Satellite Imagery X-RAY Solar Images and the use False Color Imagery When looking at how active the Sun is with respect to radiation (energy), X-RAY imagery is used to show the active areas of the Sun. The active area of the Sun in these images is shown in a different color and is situated along the equatorial region.

Satellite Images: Visible Light Imagesof the SunThese are Visible light or white-light images (gray) as we would see the Sun if you were to walk outside and look at it. (CAUTION- NEVER look directly at the Sun) These images show dark sunspots on the Suns outer surface. Sunspots show cooler areas on the Suns outer photosphere.

Can you MATCH the White Light image to the correct XRAY image? Do they correlate in someway?

Answer: There is an actual physical connection between sunspots and X-ray active regionsSunspots are locations where intense magnetic fields pass through the photosphere. The bright active regions in the corona are also regions of concentrated magnetic field; the loop-like structures sometimes seen in active regions actually trace out the direction of magnetic field lines. The fact that an X-ray active region is found in the corona directly above a photospheric sunspot suggests that the same magnetic field links them both: the magnetic field threads through the sunspot up into the corona, where it loops back down again to the photosphere below.Inquiry Journalshttp://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/

Creating Images from Sun SpotsComputers often record and transfer information using a series of ones (1) and zeros (0). This is called a "binary system.PixelsCreate images of sun spots from the binary system
