Arts on the AirThe airwaves come alive this month with drama, music, and film—local, national and international— as WTVP embraces National Arts & Humanities Month! We’re highlighting our ongoing commitment to giving you a front row seat and a backstage pass to the best of the arts, here at home and around the world, both on-air and online.WTVP’s award-winning Art In The Works returns with an exciting new season spotlighting artists who are making their art work in and for Illinois. Each stun-ningly-produced short film tells the story of an individual artist and their passion and process. Produced by WTVP’s Todd Pilon, in partnership with ArtsPartners of Central Illinois and its members, the 13 new films feature beautiful high definition production value and a cool, contemporary feel. Each profile is a work of art itself. Watch for the series in between programming on WTVP, and find out more at wtvp.org. Funding for the series is made possible by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
Also on the local front, WTVP will be introducing you to local people who make and support the arts through The Arts Mean Business. A joint project with ArtsPartners, look for these daily highlights this month both on air and on Facebook. We are also partnering with the Citywide Celebration of Women Artists (Oct. 15-Nov. 15) to get the word out about exhibits and events of, by and about contemporary and historical women artists Look for information on air, online and on social media.
On the national front, bright stars and stellar performances abound as the PBS Arts Fall Festival kicks off and award-winning series continue. Drama takes center stage on Great Performances as The Hollow Crown continues its bril-liant new films of Shakespeare’s history plays, and the performance documentary Raisin in the Sun Revisited captures the history, legacy and backstage challenges of mounting two issue-driven plays simultaneously (Oct. 5 at 8 p.m.). Not to be outdone, Masterpiece brings you a drama double feature with the premiere of The Paradise (starts Oct. Oct. 6 at 8 p.m.) and an encore of Downton Abbey Season (starts Oct. 1 at 9 p.m.).
Music soars as Sir Elton John makes a one-night-only appearance in a new con-cert staged just for PBS (Oct. 5 at 8 p.m.). In Performance at the White House presents Musica Latina on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. And Austin City Limits finds a new home at 11 p.m. beginning Oct. 1.
Film finds a regular home on Mondays at 9 p.m. with Independent Lens and POV. The Screening Room—WTVP’s showcase of local independent films--continues on the first Saturday of the month at 11 p.m. And The Planets, Oct. 18 at 9:0 p.m., showcases a film by Max Fedore and PSO Music Director George Stelluto commissioned by The Peoria Symphony Orchestra.
WTVP also invites you to experience art in person during our special event with wildlife photographer Jim Miller, Oct. 17 in the WTVP Studio (see page 22). For more on all these productions and events, please visit us online at wtvp.org.

notes from the President & CeO
Chet Tomczyk, President & CEOWTVP
Interim General ManagerWILL AM-FM-TV
The annals of poetry and literature are filled with tales of remorse over opportunities lost and roads not taken. I don’t know if fortune favors the bold, but I do know that public television in Peoria and public television and radio in Champaign-Urbana are being given an opportunity to forge a new, cooperative and mutually beneficial rela-tionship. Neither of us is willing to let it pass without at least exploring the prospects.
For many years, WILL and WTVP have collegially existed in adjacent markets, overlapping in the Bloomington-Normal area. We have cooperated on several projects over the years like co-producing Illinois Lawmakers, developing PBS LearningMedia Illinois Edition, and occasionally sharing locally-produced programs. We each faced the fiscal realities of unstable state support and nebulous changes in federal funding, but other than occasional conversation, there was no formal relationship. Then this summer the sun, the moon and the stars seemed to align as never before to offer new possibilities for forming one.
Leaders at each station determined that the new reality of diminishing budgets, emerg-ing technologies, but an unceasing commitment to serve our audiences meant creating a new way of doing business. An opportunity presented itself. The departure of WILL’s general manager to new responsibilities in Nebraska and the anticipated retirement of yours truly next July painted the backdrop for an experiment in cooperation and collaboration. Meaning, the old bugaboo of “Who’s in charge here?” would not be a
factor. We could really begin looking at opportunities for working together to create ways to operate more efficiently and more cost effectively while providing ever more relevant content and services to Central Illinois.
To jump start that process, the leadership at WILL and WTVP charged me with continuing my CEO responsibilities in Peoria while assuming general manage-ment duties in the interim in Champaign.
My task will be to identify what each op-eration can contribute to efficient shared operations, what might work, and what we can do together to create more local programming that is meaningful, useful, affordable, and relevant to YOU.
I will be burning up the roads and the bandwidth between both areas over the next several months, and you will see me on both stations asking for your support. This is public broadcasting after all. Please also take the time to email, text, tweet, call, or even write to let me know your ideas for how these two stations can merge activities to serve you better. Let’s not lose this terrific opportunity.

League of DenialThe National Football League, a multibillion-dollar commercial juggernaut, presides over America’s indisputable national pastime. But the NFL is under assault: thousands of former players and a host of scientists have claimed the league has tried to cover up how football inflicted long-term brain injuries on many players.
What did the NFL know, and when did it know it? What’s the truth about the risks to players? What can be done?
In a special two-hour investigation, League of Denial: The nfL’s Concussion Crisis, premiering Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. on fROntLIne, prize-winning journalists Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru of ESPN reveal the hidden story of the NFL and brain injuries drawn from their forthcoming book, League of Denial: The NFL, Concussions and the Battle for Truth (Crown Archetype, October 2013).
This fROntLIne investigation details how, for years, the league worked to refute scientific evidence that the violent collisions at the heart of the game are linked to an alarming incidence of catastrophic brain damage, death, and other devastating consequences for some of football’s all-time greats.

Superheroes nightLook—up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s Superheroes Night on PBS!
Narrated and hosted by Liev Sch-reiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Superheroes: A never-ending battle is the first documentary to examine the dawn of the comic book genre and its powerful legacy, as well as the evolution of the characters who leapt from the pages over the last 75 years and their ongoing worldwide cultural impact. Originally designed as a three-week series, the one-hour programs are premiering in one appropriately epic night of programming on Oct. 15 from 7-10 p.m.
The series chronicles how these “disposable diversions” were subject to intense government scrutiny for their influence on American chil-dren and how they were created, in large part, by the children of immigrants whose fierce loyalty to a new homeland laid the foundation for a multi-billion-dollar industry that is now an influential part of our national identity.
Co-written by Michael Kantor and Laurence Maslon, the series features on-camera interviews with Stan Lee, Adam West, Lynda Carter, Michael Chabon, Todd McFarlane and many more.

Many Rivers to Cross This fall, noted Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. takes viewers on an unprecedented journey through African-American his-tory—from slavery to freedom, and from the plantation to the White House—in his groundbreaking new six-part series The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
Premiering tuesdays, Oct. and 9 and continuing nov. 5-6 from 7-8 p.m. each week, the six-hour series explores the evolution of the African-American people, as well as the multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives they developed — forging their own history, culture and society against unimaginable odds.
Commencing with the origins of slavery in Africa, the series moves through five centuries of remark-able historic events right up to the present — when America is led by a black president, yet remains a nation deeply divided by race.

War of the Worlds RevisitedOn October 30, 1938, the night before Halloween, the millions of Americans tuned to CBS Radio were treated to an unusual dramatization of H.G. Wells’ classic The War of the Worlds, performed by 23-year-old wunderkind Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater on the Air. Although most listeners understood that the program was a radio drama, the next day’s headlines reported that thousands of others — perhaps a million or more — were plunged into panic, convinced that America was under a deadly Martian attack. Timed to air in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of Welles’ notorious radio broadcast, War of the Worlds, produced and directed by Cathleen O’Connell, premieres on American experience tuesday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m.
Featuring interviews with film director and cinema historian Peter Bogdanovich, Welles’ daughter Chris Welles Feder, and other authors and experts, as well as dramatizations of some of the thousands of letters sent to Welles by an alternately admiring and furious public, War of the Worlds explores how Welles’ ingenious use of the new medium of radio struck fear into an already anxious nation. “In an era when the public can still be fooled or misled by what is read online, in print, or seen on TV, War of the Worlds is a timely reminder of the power of mass media,” said American Experience Executive Producer Mark Samels.

Jim Miller, An Accidental PhotographerJim Miller is not a naturalist. He is not a biologist. He even shies away from being called an artist. What he demurs to being is an amateur photographer, a fellow nature lover with his wife Jayne, and a person with an active interest in the world around him. In his photography, he specializes in capturing unusual moments in the so-called everyday lives of animals all around us. Jim’s vivid images communicate both his passion for wildlife and his knowledge of and respect for the lives of the creatures he photographs. WTVP sat down with Jim to find out more about what makes him “click.”
Q: Jim, your photo collection is vast and varied -- everything from dangerous animals like cougars and bears to simple backyard squirrels. How did you first come to be interested in wildlife photography? A: Completely by accident. Our old Instamatic 110 camera broke right when all four of our kids were coming home to visit. I needed something to get photos of the family while we were all together, so I went to Peoria Camera and picked up a 35mm Nikon with a detachable lens. After the kids left, Jayne and I took it along with us on birding walks to help us identify species we didn’t recognize. Things just took off from there. I realized pretty quickly that the 50mm lens that came with the camera wasn’t sufficient for wildlife photography. I’ve noticed that, over the years, my lenses have grown exponentially with my interest in wildlife photography! (I now use an 80-400mm VR most commonly, and a 500f/4 as my “big gun”.)
Q: Every photo has a story. Unfortunately, you cannot tell every story at this event. Give us a teaser about one story you will tell…A: I’m always amazed at what animals seem to know that humans don’t…what they can sense long before we can. Take a look at the photo I call “Eagle’s Nest at Sunset” (at right). What’s wrong with the nest…?
Q: What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned about the animal kingdom? A: “Free as a bird” they say—ha! I’m continually surprised at how hard life is in the wild. From a 40-50% infant mortality rate to the dangers of migration to the daily fight to find food and avoid predators, I am just amazed by how strong willed, resilient and adaptable animals are.
Q: Give us a tip or two to help members who might want to improve their photography skills. A: My #1 tip is: Don’t ask Jayne! My wife is as interested in my subject matter as much I am, but doesn’t know—or want to know—about the technical photography part. Se-riously, though, if your local camera shop offers classes, take advantage of them. Experi-ment with lighting and making sure your subject’s eyes are open and in sharp focus to add life to your images. And my most important tip to aspiring nature photographers
is to use the heaviest tripod and head that your spouse can carry! That’s something I learned from Rod Planck, a professional nature photographer from Michigan.
Q: We know it’s like choosing a favorite child, but tell us your current favorite photograph.A: That’s easy—our wedding photo! Of my own work, there are dozens I truly care for. The non-typical ones stay with me. Like the one of the brown bear taking a nap in the middle of a stream, using a hummock as a pillow. How often do you see that? And there’s one of a Little Green Heron with a fish in its beak. It’s special, not because Little Green Herons are uncommon, but because they are so shy that managing to capture a close up image of one is so unusual.
What: Moments in the Wild— The Photography of Jim MillerWhen: Thursday, Oct. 17, 6:30 p.m.
Where: WTVP Studio, 101 State Street, Peoria

Gustav Holst’s The PlanetsViewers are in for a special treat on friday, Oct. 18 at 9:0 p.m. when WTVP presents The Planets, a musical journey through science and imagination. The film was com-missioned by the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and created by the young, award-winning filmmaker Max Fedore and PSO Music Director George Stelluto.
Not just about science, the film en-compasses mythological figures Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Neptune, and represents great writers and great minds inspired by the heavens. And, according to Stelluto, “it’s not just a planetary journey, but a life journey – a kind of allegory of our own travels forward through time in search of ourselves.” All in all, there are over 250 images, literary quotes, and works of art presented in the film.
Holst was intrigued with many musical styles and developments from the music of Debussy and Stravinsky to the revolutionary Schoenberg. His influence can be found in science fiction film sound tracks and video games to this day. “The Planets is Holst’s most enduring work, loved by almost everyone who has heard it,” said Stelluto.
This performance accompanying the film is not a performance by the Peoria Symphony Orchestra but is conducted by George Stelluto.
To see Maestro Stelluto’s remarks on The Planets in their entirety, please visit wtvp.org.
