On the COVERThe crew loaded up in Jon Shell’s

sprinter van and headed to an old

spot in Tampa that’s been asking for a

young gun with fresh knees. Bammer

didn’t hesitate to throw his carcass

down the double before a power-

tripping city worker gave us the boot.

CAMP MALLARDIf you like the front porch view of a wakeskate oasis, and the quaint hospitality of a small town, Camp Mallard is your place. Always greeted warmly, celebrated with close friends, and left completely satisfied after my stay. Amenities include a complimentary cigarette upon arrival, mural painting , and a variety of sugary liquors. Always a keen time at Camp Mallard. Thanks for a great time.

WINCHINGJust get out and do it. Think of possibilities to hit spots different ways and keep it fresh. Winching will always keep our sport creative and diverse. Winching is not a fad or phase in wake, it’s a liberation from the mundane and routine, and at a means that most the population can acquire.

LOYALTYWho better to distribute our creations than us? Loyalty is a company rooted in wakeskating. Built to work for wakeskating and present unique products and brands that wakeskating deserves to have. So if you like the hard work from companies such as The Wakeskate Mag, Aquarium, and Aphid, then you’re going to love Loyalty.

APHIDAphid Wakeskates is by far the greatest project I’ve ever been a part of. So much passion goes into every aspect of it. After all these years of working with companies, we know exactly what we want our skates to ride and look like and I couldn’t be happier. The team, the skates, the art, everything is exactly what we want and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Aphid. It’s truly a worthy cause to support.

JACKSONVILLEJankyville is great. Tons of winch spots, tons of skate spots. The ocean is sick and we generally get really fun surf at times. It’s where I paint, draw, and make goofy stuff. It’s like a creative fortress of solitude.

TRAVELI’ve been getting around. I got to go to the Philippines and shred CWC and Republic. We did like 1,500 miles through Florida last fall on the Aquarium Can Tour. There’s nothing like a new setting to get the creative juices flowing.

Location?Benoni, South Africa Current sponsors?Fox South Africa, Globe South Africa, Skullcandy South Africa, Goodwood Wakeskates.

Best place to ride?Little Africa. With the Pont back home in South Africa following very closely behind.

Are you coming back to the States this year?I can’t confirm it yet, but it is definitely in my intentions to come back. Let’s hope it works out.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?Hopefully wakeskating a lot more and spending more time in the U.S. I would also like to have visited Europe and possibly Australia by then.

Worst wake injury?Tearing my left pectoral was pretty painful and frustrating, but I have been pretty lucky.

What’s it like working at Skullcandy? It’s super fun. It’s a great company full of young guys all over the world and I get time off from them to wakeskate and do cool stuff which helps a lot! All in all I’m really blessed to have the opportunity to work there.

Any other shredders in South Africa among the wakeskate scene?Yeah for sure! We have Bryan Loggenberg who shreds hard on anything he rides and has a really good style. Then Two Step is also coming up strong now and I’m amped to see what he’s got up his sleeve. We also have a few groms in

the pipelines that will hopefully keep at it and start shredding soon!

How did you come across wakeskating in SA?I used to go and skate a mini ramp down at a lake not so far from my house, then I met a really cool family where all the brothers skated and spent a bunch of time wakeskating. They taught me how to wakeboard and then eventually after seeing Diets on a wakeskate at our local cable the movement to a wakeskate was just a comfortable fun progression.

What do you spend most of your time riding? I will do most of my riding on the cable just because it is accessible for me and its not too far from work. Other than that I am fortunate enough to get some riding in behind the boat or a jet ski with my buddy Bryan. We have also been getting dudes amped on winching this side and spending time in the sewers.

Page 19: WSM - Issue #10

So you’ve ridden a bunch of everything, what would be your choice everyday: winch, cable, ski, or boat? It’s all wakeskating to me, I love all of them and really enjoy all of it and watching all of it. Whether it’s Ben slaying a winch spot, Nick on the jetski, Diets making it behind the boat or Leo shredding the cable, I love it all!

You spent three months in Florida cruising around with Diets and riding at Little Africa, how did that differ from riding back at home? It was pretty different but super fun. We spent most of the time winching the pool gap and riding behind Diets’ Tige which was super fun. I think I learned more in those three months with Diets and all the dudes there than school or any other life lesson had ever taught me.

Best American foods? Reese’s peanut butter cups and Chipotle! Chick-Fil-A is also pretty amazing.

Best South African food?Biltong no doubt! Anything that is done on the braai is always good! For take always I’d have to say Nando’s is my favorite.

Who do you want to thank? My mom and dad and gran, my bro and sis, Diets, Arno, the Peaches, Taco, Vogel, both Dyls, 2 Step, Dev, Jono, Clay, Daniel and Dustin, Matt and Dorin, Hailey, Phiko and Ryan, Nick, Victoria, Marley, Salem and Brutus and anyone else who has filmed, driven, lifted or housed me. There is so many of you and I love you all!

I think I speak for a majority of the wakeskate community when I say Groveland was a

home away from home. There was a wonderful sense of community and appreciation

for one thing...wakeskating! With the abundance of love for one common interest it

was only a matter of time before it became a wakeskater's paradise.

There was a time when I would leave work, drive an hour and a half, and be so excited

to pick up a shovel and get to work. I would take day trips, sometimes I would just go

with no idea and just stay for days upon days to try and see a project to its finish. It

was perfect though, I knew that it would not be long before we were just riding every

day and filming every day and most importantly doing everything necessary to take

wakeskating just a little bit further. Weeks were spent like this, coming and going as I

pleased and seeing new faces every time I went back.

Throughout the working, shredding, filming, disc golfing, brown dogging, and all

the people that came and went, there were two people that were there every day.

No matter the conditions you could expect Kyle and Tad would make their absolute

best effort to make something happen. Early on I realized these guys had no end

goal as far as the perfect spot. They were just moving forward. I must say I much look

forward to the next project and what can come from it. Though there will be no more

filming at this particular setup I am sure the video will be mind blowing! --Bammer

For a week or so, we would wake up to the winch ponds topped off, a freshly swept skatebarn and a warmed up winch. Yan was no where to be found, he’d already set up everything, made his way to town to steal wifi and taken care of business before we were even ready to ride. This is Yan enjoying the fruits of his labor. Land gap back big. Photo: Mathews

Chaboy’s got ups. Bammer put in the work at this fun park. Day trips out to Groveland were the norm and he usually brought a few extra hands to contribute to work club. He was on his way to being foreman! Photo: Shell

Kyle doesn’t wakeskate until everyone is fed and has had their fair share of riding in. Once all of the chores were done and he physically couldn’t work anymore, he showed up with a high-speed front noseblunt. Photo: Mathews

We might have to start calling Nick Taylor the Mad Scientist. He has his own equations and formulas for wakeskating and they seem to be producing favorable results. Front 270 to switch frontboard shuv. Sequence: Jon Shell

Even after an extended vacation in the Philippines, Andrew Pastura still managed to find his way to Florida to stay with us in Groveland for a while. He was warmed up and the farm didn’t stand a chance. Drew had to muscle the cows to get this backtail shuv. Photo: Reid

Collin: How old are you? What is your riding stance? And list your sponsors for us.Bret: I am thirty years old, I am regular footed, and my sponsors are O’neill, Byerly Boards, Rockstar Energy Drinks, Rukus board shop, and The Texas Ski Ranch.

Hometown and current residence? Austin, Texas, born and raised.

It’s 2014, where are your stomping grounds? All over Central Texas. I love this area, the Hill Country. It’s beautiful, we have more rivers than most places, lots of spring fed, crystal clear waters, and beautiful winch spots. Plus all the cables popping up all over the place, can’t complain a whole lot about that.

The man speaks truth. Who is your normal crew? Who you kicking it with the most often and shredding with?Well definitely yourself, the brothers Roehm, ol’ Tex Aaron Reed, I do a lot of riding with Tom Fooshee, he’s a homie for all time. I mean there is a

list of trues, there is all sorts of people we normally ride with. We got Collin Hass, Will, Tim, Ryker. I mean if we named names we would be here all day.

What’s your current job? Full-time wakeskater?Full time wakeskater still. Just reapplied for school to get on that real life job scene, plus I do random things here and there, judging some stuff when I can, doing whatever, whenever, to make extra.

Favorite place that wakeskating has taken you? That one is tough. I have been to some beautiful places. More places than I thought wakeskating would ever take me. I would have to say the Philippines would be the most paradise-ish location that I have been to. Not a huge fan of the food down there, but the riding was top level at the time and apparently they have things up to prime there, so I would not mind going back to the area.

Who is your favorite wakeskater?I don’t like this question. I have a lot of favorite wakeskaters. You’re one of my favorite wakeskaters.

Ha! You got me blushing over here. There is a few man, just a couple of people I have to name because if I didn’t I would feel terrible. Andrew Pastura obviously, one of the best, one of the most stylish riders, most technical, a blast to watch every time he rides. And my boy Blake Steele, always one of my favorites. He could not ride for the next six years and go out and do things that most people would not even think of. Beyond that I like watching everybody, I can’t narrow it down too much but there is a few guys out there that really have the style pushed in the right direction and are really fun to watch.

What’s your favorite video part to date? To date one of my favorites is Aaron Reed in Volume Videos issue two. The song and the part and the way it made me feel about wakeskating and wanting to go wakeskate, I would have to

say that for an all-time part that is probably my favorite. But if you weren’t interviewing me right now I would have maybe said your part from the Integrity video.

That’s on record, thank you. Number ten is your craziest story, winching or whatever it may be, what is it?That’s tough too, cause I have seen some wild stuff. I mean there has been times where I have seen people like Andrew or Nick breeze through every trick you can think of first try. And there are truly wild times where like I was holding Aaron Reed’s leg together when we were winching a little sea wall on Lake Languini where he broke it in a couple pieces, and I had to stand halfway in the water with ant piles, holding his leg together for an hour or so. But I don’t think I could narrow it down to just one, I have seen a

Page 37: WSM - Issue #10

lot of stuff over the years and I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world.

Hell yeah, so what do you like to do besides wakeskate?I like to brew beer, me and my lady have been on a brewing trip recently. We have a little setup here at the house and we’ve been giving a go at making our own home brews and it has been turning out well so far. A lot of positive reviews so far and stuff that we have liked ourselves.

What is your favorite spot to ride, where you really let your hair down?My favorite spot is one thats only good on perfect conditions. You know what I am about to say and that’s the Leech Launch. One of the best up gaps I have ever hit in my life, and it’s a beautiful sight to be seen but we do not get to do it enough.

What is your favorite anime movie? You son of a bitch.

I got you! [Laughs] I told you, this is no joke.Series, show or whatever. Just has to be anime.Samurai Champloo and I’m going to have to spell that because I know you guys won’t know how.

What is the newest maneuver you have acquired in your trick bag, give it to me straight.Switch heelflip.

Wow! Ok, in the last decade what has been your most memorable wakeskating get together. It would be Devise and Conquer. Hands down that has been, to this date, the most fun event that I have been a part of and I wish it would come back, hint-hint-wink-wink, sponsorship dollars, if anyone is listening, please bring it back.

Page 38: WSM - Issue #10

You always have a crowd and do well in Texas events. How was the Two-Step? The contest was crazy! From the massive drop and metal rails, to the exciting new venue, it really brought out some of the gnarliest riding and a hell of a party! Unfortunately, my parents couldn’t come but my amazing girlfriend Maddie happens to be from Dallas and her family came out to get loud and see me ride for the first time. I love having support like that to get me fired up, and help forget that my ankles feel like they’re going to explode. I think I’ve done well at the Texas tour

stops for a few reasons. I helped build the setup for the first one, and probably rode it more than anyone else. But as far as this last one goes, I think I just got lucky that the setup was really big and maybe threw off some of the guys that have perfect setups to train on all the time. The crowd support must be worth something too. [laughs]

In my eyes it should have happened years ago, but how does it feel to have a pro model now?It feels fantastic. Honestly, I had opportunities to make that happen sooner but I decided to

Page 39: WSM - Issue #10

stick with a company that has been great to me over all the years in so many different ways other than having a pro model, and it has helped me to continue wakeskating over the years. At Byerly we now have skates for each of the riders which has been a pleasure and an honor, especially from someone like Scott who is so responsible for us doing this weird little activity. I couldn’t be more thankful to have the opportunity I have with Byerly Boards, to have my name on a product that I know is a quality board.

Final question, any last shoutouts?Fortenberry, everyone who has helped me out over the years. Rockstar, O’Neill, Byerly, everything he has done for everything we do, and all the homies here in Texas. The Ski Ranch for helping me out over the years, Rukus and everyone in Louisana for being the nicest people you could ever meet, and all the homies in Florida that have been true to everything and haven’t let the Orlando vibe get them down and had fun with it and made wakeskating such a great thing to be a part of the last ten years.

Hesitation wasn’t an option at this spot.Deadly Switch Frontboard. Photo: Getter

Page 40: WSM - Issue #10

How old are you and where are you from?Twenty-one, Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Damn, what are you doing in the desert?Living, loving, learning. Any winch spots there?Scattered about Arizona there are spots. There is a good amount in Phoenix. Where do you usually ride?I do a majority of riding in Parker, Arizona on the Colorado River. Do you have homies over there to ride with?Certainly! Many friends that dig riding on the water. We are always looking for more amigos!

What do you do for work?Teach and operate at a 2.0 and drive for a ski school. What are the Arizona cables like? The two Arizona cables are small and friendly. Both are on different parts of the Colorado River, and both are two tower setups. Do you like the winch spots or the cables more?I like cables for many repetitive hits, I enjoy the uniqueness of winch spots. What else do you do?Spreading joy and a positive outlook makes me happy. I like finding fun in anything.

Page 41: WSM - Issue #10

How long have you been skateboarding? I have been skating since I was a little guy in elementary school.

Does it help your wakeskating? To me, wakeskating and skateboarding have a mutually symbiotic relationship. Skating helps me on the water and wakeskating helps with skateboarding. Future plans?Continue learning. Who’s backing you?My life-givers have had my back since day one and all of my friends. Anything else?Thank you wakeskating.Thank you WSM.

TO ME, WAKESKATING AND SKATEBOARDING HAVE A MUTUALLY SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP.
