Harbour Beach, Tenby by Mark Morris.

ARTIST and teacherMark Morris’ solo exhibi-tion has opened in TheWhite Lion Street Gal-lery in Tenby.

Mark’s work has devel-oped over the years to pro-duce an easy impressioniststyle based on accuratedrawing and a firm knowl-edge and understandingof painters from Degas toSickert, and most recently,Ken Howard.

Though working en pleinair whenever he has theopportunity, Mark’s output

is often studio based andconcentrated into theschool holiday periods. Hepaints in acrylic, workingon a broken backgroundand allowing strong coloursto “leak” through.

With several paintingsin progress at the sametime, Mark works in stageswith each one until he issatisfied with the result,taking anything from two

days to as many months topronounce one finished.

His preferred subjectsare peopled townscapes.He has always enjoyedpainting Tenby for theatmospheric light condi-tions here: “whether it’s thelight sparkling on the sea orthe contre jour effect seenat particular times of dayalong Tenby’s streets andalleyways.” He is “espe-cially drawn to St GeorgesStreet with the busyness of holiday makers returningat the end of the afternoon,

but in contrast the tranquil-lity and unique atmosphereof the area around theTudor Merchant’s House”also attracts him.

With the Tudor Mer-chant’s House series, hedeparts from his normalstyle, using several imagesto capture a wider view atdifferent spots outside thehouse, resulting in unusualpieces that illustrate the

looming height of the buildings over-head in Bridge Street and Quay Hill.Mark’s largest works are new pieces of London, his favourite haunt overlook-ing the South Bank. A painting calledWinter afternoon has a wonderfulsoft light effect contrasting with the

hustle and bustle of people wthe buskers beneath Golden JBridge.

Album Review: Wilder Mind, Mumford & Sons Album Review: Rose Windows

MUSIC fans will be step-ping back to the 90s aschart topper Beverley Cra-ven comes to the QueensHall, Narberth on May 29.

The Brit Award-winningsinger became a householdname in the early 90s afterher 1991 single Promise Mebecame a huge hit acrossEurope.

Her self-named debutalbum became a worldwidehit, selling more than two

million copies, and therefollowed a string of chartsuccesses including Memo-ries, Holding On, Woman ToWoman and Love Scenes andmaking her a householdname.

After a long break fromthe limelight, she hit theroad again with a sell-outtour in 2014, and is return-ing in 2015 to perform at ahandful of select venues asshe continues to promote

her acclaimed latest albumChange of Heart .

Aside from being a monthof political uncertainty, May 2015, is also one of musi-cal calamity. Two eagerlyanticipated albums werereleased last week, both of which have left me frustrated and both of which will un-doubtedly divide fans; fromone artist they will plead for more, the other they will beg to stop.

Mumford & Sons

Wider MindIsand / Gassnote

Mumford & Sons hail fromthe Big Smoke, and cut theirteeth on the rising popular-ity of the West London folkscene in 2007. Wilder Mind is their third studio album,

and one which I have beendesperate to tear the cel-lophane off for months.Everything was ridingon this album. Their firstrecording, Sigh No More,shimmered with a rusticquaintness that was incred-ibly catchy and likeableonce you managed to acceptthe West London lad singingas though he had lived hisentire life in the AmericanMidwest. Still, Sigh No More, was a hugely enjoy-able affair. Their secondoffering, Babel , lost somesignature charm. The rous-ing foot-stomping dramaof the first album becamepredictable and cliché in thesecond. Wilder Mind is thatall too difficult third album,that critical opportunity topull back on the stick to getthe nose pointing skywardonce more. Unfortunatelyfor Mumford & Sons theground is still approachingrapidly.

There was a concertedeffort to reinvent the bandfor this album; back inearly April when the bandsWikipedia page was editedto read “British Rock Band”rather than “AlternativeFolk-Rock” I be gan to worr y.

The opening track Tomp-kins Square Park is pleas-ant, and rather difficultto describe any further. Iskipped to the title trackWilder Minds, only to findit sounded remarkably likethe first. My worry quicklybecame alarm. Had the bassplayer, Ted Dwane, been

rendered incapable of play-ing nothing other than rootnotes? And as far as my earscould tell Marcus Mumfordhimself had been replacedby a drum machine. There’ssomething a little DavidGray lurking between thesnare drum rim-shots…and I don’t like i t. PerhapsI am getting old because Ifeel like I have heard all thisbefore.

By the time I reached Mon-ster , the sixth track, I knewI would never make it to theend of the album. Mumford& Sons have tried so veryhard to reinvent themselves,to become something newand different. It is a shamethey had not decided intowhat they were changingbefore throwing away thesound and identity thatearned them their reputa-tion in the first place.

“Our new sound will freakpeople out.” Marcus Mum-ford said. I think “freak”is far too strong a word.At best I am managingimpassive. “I don’t reallycare about how we’re seenright now, because I thinkthe story of this band willbe a long one.” Marcus toldNME, and he’s right. For

years people will lamentthe month when one of Britain’s brightest sparksof the indie-folk scenereinvented themselves intosomething plain, unimagi-native and bland.

The second travesty of the month is that RoseWindows split up beforetheir latest self-titled albumeven made it to the shelves.To make matters worse, itis an astonishingly goodalbum.

Chris Cheveyo formedRose Windows back in 2011,when America was grippedby the strangle hold of austerity. With fuel pricesclimbing and the cost of living soaring, most of the new recession musi-cians were solo operations;switching expensive studioproduction time for laptoprecordings in bedrooms

and essential food andfuel. Chris, however, hadan artistic goal in mindand jumped in feet first byforming this Seattle-basedsextet.

Rose Windows are thestylistic equivalent of apatchwork-quilt. They areinfluenced by everythingfrom “American folk toWest Saharan guitar rock,from pentatonic proto-metal to traditional Persianmusic, from the darker cor-

ners of California’s earlypsych scene to the hazyatmospherics of contempo-rary drone artists.”

Their latest, and last,album is no less lavish andopulent. It opens with atrack called Bodhi Song ,a reference to Buddhistenlightenment. A reverb-

drenched wild-west guitarriff ploughs into a swag-gering foot-stomper of atrack. Strangely, the leadvocals on this first song arenot provided by regularvocalist Rabia ShaheenQazi, whose wonderfullyexotic voice fronts the restof the album.

The second track GloryGlory unleashes a lo-fifuzz-guitar theme that willhave you yearning for anoutrageously over-poweredconvertible and the openroad. Strip Mall Babylonis a beautifully stripped-back song, which meldstogether loungey flute licksand catchy lyrics. The songgrows and distorts intoa g rungy guitar-drivenchorus, complete withsearing Hammond organand churning lo-fi bass.

There is so much to loveabout this album, and somuch to hate in that thesenine incredible tracks arethe last that we will hearfrom Rose Windows. If youare unfortunate enough tohave never heard the bandthen please, forget aboutpolitical, economic or envi-ronmental troubles just fora moment and listen.

FOLLOWING the successof last year’s exhibi-tion, a new collection of Pembrokeshire in Blackand White has gone ondisplay at the WaterfrontGallery in Milford Docks.

Gallery director DavidRandell said: “A slight dif-ference this year is that inaddition to photography weare extending the mediumto include drawings, etch-ings and water colours.Most of this, by Pembroke-shire residents, has beenmade for this show – so ithasn’t been seen before.”

John Cahill’s distinctive

drawings and etchingsinclude detailed studies of farm animals and the Pem-brokeshire landscape.

In contrast, Janet

Llewellyn’s watercolourworks capture the ruralatmosphere of Pembrokesh-ire cottages and farmhousesin a totally dif ferent way.

Also showing, are twonew sculptures by Ceredi-gion-base d Ben Dearnley.

Photographer PhilipClarke’s hand-printed workincludes roots and treestudies. In contrast, Heath-er Bennett works mainlywith digital equipment.

Entrants toprepare asthe big daydraws nearIT’S that time of the yearagain where farmers, horsebreeders, riders, gardenersand dog owners are preen-ing and preparing their ex-hibits ready for a busy sum-mer showing season.

With an early start, theyare all busy trying to es-tablish the best conditionexhibit and replace the oldrough winter coats withshiny new summer ones.The start of the season is al-ways marked by the largestSpring agricultural showhere in West Wales with theSt Clears YFC Agriculturalshow held at the UnitedCounties show ground atCarmarthen on May 23.

The show will feature acompletely new facelift thisyearwith an improvedshow

ground layout that has liter-ally been turned through180 degrees. This will offerbetter ring facilities for thehorse exhibitors away fromthe general public includinga large collecting ring.

Parking will be easier forexhibitors and the generalpublic should enjoy hardstanding parking whilesheep and dog show exhibi-tors will also enjoy betterfacilitiesfor parking and ex-hibiting. Cattle exhibitorswill remain unaffected.

The show represents agreat day out for all the fam-ily with lots to see and doincluding the cattle, sheep,horses, dogs, crafts and hor-ticulture classes. What peo-ple often fail to recognise isthat West Wales really has

some of the highest qual-ity standards in the countrywith exhibitors excelling intop shows and events.

It will be interesting to seewhat new animals will bebrought out this year and tosee how they perform.

The highlight of the showwill be the vintage tractordisplay where the ringsideis always packed with peo-ple reminiscing of theirpast.

And as for thrills andspills, well we can rest as-sured from our enthusiasticteam of locals who will bestaging the local Inter Huntrelay later in the show day.Last years inaugural classproved incredibly popularwith the troops from the lo-cal Carmarthen Hunt.

The show opens its gatesfrom 8.30am with the startof the horse show with afull itinerary of agricultur-al classes across the showground concluding around5.30pm.

Entry tothe show includesfree horticulture and dogshow entry, so get all thefamily to submit some en-tries into the craft show.

Ben Reynolds,Park View, Trevaughan,Whitland sold his April 2014 born heif-er for 65 0gns to A Kennedy. This heiferwas sired by Eirianfa Griff.

Champion bull, and the only bull onoffer, was a young bull from Gareth andDiane James. This 15 month old wasa substitute to the catalogue but wasunsold. Judges were Mr Gareth Daviesand son Daniel Davies of Maes-y-Cas-tell, Taliaris, Llandeilo. Auctioneerswere JJ Morris,Whitland.
