March 2019 Newsletter Dear Families, We may not be able to put the winter coats away yet, however, the days are getting longer and the sun is getting brighter. Yes, the undoubtedly beautiful month of March is upon us! This time of year is full of change and optimism and we at Brock Corydon are welcoming the first signs of spring with open arms. Take a few moments with your child to note the extended daylight, the buds on trees as they begin to swell, or the icicles forming on neighbouring rooftops. We still have awhile until truespring emerges. But, in the meantime, we owe it to ourselves to enjoy the changes in the weeks ahead. Our upcoming month of excitement comes on the heels of a fabulously cold February. However, the frigid temperatures couldnt keep our enthusiasm for learning and engagement down. Our students were involved in many learning opportunities and clubs during the lunch hour, including Coding, Theatre, Book Club, Knitting, Science Fair Mentorship, Speed Skating, Intramurals, Dance, Mindfulness, Cribbage Club and more. Students also took part in a fabulous school-wide Voyageur Day, class-based Valentines festivities as well as a super-powered I Love to Read Monthfull of activities. Thank you to all the volunteers, teachers and staff who continue to give of their time to enrich the lives and learning experience here at Brock Corydon. Thank you! Our school will continue to be a busy centre of learning, reflecting and inquiring this month as we welcome notable and diverse celebrations including the WSD Speed Skating Races, Tri- Conferences, Spirit Week, as well as the school-wide Purim carnival. Some lunch-hour clubs will be continuing into March. Please see the March calendar for dates. Additionally, our school Science Fair is on Tuesday, March 6. You will have an opportunity to come see the projects on display that afternoon. Spirit Week activities are included on page 7 of the newsletter and all students are encouraged to come dressed for each of the splendid themes! On Tuesday, March 12, second term reports will be going home. Within the reports, teachers will share student strengths, challenges and next steps for their learning, with additional information related to learning behaviours. Please review the report card with your child/children. Our ongoing learning journey is a collaborative effort between home and school and together we foster a community of learners. Our learners strive to be the best they can be and we help them achieve these goals in concert with each other. The Tri-Conferences will be held after school on Wednesday, March 13 (some classes only), Thursday, March 14, as well as during the morning of Friday, March 15. As we have many teachers sharing students, please note when your childs teacher is available on the Tri-Conference forms going home on March 4. As always, we will do our best to accommodate your schedule requests. Lastly, please read the important information included on page 5 & 6 of the newsletter that outlines changes to student absence reporting and the launch of the new SafeArrival system that is being implemented after Spring Break on April 1. This is an automated system to report your childs attendance and to ensure the safety of our students. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation while we introduce this new system. Dear Families,

We may not be able to put the winter coats away yet, however, the days are getting longer and the sun is getting brighter. Yes, the undoubtedly beautiful month of March is upon us! Tax Receipts: Tax receipts for Lunch Program payments made from Jan to June 2018 and September to December 2018 have been issued by email. Payments made in 2019 will be receipted Feb 2020 for the 2019 taxation year.

Please notify the lunch program coordinator immediately if there is any change in student contact or medical information or if you no longer require the lunch program.

Reminders: Please be sure to send students with their own cutlery, microwavable container, and a re-heatable lunch. Please do not send lunches that require more than a minute to heat up. 20 lunches at 1 minute each equals 20 minutes of heat up and students have 25 minutes for eating. Lunches taking longer than one minute will not give students enough time to eat!

Weather: Temperature and conditions are soon changing. Children spend about 30 minutes outside at lunch. Please ensure your children have the correct clothing for wet, cold, hot, muddy conditions – that means hats, mitts, nylon pants and extra socks are necessary at this time of year! Children are reminded not to take any food or drink outside during the lunch hour. It attracts bugs (wasps), creates litter and is a choking hazard.

Lunch Program …

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the school’s library. Babysitting is available for school-aged children by emailing Shoshana at [email protected] by Monday, March 4th. The turnout for February’s meeting wasn’t great so we have rescheduled Deborah Parker who is the International Education Program Coordinator to speak to us about hosting families from abroad during the school year. We hope to show her our school support and have parents join us for our March meeting. Thank you to Jane Kraut of organizing the Bothwell cheese fundraiser and to all of you for supporting our school. We have raised $306 from this fundraiser, which will go towards the outdoor classroom. Our next event is the PAC Family Dance, which will be at the school on Friday, April 12th from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. in the gym. We are delighted to once again have Barry Kay from Cherry Tree Productions be our awesome DJ! Notes will be going home soon and the canteen will be open with food for purchase. Volunteers are needed from 5:30-8:30 p.m. to help with the canteen, checking families in and cleanup. This event wouldn’t be possible without the help of Allison Gervais organizing it for us so, thank you Allison! We are still looking for a Treasurer and a Subway Lunch coordinator for next year. If you are interested in either position, please email Michael or Michelle at [email protected]. Your PAC Executive, Shoshana, Michelle, Michael and Jennifer

Phys Ed … Music …

Last month, our theme for music was "I Love to Read Month." Intermediate students have begun learning how to read music from the treble staff, and primary students had a lot of fun using stories to act out and understand instrumental music.

This month, primary students will be examining Mozart's Turkish March and it's use of 16th-note rhythmic figures. They will also get to learn about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his life in the 18th century. Intermediate students will get to practice their knowledge of the treble staff to read and play music on various Instruments in class. Ask your child to tell you how he/she remembers the line notes, they have come up with some VERY creative sentences!

Musically,

Morah Sarah

Student Council …

Intramurals for Gr. 1 students will begin in March at lunch hour recesses. Please check the calendar for dates. Students need to participate in the gym or go outside for the whole lunch hour recess. It is drop-in, so try it once or every time! They will be playing Low Organized Games (simple tag, dodgeball games or activities they have played in Phys. Ed. classes) Interschool Sports: Our Grades 4, 5 and 6 students will participate in our school division non-competitive, Speed Skating races at the Bell/MTS Place on March 7th. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered: assisting us at practices, driving to practices this year, and on race night. We could not run this program, that only our school division offers without all of your assistance. Thank you as well to Ms. Thio, Mr. Fjeldsted, Mr. Sigurdson and Liane Brandt for their assistance. Beginning in mid-April will be Gr. 4-6 Running Club. Information/permission notes will be sent home the first week of April. The first 2 weeks we will run in the gym, as it is easier to learn the different run-walk progressions. After that we will run outside in our field as much as possi-ble. Once we move outside, any parents are welcome to come join us, as there will be enough space. Running Club runs 3 days a week, at 8:00 a.m. usually on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We will run on a Tuesday/Thursday if there are no classes on a Monday/Friday. All dates will be on the

calendar. Students who take the bus to school can participate in Running Club too. Running Club is to prepare for three - 2 km rac-es this year. Two are on Wednesdays the last 2 weeks of May, for South End Schools only and are held at Ecole River Heights JHS field. The other is the first Wednesday in June, at Assiniboine Park. Running Club students will have the opportunity to participate in Manitoba Marathon events that they can train for in conjunction with their Running Club training. Manitoba Marathon events are on the morning of Father’s Day in June. If students are injured/sick, and unable to participate in Phys. Ed. classes, please write a brief note or email the school to let us know. As well, if your child is returning to activity from a serious or long-term injury/illness, please inform us as well. I will err on the side of caution and not let a student in this situation participate until I have been contacted by parents, to be safe.

Two members from our Student

Council had the opportunity to drop

off two donations, one to Siloam

Mission and one to the Winnipeg

Humane Society, made from our

holiday concert ticket funds.

Ramat Korazim… Rm 11 …

Our sister school, Ramat Korazim, has been

working on outdoor art for Tu B’Shivat. They

are drawing and

painting olive

trees to

celebrate the

holiday.

As well, our

teachers, Morah

Paula & Morah

Lilia are getting

very excited for

their visit to

Israel over

Spring Break!

Babas & Baking …

Students from Rm 11 & P2 have

been volunteering with the babas at

Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre.

Room 11 is excited to be learning what our names are in Hebrew. It is fun getting to call our friends by their Hebrew names and have our names called in Hebrew as well. We are learning about the Hebrew alphabet letters that are needed to spell our names and the sounds they make. One activity that we did was building our name using play-dough and Hebrew alphabet cookie cutters.

Rm 9 …

February brought lots of opportunities to celebrate our learning in Room 9, AM Nursery/Kindergarten. Some highlights were Chinese New Year and 100-Days of School!

We are excited to announce that starting Monday, April 1, the first day

back after Spring Break, Brock Corydon will begin using SafeArrival, an

automated attendance system through SchoolMessenger. All Winnipeg

School Division schools will be implementing this system by the end of

2019.

Parents & guardians will need to enter their child’s absences through the

automated system either through the SchoolMessenger App, the

SchoolMessenger website, or through the toll-free phone line at 1-855-

278-4513. The cut-off for reporting absences through SafeArrival is 9:00

a.m. After that time, parents & guardians will need to contact the school

directly to report the absence. If an absence is not reported, a

notification will be sent to those parents & guardians after 9:20 a.m.

each day prompting them to verify the absence. As of April 1, absences

cannot be reported through the school’s email, voicemail or through the

classroom teachers. If you have any questions, please review the

Frequently Asked Questions on the next page of the newsletter before

contacting the office.

Thank you for your understanding as we implement this new system. As

always, the safety of our students is our top priority.

I Love to Read Family Night …

Thank you to all of our families that joined

us for our I Love to Read Family Night! The
