H ave you ever seen those guys walking around selling

cigarettes and candy on the street while stuck in traffic? Only in the Philippines can you find cigarettes sold per stick at 4 pesos a pop, you can then buy a piece of gum or a mint to freshen your smoke-smelling breath for a peso too!

They’re called Tak Tak Boys.

They got the name from the sound they make by sliding their wooden compartments back and forth for attention, how awesome is that?!

TAK TO MEMEET THE TAK TAK BOYS

T HAT'S JUST GIBBERISH! Nope. This is an actual conversation, by the way. No, really. The Filipino language is quite

unique with their words and this is a perfect example. Here's how it goes:

Mr. Awesome: Bababa ba? = Is it (elevator) going down?

Mr. More Awesome: Bababa = it’s going down.

So it's basically a phrase you use or other people use if they want to ask if someone is going down(usually from the elevator). Pretty useful stuff the next time someone asks "Bababa? Ba", you know what to say!

TAGALOG TIME:

C ompassion runs through the blood of the Filipinos. Whenever a

fellow Pinoy is in a jam, another will come and help out. This act of Filipino brotherly love is what they call “BAYANIHAN”.

Your cat is stuck in a tree? BAYANIHAN.

“Can you help me get this splinter out of my foot?” BAYANIHAN.

“Dude. Can you spot me some pesos? I broke yo.”BAYANIHAN.

It seems like only yesterday when we stood in front of hundreds of faces that came all the way from different parts of Manila to participate in WU! FEST 2013.

We seriously couldn’t have done it without the support of some very talented and amazing people that made July 6th a night to remember. To show your support as they showed to us, drop by their establishments and sample a bit of awesomeness.

Over 1,000 people made it out to our all day festivities. WU! couldn’t ask for more.

FOOSEBALL TABLESFOOSEBALL TABLESA part of WU! Fest’s success were in the incredible things that were showcased thoughout the whole day. It seemed that everywhere you looked had an interesting or new thing that caught interest and sparked curiosity.

People stood in awe as 10 foot stilt walkers walked by, sumos would be wrestling just in front of the stage, and the sounds of competitive fooseball players filled the air. Thanks to these guys, we had an incredible time!

WU! FESTMUSICJuly 6th was ELECTRIC. Bands gathered together to rock WU! Fest. We were amazed by the superb talent that was presented during the evening. Everyone gave it their 100%. The vocals were hypnotic. The bands were jiving and nothing was better than watching the crowd support all these bands that deserve all the kudos in the world. We are thrilled that such bands were able to get all sorts of crazy for WU!

T he Philippines is made up of 7107 islands, and is broken down

into three groups: Luzon, Mindanao, and Visayas. Each of these regions have their own dialects, history, traditions and dance. The most known Filipino dance is Tinikling, it originally comes from the province of Leyte in the Visayas area. Dancers copy the Tinikling bird’s grace and speed as they fly between grass and run over tree branches while avoiding bamboo traps set by rice farmers. Performers jump and hop between the two or sometimes even four bamboo poles being slid across the floor while wearing traditional tribal outfits.

There are several dance groups in the country that perform these cultural dances, but one of the most prestigious is the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, which started in 1972. The dance troupe travels domestically as well as internationally performing dances from all regions of

But when push-comes-to-shove, Filipinos can easily defend the things they care about and themselves from danger. They do this with their own deadly style of Filipino martial arts: ARNIS.

arts. Since he was 12, he’s developed a passion for the martial arts and has a drive to spread the art of Arnis wherever he goes.

“The truly incredible thing about the Filipino martial arts is that you can apply what you learn to everything. The same way you strike empty-handed is the same way you would strike with a knife or a stick. It’s all relative,” says Jeric. “On top of learning to defend yourself, this is an art you can practice even when you’re 90 years old. You never have to stop practicing”.

Ever since movies like the Bourne Identity came out, people have been flocking to Filipinos to learn this fighting style. Just from the quick demo Jeric showed us, it was apparent that Arnis was a style not to be taken lightly.

The ambiance of the restaurant is astonishing. This restaurant gives out a combination of artistic and nature-friendly mood, since a garden surrounds the area as well.

The very first branch of Pan de Amerikana is located in Marikina, which is a chess-themed restaurant. That other branch is worth a visit as well when in the area.

T here’s plenty of things to do when your in Manila. But if there was

one thing you must absolutely not miss during your stay, it would probably be Asia’s only upside-down restaurant: Pan De Americana.

Right off the bat, your eye line will be drawn towards a Land Rover Defender stuck on the restaurants ceiling. Everything from the doors to the windows are completely flipped. We couldn’t believe it if we tried. (Awesome photo to the left)

A few steps inside the strange restaurant, you’ll come across the scenery that will keep you completely baffled. We walked in only to find a giant piano dangling above us. We had a hard time figuring out which way was up! What I really liked about this

At first glance, you wouldn’t think such a place would exist with all the nightclubs and bars next to it. But if you would take a good look, you’d see a fresh clean, outside patio/garden growing between the dark buildings of the Burgos area.

Cafe Curiex is known for many things. But one thing in particular that we thought was truly remarkable was their flavored rums. Our good friend, Jake Alcoseba, is an Alchemist that has experimented and put these new delicious concoctions together. Though the years he’s created mixes like Choco Rum, Banana Rum, and even his (not for the faint of heart) SPICY Rum infused with Chili peppers. If you’re also looking for

something more than food and drink, every Thursday night Cafe Curiex hosts a weekly Art Gallery with different paintings hanging on the wall for both customers and artists to chat over. The smell of rum and loud chatter can be heard from outside. Curiex is alive and people know it.

The first place we hit up was Silantro. A Mexican food restaurant with a fresh healthy twist. Here, we had the Pancholon Burger (160 Php). As a burger, It wouldn’t contend to other meatier and bigger burgers out there in Manila. But if your in the area and want something a little lighter, The Pancholon is a decent replacement. Chock full of very chunky salsa, guacamole, and cheese, this burger will give you good value for your peso and leave you feeling happy you didn’t eat a big patty of meat!

Next was the famous Charlie’s. We tried their delectable San Miguel Beer Wagyu Burger (350 Php) . Already at first bite I could taste the juiciness. This place really lives up to it’s hype. As regarding the burger itself, the bacon on it was cooked perfectly and added a lot of flavor while the beer battered bun didn’t taste much of beer. Charlie’s is a restaurant I’d recommend to all. But word of caution: if you guys do decide to go there, make sure it’s after your payday. This place really drains you of cash. Partly because it’s expensive, partly because it’s so DANG good.

JOE’S MEATSHACK ALL BEEF CHEESEBURGERThe last in our trip was Joe’s Meat Shack. They had a bunch of yummy selections but I had to focus on my mission, their cheeseburger.

The flavor was powerful! Just how I like it. No extra stuff. Just a good ol’ fashioned Cheeseburger! This hunk of meat was solid and if eaten alone would have taken me a while to finish it. Opposite of silantro, this burger is made for men who crave salty flavorful meat. and with only 180 Pesos, you get fries too! How about that!

B ig Bad Wolf is where Red Riding Hood takes off the cape, pigs out,

and enjoys a cocktail or two.

Hidden away at the gateway to Fort lies Big Bad Wolf, a big awesome concept focused on casual feel and individual talent. The set up is an array of mismatched chairs and grandma’s old couches, creating a feeling of coming back home.

But it’s not just a good looker. The food and cocktails that are served here are also a great addition. My favorite of the night was the Aligue pasta, linguine with a crab fat sauce, topped with shrimp. My face almost fell off, it was so delicious! If drinks are your desire, try their mojito for a refreshing drink while watching the sunset.

If you’d like to stay into the later hours, there is always so much happening at BBW as artists come in as well to make this cozy spot a home for their art. All over the walls are local talent and every Thursday there is a showcase that is presented on the blank wall, waiting to be filled with new inspiration. So take some time

to find this hidden treasure and be ready to spend a lot of time doing nothing with your friends, just like you would at home, but with better food.

or economically, but gastronomically as well. It seems that recently new restaurants, hotels, and resorts are popping up, reaching for our attention. But how do you choose the good from the bad? How do you know the quality out of so many choices? For many of us, it's a hit or miss, but there are some out there that know the best and drive for a standard that is internationally embraced. They are the group of Disciples Escoffier.

Inspired by the "king of all chefs and the chef of all kings", Auguste Escoffier, Manila members of this elite hospitality community are on the warpath to attack substandard culinary ingredients, disciplines, and culture. In the words of Escoffier President, Chef Philip Golding and Member Chef Hylton Le Roux: “Manila can now start to evolve

from third-world to first-world dining”. Escoffier's believe that education in better understanding and creativity in the food service world can make Filipinos the new competitor of culinary excellence. What Escoffier provides is knowledge, connections, and support for those with promise in the field or those with dreams of a higher level of cooking.

Seeing that Manila is instantly a land of international culture and adaptation, chefs must also be adaptable to their kitchen, no matter the style, budget, or equipment. The chefs of Escoffier are the best of the best. They believe in the foundation of ingredient quality and the importance of discipline in what they do. Zambales. A serene getaway from the outskirts of Subic Bay. Here, surfers from all over come to de-stress themselves from the daily grind of everyday life. To slow yourself down and live life a little freer takes a different kind of approach. Some say that to slow down is an art, and that’s what we’ve come to experience.

We set out in the afternoon and traveled 5 hours toward Zambales. Along the way we saw rolling hills of grass, strange pointy mountains, and a couple of small towns and villages as we passed by. Finally, after the long and winding drive, we arrived at

nightfall to a cozy inn down a beaten path named: Circle Hostel.

As we walked in we were instantly drawn to the “Laid-back” vibe the Circle Hostel was giving off. Hammocks strewn across the roofs of the sleeping areas, a sand floor, and bamboo structures made Circle Hostel feel like you were thousands of miles away from any sort of civilization. Right as we entered, we were taken aback by some of the most beautiful pieces of art that decorated the entire facility. Strangers, vagabonds, and travelers alike would come and put their creative talents to use. The facilities covered in colors and design put ease into our work-stressed minds.

At night, we crawled into our cozy triple-stacked bunk beds complete with mosquito nets, pillows, and it’s own curtain for privacy. Drifting

to sleep had never felt so relaxing as sounds of nature and gentle breezes quietly lulled us to sleep. We were all eager to get some rest as the beach was only 3 minuets away and the sounds of distant ocean waves tempted us to join.

The very next morning we awoke to the sound of grumbling stomachs. Before we catch some waves, we needed something to hold us for the whole day. It was then we decided to walk next door to Mommy Phoebe’s place.

Greeted by Mommy Phoebe herself, we partook in her delicious Filipino style cuisine. That morning started off fresh with some hot curry soup followed by a juicy omelet, a fresh veggie platter, some Filipino-style prepared shrimp, and

bisteak (for the meat eaters). With our energy levels high, we thanked Mommy Phoebe, rented some surfboards from Circle, and hit the waves.

couple minutes later after our meal, we arrived at the sandy beach of the Zambales coastline. We quickly unpacked our gear and comfortably settled into their beach.

The guys of our group quickly waxed their surfboards, strapped themselves in, and took off to catch some pretty awesome waves. No one needed to bring wet suits as the tropical water was already very warm. Wave after wave felt like a dream.

As the guys barreled down the waves, the girls set up some beach blankets and spent time catching up on life and where things were taking them. It was an afternoon we all hadn’t felt in a while. At the end of the day, we all returned to the hostel with contented smiles and tanned bodies. We spent the last couple of hours in the day ordering chocolate banana & mango smoothies from Mommy Phoebe’s place and continued our conversations over a drink and some guitar music.

Zambales has taught us much about ourselves and what we desperately needed. A minimalistic approach to life, Zambales and Circle Hostel’s atmosphere made it clear to us that to become a beach bum, to live life simply could be the remedy to a stressful work week in Metro Manila. If you’re looking for a chance to get away from it all, to experience a place and time far away from the present, Zambales could provide you with the much needed escape from everyday life.

DR. SKETCHY SKETCH SESSIONS

S ome of you may have already heard about Dr. Sketchy’s either here in

Manila or abroad and may even have attended a session or two but for those of you who haven’t, what it is a burlesque cabaret and life drawing event that is held roughly once a month at different venues around the metro. The original Dr. Sketchy’s was founded by the New York based artist, Molly Crabapple back in 2005 and expanded into an international franchise the following year, currently with branches in 100 cities around the world. In 2011 thanks to Tessa Cam-Rowe a.k.a. Devi Warchild, Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School Philippines was born. In 2012, Devi Warchild moved back

to Canada and the baton was passed to the ladies of Spidersilk Productions who currently run Dr. Sketchy’s Philippines.

The art sessions comprise of short poses ranging from 5 to 20 minutes so it’s quick sketches mainly. You can also take photographs which are use as reference images for more detailed pieces. What I enjoy most about their sessions are the costumes! You really see the time they put in for props, make up, costumes, etc., which makes it one of the most interesting and fun sketching sessions you’ll most likely attend.

S aturday Sketching Sessions was something I started back in 2011 after taking

a two year break from art. After not making anything for that long I felt the need to express myself creatively and figured the best way to do that was to start a group so that like-minded people could get together and make art.

What started out as a 6 member group has quickly grown to over 400 members. We meet once a month at my studio to sketch and paint and talk about different projects. The sessions

are always held on a Saturday afternoon and go on till early evening where we hire a model to do 3 poses, roughly 45 minutes each with rest breaks between poses.

Aside from sketching sessions, I also organize three exhibitions for the group throughout the year and all members are welcome to join. I also post different art related jobs on the group wall in case members would like to apply.
