been different from the last one you did?For the first half of last series I just remember feeling really nervous. For this series, we all knew each other and were already friends, which made it a lot easier.

Do you think that programmes like Skins portray an accurate representation of British youth culture? No its not a true representation. Its heightened and its extreme. I think the stuff that happens in Skins does occur though, but hopefully not all of it to one group of friends! But I don’t watch shows because they’re realistic, I watch them because they’re entertaining, and hopefully that’s why people watch the show.

What have you learnt after filming the last series that you have put into this one?Once you get used to a job you start to learn the ins and outs, it makes things a lot easier, and quicker too, scenes don’t take as long once when everyone is a bit more experienced.

Some people argue that programmes like Skins are a bad influence on impressionable youths. How would you argue against that?Stuff like drugs and sex was around long before Skins came along. Obviously it can have an influence on people and there is a lot of naughtiness. But there are also underlying messages. Liv sleeps with her best friend’s boyfriend, for example. Other girls might be in the same boat and be feeling alone, but Skins shows how you can come back from something like that.

So what TV shows or movies did you watch growing up? Has any particular famous person inspired you to go into your role in Skins?I really love 80s movies and actors from that era like Molly Ringwold. Her movies just make you feel good, I think Skins can be looked at like a modern day Breakfast Club in that way, its ultimately just a groups of kids having fun.

You and Liv; separated at birth or total opposites?I don’t have many similarities to Liv actually-only one or two. I think everyone can see from the show that Liv is quite moody, and she’s definitely a lot more moody than I am!

You have some pretty great man candy on the set with you- if you had to sleep with another cast member who would it be?God that is so wrong! They’re like my brothers, it’s incestuous!! God OK if I had to choose someone… Freya! [Mavor who plays Mini]. I’d sleep with Freya…

WUWO wasn’t entirely convinced that Laya isn’t harbouring a secret crush on one of the boys… Only time will tell whether the drama on set is more compelling than the drama on-screen! Skins, Mondays at 10pm on E4.

The characters were realistic and accessible; WUWO was heartbroken when Chris died in Series 2, and loved Effie’s antics in series 3 and 4. So where does the latest cast generation fit it?

Skins facts...

The US version of Skins was screened on MTV in 2011 but faced considerable controversy over the overt sexuality of the teens. Those Americans clearly have more delicate tastes than us Brits- the show crashed and burned after just one season.

Think you’ve seen her somewhere before? Dakota Blue Richards, who plays the newly feminised Franky in the current series previously starred alongside Nicole Kidman as Lyra Belacqua in the film The Golden Compass.

The main reason behind Skin’s huge success is amazingly the average age of the show’s writing team is just 21!1 2 3

WUWO are on the search for top rate eating experiences. We save you time by directing you to our hidden gems.

Coming out of Warren Street station London, heading north onto Hampstead Road, about two hundred yards from the junction with Euston Road you’ll find ‘Mestizo’ the Latin-American jewel that has been giving Londoners the authentic taste of Mexico since 2005.Some people may know that ‘Mestizo’ is a modern place where fine Mexican cuisine is served. But what not many know is that there is a red staircase accessed through a side door which opens late on Thursdays and that leads to a scarlet underground adventure. No one would imagine but right beneath the upmarket restaurant floor, a vibrant salsa explosion is taking over the cellar. Contemporary DJ’s and Latin music are played but the true magnets to ‘Downstairs at Mestizo’ are the fresh tacos served from as little as £1.

From cheese that melts in your mouth from the lovely quesadillas to the meaty marinated steak, there are plenty of choices and they are all prepared in front of you with corn tortillas, nothing like the ones you get in the shops. This is real Mexican street food ready to blow your mind away and it doesn’t end there. Corona beer is only £ 2.50 you can eat, drink and dance for under a tenner so what are you waiting for? There is no excuse, make this ‘Jueves Mexicano’ or Mexican Thursday, as this affair is called, the next appointment on your diary. Be prepared to have salsa for your lips and hips and to dance your night away.

Sunday morning, the light finds a gap between the curtains and hits you right in the eye. That is when the hangover doesn’t let you decide whether to get up or turn around to avoid the intrusive sunlight. Does this sound familiar?

Then there is only one place that can bring you back from dead zone. Chaotic, bursting with life and right in the heart of East London it’s the Sunday Upmarket, part of The Old Truman Brewery’s markets.

The food hall, where the fragrant smells from the entrance become ever stronger and the flavours materialise into dishes from all over the world, host an amazing variety of choice from the best Spanish gazpacho in town or if you are in for vegetarian, chick pea curries and falafels. As you carry on walking you are left to face tempting sushi rolls, followed by Caribbean tiger prawns and coconut milk curry.

When you have finished savouring bits of Morocco and Thailand why not head on to the Ethiopian coffee stall and then indulge yourself with one of the famous and greatly artistic cup cakes from Molly bakes, they are so famous that even Lady Gaga has tried them.

Get up and visit Sunday Upmarket and you will leave beaming with pleasure.

Some like it hot..some like it even hotter..when it comes to chillies no other pepper does it better for me than the JAMACIAN scotch bonnet peppers “YEAH MAN”!!!...full of flavour coupled with heat and pretty too. In fact it was given the Scovile Organoleptic test and scored somewhere in the region of 350.000 Scovile units. I use scotch bonnet peppers to flavour soups, stews, rice dishes, salads, condtiments and even drinks. Here is one of my favourite recipes guaranteed to make your lips tingle with delight and remember to wash it down with a rum and coconut water.

Belly pork1 kilogram of fresh pork belly15 cloves of garlic grated1 stem of ginger 1 table spoon of fresh thyme1 1/2 cup of red rum10 dashes of angustura bitters2 table spoon of olive oilsalt and fresh black pepper to taste4 scotch bonnet pepper chopped finely

Methodchop all of the ingredients in a food processor and massage into the pork belly..let it marinate for at least 2 hours then place the pork in a flat baking pan, preheat the oven to 250 degrees and cook for 1 hour, remove, allow to cool, cut into cubes and serve with my super jerkily pepper sauce.

Years ago cocktails where considered to be for women or the posh, thankfully that has now changed. Cocktails are so on topic at the moment that WUWO thought we should be introducing our cocktail of the month.

FOOD FOOD

For this month we have prepared the Orange Fizz, try it and leave your guest filling spicy.

Crush enough ice to fill ¾ of a glass, then with a lemon zester, grate a little bit of the orange zest and half the clove into the mixing glass, add the sugar, the pre-packed orange juice, the vodka and cinnamon stick, then squeeze 50 ml of natural juice out of the orange and add it to the mixing glass, add a little bit of ice and start mixing. Shake the mixing glass for 30 seconds, remove the cinnamon stick and then pour the liquid through a small sieve on to the crushed ice.

Finally add the soda water, run a slice of orange peel around the rim of the glass, decorate it with orange peel and sip up.

Round 1I joined in with the warm up for a Brazilian Ju Jitsu class whilst I waited for Jimi to arrive, I was mid roly-poly when he walked in. I shook off my dizziness, introduced myself and we got started straight away. We began with footwork, chasing each other round the ring, I felt silly at first but looking around I saw that no one was taking any notice of my stumbling, focusing instead on their opponent and the advice they were being given. After 3 rounds I was puffing, but starting to enjoy myself, and once Jimi bound my hands and I put on some boxing gloves (the smallest they could find) I felt like a pro. Once I had the rhythm of the ‘left jab, right, BIG HOOK’ - which took a while, my muscles were seriously starting to ache, but Jimi’s encouragement didn’t stop, knocking me about with the pads to keep up my guard before theatrically backing up against the cage so I could ‘finish him off!!’

Round 2Next we moved onto The Clinch, Jimi explained that this was his favorite part of the fight and where he’s at his best. Clasping the back of each other’s necks, Jimi showed me the most effective way to knee my opponent to cause maximum damage. At this point I asked whether Jimi ever felt guilty about

the damage he causes, to which he responded ‘no, the only thing stopping the other guy from killing you is the referee, you’ve just got to get there first’. Any self-conscious feelings I had were completely gone by now and I was grunting into my punches, something I did not see coming, and when Jimi suggested we try some wrestling moves I was totally ready, and the adrenaline was pumping.

Round 3For the grand finale Jimi asked one of the guys to come and grapple with me, Jimi was quite impressed when I managed a sneaky uppercut to my opponents jaw. By lunchtime the atmosphere in the gym was really sociable, with kids running round and fans taking pictures. It made me realise that this sport is not just for big men, but perfect for anyone wanting to get fit, meet new people and face a new challenge.

When I told my friends that I was having a training session with a mixed martial arts fighter, they laughed - a lot. I am 5.2ft and a have never been in a fight in my life, whereas Jimi Manuwa is a light heavyweight champion and undefeated BAMMA fighter at the top of his game. Needless to say when I arrived at Jimi’s gym ‘Lions Pride’ in Croydon early on a Saturday morning, I was pretty nervous.

Cheese-Rolling During the annual Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake, competitors race down a steep hill in

Gloucestershire, attempting to catch a Double Gloucester cheese which has been set rolling from the top, often resulting in injuries. The cheese has a one second head start and can reach speeds up to 112 km/hr, the first individual across the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins (the cheese of course).

Shin Kicking More generally demonstrated by angry toddlers, shin kicking originated in the 1600s as a way to protest against the

growth of Puritanism (don’t ask). In the modern sport competitors are permitted to cram as much hay down their trousers as possible before attempting to knock their opponent to the ground by kicking each other in the shin!

Wife carrying First introduced in Finland, wife carrying is an actual sport where male competitors race while carrying a female

teammate. The objective is for the male to carry the female through a special obstacle course in the fastest time. Major competitions are held in Sonkajarvi, Finland, Monona, Wisconsin and in Marquette, Michigan. Talk about tough love.

Forget the wall and those pesky Nazis today it’s a very different city throbbing to the beat of hard techno, a thriving cafe culture and some of the best architecture (check out the soaring Gothica of Alexanderplatz or the or the ultra postmodernism of Postdamerplatz) and museums in Europe. With a population of 3.4 million Berlin is Germany’s largest city and a melting pot of over 190 nationalities. It’s also a great place to walk off the night before with over a third of the city given over to parks, forests and lakes.

Forget the wall it’s 2012! Come for the beer and stay for the Techno. Partying like a local can see you kicking it till dawn with ease and sometimes into Monday morning if you have the stamina. Get yourself to Mitte where many historic buildings were taken over and squatted by an emerging acid house scene in the early 90s today some of Berlin’s best underground spots can still be found in this district such as E-Werk, UFO, TRESOR and of course Berghain with the infamous Panorama bar so called because it opens it blinds at Dawn to allow party-goers a sunrise view of the city after smashing it through the night.

Clubs are not required to close at a fixed time at the weekends so it’s really down to you when you see daylight!

Feeling naughty? Then check out the Easter fetish parade each year and relish in this liberal cities gay and lesbian culture with some of the most established gay clubs and festivals in Europe mostly found in and around the Schoenberg near the Nollendorfplatz.

Berlin has over 153 museums so if you are a culture vulture you could do far worse than Museum Island situated in the Northern part of the Spree Island between the Spree and the Kupfergraben. Check out the Egyptian Museum of Berlin or perhaps the Altes Museum with its ode to Greek architecture and dazzling antique collections.

The Berlin U-Bahn is one of the most sophisticated tube systems in Europe with 173 stations over 10 lines. Trains typically run out and into each station in 2-5 minute intervals daily. Using this system could not be easier and is guaranteed to get you around the city with minimum of fuss.

An example price would be a single ticket one way for € 2.30, this is open for two hours and can be used in two of the three available zones A, B and C.

Steeped in history but striding towards the future, bigger than Paris and up later than New York, a dark past with a bright new tomorrow. Fewer European cities evoke so such vivid distinctions as the German capital.

Whether you are venturing out on your gap year or taking some time off work, there are hundreds of guides telling you where to go and how to stay safe. I am going to tell you how to have FUN!

Making friends can make or break your trip, especially if you are travelling alone, which take it from me can be great! The most important thing is to keep an open mind, you must have something in common with the people you meet or you wouldn’t be in the same place. Staying in dorms is great, they may smell a bit funny and the sheets may look a bit suspicious, but everyone in them is up for a laugh, take a pack of cards and a bottle of vodka and you will fit right in!

If you have a special skill like juggling or sketching - show off...One guy I met from Brazil always carried round some special ‘Brazilian chocolate’ to make hot chocolate for any lonely looking ladies, and believe me he always had a great time!! Don’t be afraid to approach people for company, they probably feel just as nervous as you, and if not it’s because they have been traveling a while and can offer you great advice, everyone LOVES to talk about their experiences.

Jim Morrison

(8 December 1943 – 3 July 1971)

American singer, poet, songwriter, writer and film director.

Died in the bathtub of his Paris apartment. Under French law, no autopsy was performed because the

medical examiner claimed to have found no evidence of foul play. The cause of death was officially listed as “heart failure”. His girlfriend, Pamela Courson, gave numerous contradictory versions of his death. Courson died of a heroin overdose three years later, at the age of 27.

Joseph Merrick “The Elephant Man”

(5 August 1862 – 11 April 1890)

English sideshow performer and celebrity.

Probably died from the accidental dislocation of his neck while sleeping. The cause of his deformities is still unknown. Elephantiasis, Neurofibromatosis type I and Proteus syndrome have all been suggested. Because of his condition, Merrick was unemployable for most of his life. In 1884, he took a job as a sideshow performer, where he was treated decently and earned a considerable sum of money.
