Checklist Training Explanations

The first 5 entries must be manually updated prior to every cement job to ensure that these parameteres have been correctly identified for the upcoming cement job. The preceding “Pre-Pump Checklist” checks for this state in checkpoint 9 shown below.

Emergency Checklist ..............................................................................................................“PREPARED WITH COMPANY MAN”

Date: Date of treatment at the wellsite.

Well Name: Unique name of the well where the cement job is performed.

Minimum Slurry Volume: Minimum volume defined in the agreed cement program. Minimum volume may be defined by regulatory requirements or mitigation of remedial actions (e.g. minimum volume may be decided by ECD limits for circulating out slurry). The client representative on location must be aware of minimum volume.

Clear Pipe: Determine, and agree with company man prior to beginning the job, what action to take upon reaching the Decision Deadline. Choose one of the listed options: Circulate Out, Squeeze. Use this option in step 6b.

Circulate Out: Discuss ECD risks with the customer, if frac gradient might be exceeded.

Squeeze: If the best option is to squeeze the slurry into the formation (e.g. loss zone or large annular volume).

Maximum Stop Time: Defined in the agreed cement program and reviewed with the client on location. 20 minutes is a common best practice based upon the SLB thickening time requirement. The job program must clearly state any maximum stop time greater than 20 minutes.

1. Close the downhole valve so that no fluids are entering the treating line and wellbore.

2. Stop Pumping Time: Take note of the time when pumping stops, and use this time to calculate the Decision Deadline.

3. Add the “Maximum Stop Time” to the “Stop Pumping Time” in question 2, and write this time in the blank. It is important to write the decision deadline so that it can be referenced while trying to fix the condition.

If Condition Fixed Before Decision Deadline:

Attempt to fix the condition to resume mixing and pumping cement. Do not exceed Decision Deadline.

4. Continue the pump schedule if condition cleared.

If Minimum Slurry Pumped at Decision Deadline:

Do not continue to try to clear the condition. Start displacement because the pre-determined minimum slurry volume has already been pumped. If plugs are part of the program, drop the top plug at this point in operations.

5a. Ensure displacement line is open before engaging pump. This line could be from the cement pump, or rig pump. Do not pump into a closed valve.

5b. Start displacement once displacement line is open.

If Decision Deadline Passed:

If the problem cannot be fixed before the Decision Deadline (within the maximum stop time), there is a risk that the cement will set and recovery of the well will be difficult. In this case, the cement should be cleared from the pipe following the previously determined path.

6a. Ensure displacement line is open before engaging pump. This line could be from the cement pump, or rig pump.

6b. Remove cement from the well bore via one of the predetermined methods (Circulate Out, Squeeze). Then the next steps can be determined, which could be to prepare to restart the cement job.
