PROUD SUPPORTERS OF THE
1 WRFL JUNIOR FOOTY RECORD
Grey skies, blistering winds and a cold chill swept across the western suburbs last weekend as 1400 juniors strapped on the boots for Week #1 of the Junior Finals Series. While the weather conditions epitomized a typical winter’s day, it didn’t dampen the spirits of our juniors who fought hard all day to continue their quest on the
road to premiership glory. Having seen a number of great games and tight competition on the fi eld last week, it was also pleasing to see a number of parents, friends and spectators show good sportsmanship off the fi eld. While we all work hard each week to strive to win, we must remember it is not the sole reason why we play our great game. Children learn the basics of sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and their coaches. Children who see adults behaving in a sportsmanlike manner come to understand that the real winners in sports are those who know how to persevere and to behave with dignity — win, lose or draw.Over the course of the next three weeks, the WRFL would like to remind parents, spectators and players to remember to not lose sight of what is really important, which is to promote a sense of enjoyment while playing the sport they love. This support also extends to the umpires and volunteers who work tirelessly in making sure our game is run smoothly each week. While the weekly WRFL-Western Bulldogs Junior
Heartland Award has concluded for another year, we hope that the values of this award of good sportsmanship, determination, effort and perseverance are still shown during all fi nals matches. If you know of someone who has received a Junior Heartland Award this year, please fl ip to page 32 for details on how to enter the draw to win the Ultimate Football Experience. In other news, the WRFL is pleased to see two past juniors drafted to play at the elite level with the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Football Clubs. Former Port Melbourne Colts junior Brianna Davey and St.Albans junior and 2013 WRFL Youth Girl best and fairest player, Brittany Bonnici were selected at picks #1 and #2 respectively in the recent AFL Women’s Mini Draft. For a look at their journey to the AFL, please turn to page 5.Of course, don’t forget to tune into the WRFL’s weekly Junior Footy Show where I will be interviewing players, coaches and volunteers playing for survival each week in the hope to make their premiership dreams reality. To see our latest episode, visit our website www.wrfl .asn.au. Don’t forget if you have any stories, images or news you would like to see in the WRFL Junior Finals Record, please contact me at k.fi tzgerald@wrfl .asn.au or keep up to date on our social media pages using the handle @westernregionfl . Until then, play hard, kick straight and above all, remember to lead by example and show good sportsmanship both on and off the fi eld this Sunday.

WRFL PRODUCTS THE PICK OF THE BUNCH
By Alex KaravasWhile many footballers have their eyes fi rmly set on September, two WRFL junior products had their eyes set on July 22 when the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Football Clubs announced its selections for the AFL Women’s Mini Draft. To their delight, former Port Colts junior player Brianna Davey and St.Albans youth girl Brittany Bonnici’s lives changed forever, when their names were called out for picks #1 and #2.Hanging up the boots in 2006 after playing 61 games for the Colts as a junior, 20-year-old Brianna Davey has returned to Aussie Rules after missing out on the Matilda’s fi nal squad in the Soccer World Cup last month.Despite the omission, the eight-time Australian international keeper and Melbourne Victory’s number one is excited for the new opportunities she has on the horizon with the Western Bulldogs. “It was disappointing to miss out on going to Canada, but at the same time picking up the footy again has been really good for me in terms of doing something different,” Davey said. Standing in Davey’s way of victory with the Bulldogs is fellow St.Kilda Shark teammate Brittany Bonnici who went to Melbourne at pick number two. Chalking up 121 games and taking home the 2013 WRFL Youth Girls Best and Fairest while she was at the St Albans Football Club, Bonnici said being selected was a dream come true. “It hasn’t sunk it to be completely honest. It’s so surreal until someone brings it up.” A keen Port Adelaide supporter due to them wearing her favourite colours, Bonnici has always been around footy, watching her dad run around the fi eld on those cold, wintery Saturdays. “I got involved in Auskick when I was little and
when I was old enough I started playing with the boys myself,” she said. “I started playing in Under 11’s and it was a bit hard sometimes being a girl as I was constantly questioned on fi eld as to why I’m a girl playing football, but eventually after I played for a few years I felt like I gained a bit of respect.”In the lead up to the Women’s match played at Etihad Stadium on Sunday August 16, Bonnici hopes that the wider football community can come along and show their support. “Unless you barrack for Melbourne or the Bulldogs, you probably wouldn’t know much about this game, so the more publicity we can get the better. “Eventually I would love to see all AFL clubs have a women’s football team associated with it, so more girls have the same opportunity as I have been lucky to receive.”See the girls in action on Sunday August 16 when the pair will go head-to-head in the curtain raiser before the AFL’s Round 20 clash between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne at Etihad Stadium. Follow me on Twitter @Alex_Karra
Congratulations to former WRFL players Brittany Bonnici (St.Albans) and Brianna Davey (Port Colts Junior) who were picked up in the AFL Women’s Mini Draft last week.

31 WRFL JUNIOR FOOTY RECORD
UMPIRES CORNERBy Graeme Hodgart
This is the time of the season when a familiar comment is made within the umpiring group. It is usually directed towards those who have not made too many training sessions in the fi rst half of the season but have now started to appear on the training track. “It must be fi nals’ time!”Kicking off the junior fi nals last weekend, everyone knows that the senior fi nals are just around the corner. And, there are those who make a special effort to get to training. This is a positive move but it cannot override those who have been committed to training all season, with many training with the umpiring group at the beginning of February. So that no-one is disadvantaged, each of the coaching staff keep detailed records on who has or hasn’t been at umpire training sessions. Just like the many players from each of the football clubs, training is so important. Not only does it help develop and build up skills but there is also the social aspect. While each discipline of fi eld, boundary and goal, train independently of each other for most of the time, there is still the opportunity to meet and greet others. It might be something as simple as a hello or a quick comment as one running group passes another. Then again it may be a short conversation in the change rooms or a chat in the social rooms after training has fi nished. One umpire recalls when umpiring in another association, the three disciplines trained at different venues. This meant that you didn’t see the other umpires until you turned up to your game each week. There was also a monthly meeting but not everyone attended and there wasn’t any opportunity to socialise over some food or a quiet drink.Although both the WRFL fi eld and boundary umpires practise some skills during training, it is the goal umpires who set the pace in this area. After they warm up by walking a lap or two, they turn on the speed and run a couple of laps, before they get stuck into a series of stretches and then it’s into the skill work. While one group uses the
goals for set or snapped shots, the other group does signalling and positioning work, which allows for collective and individual coaching. The umpires are encouraged to discuss various aspects of goal umpiring. Both groups swap and then it’s a lap of running and one of walking followed by some stretches to fi nish the session.Hopefully, the skills practised by the fi eld, boundary and goal umpires during the training nights are on display at the game that you are watching. For more information on WRFL umpiring, visit our website www.wrfl umpires.com.au
