For his extended essay, chose to analyze how authors use characters and setting to portray the sadness and pain of life. He focused on the works of Akutagawa Ryunosuke, namely texts from the beginning, middle and end of his writing career before his eventual suicide. It was challenging for initially when he undertook this project, as the abstract symbolisms of pain and sadness are hard to decipher through the use of characters and setting, however his personal experiences and keen determination to understand how the progression in Akutagawa's works mirrored his life gave him the determination to find deeper meanings. This has culminated in a thorough and well-researche�analysis.
