He made it as far as Glenora, B.C. on the Stikine River and returned to the lower 48. Returned to Wrangell about 1925. He was also a photographer, filming various happenings around Alaska for news bureaus: Pathe Film Corp., Lathrop Corp., Paramount. He produced a film on the Stikine River which he showed at Wrangell. He filmed the arrival of the U.S. Army planes, Black Wolf Squadron, in 1920. Spouse: Mildred Sylvester Suratt, daughter of Rufus and Rose Sylvester. Tamaree, Matilda Kinnon (Mrs. Paul-Tamaree) DOD: 08/20/1952 DOB: Victoria, B.C. Age 90 years. A pupil of Amanda McFarland. Was one of the most influential Native women in Alaska. First Alaskan Woman Elder in Presbyterian Church. Through her efforts the Alaska Native Sisterhood was formed, patterned after the Alaska Native Brotherhood. (Wrangell ANS is Camp #1.) Spent many years working within the church in various capacities. First married Louis Paul in 1862. Married Wm. Tamaree in May 1905. Sons: William Louis Paul, Louis Paul, Samuel Kendall Paul (named for Rev. S. Hall Young and Dr. Henry Kendall). Daughter: Frances B. Tamaree. Sixteen grandchildren, 7 great-granchildren and one great-great grandchild. Louis Paul married Matilda Jones, daughter of M/M Charles Jones in 1918. 09/15/1952 AW

Operated first mail boat with his partner L.M. Churchill. They owned the “Baranof” and operated between Wrangell and the west coast of Prince of Wales Island. Member Episcopal Church, Redmen’s Lodge and Pioneers of Alaska. Had an interest in the Wrangell Garnet Ledge with Alex Vreatt in 1905. A “Harry Swift” also had an interest in the ledge in 1889 with David L. Shoemaker. Spouse: Ada Nicholson in 1890 who died in 1928. Sons: William M. Taylor, Jr., Lawrence Taylor. Step-daughters: Mrs. Conrad Nelson, Mrs. David Lewis. Sister and two brothers in Pennsylvania. He was a great-grandson to President Zachery Taylor on his father’s side and descendant of William Henry Harrison on his mother’s side. Seattle, Washington. He was the U.S. Commmissioner for over 30 years at Wrangell. The youngest child of a large family. His family came over the Blue Mountains following the Oregon Trail in 1851. He was carried off by a cougar but was saved from certain death by the men in the party. The family settled near Scio, Oregon. Parents: Thomas Turpin Thomas and Nancy Curl Thomas. His mother died when he was 7 years old. His father died two years later. He had brothers and sisters of which only two sisters were surviving at the time of his death. Tow-a-tt, Chief DOD: 1879 DOB: Spouse: Julias Tow-a-tt. They, and Moses and Marth Lewis, were first Native couple married in Presbyterian Church in 1878, married by Rev. John G. Brady. He is remembered as a nobleman among his people. He was shot and killed by an enemy Native in 1879 during an altercation between the Fort Wrangell Village and “outsiders.” Rev. S. Hall Young recounts this in his book “Hall Young of Alaska.” The chief, according to his culture, had two wifes: Eve and her daughter Julia, by a former marriage. When the Christians came and requried monogamy, the Chief chose Julia to be his wife. Eve remained as the mother-in-law in the house. 04/28/1927 2:3 WS
