Fast: 10K machines in 45 minutesScalable: 100K machine inventory routinely testedExtensible: new collectors easily added
Server Consolidation
How many hosts are required?Which Virtual Machines can be placed on each host?Perform What-If scenarios
Server Consolidation Workflow
1. Run Server Inventory
2. Collect Server Utilization Details
3. Run Server Consolidation Assessment
4. Generate proposals and reports

Step2 - Collecting Performance Metrics
AgentlessMetrics gathered every 5 minutesUses WMI Data collected is extensive
MAP
Configuring Performance Metrics
If you know when peaks occur, run it starting 1 hr before peak, let it run until 1 hr after peakIf you don’t know the behavior of the environment, need to run it for a longer time (days or weeks)If possible, try to capture around a business cycle event, such as end-of-month processes
Performance Metrics Impact
Performance samples are taken on 5 minute intervalsNetwork I/O utilization
First sample transfers ~ 2MB of data per computer being observed (perf counter metadata + data)Each subsequent sample transfers ~18-20KB of data per computer being observed (perf counter data only)
Database Disk space utilizationDatabase grows at 53KB per observed machine per hourNew for SQL Express 2008 R2: database size limit is 10GB
