INGV presentation

INGV is the most important research institute for seismic and volcanic hazard studies in Italy.

Since 1995, is involved through its RIDGE Marine Unit in geophysical and environmental monitoring at sea. INGV was coordinator of GEOSTAR EU project series (1996-2005) developing the first European deep seafloor multidisciplinary observatory.

INGV – ACTIVITY IN KM3NET (WP5-WP9)

KM3NeT KICK-OFF MEETING

Erlangen,11-13 April 2006

Perform and analyse long-term measurements - On-going real-time monitoring by SN-1 - Possible long-term monitoring of radioactivity (mooring or autonomous probe)

Assess existing water, ocean., bio., geo. data from candidate sites - Seismic and oceanographic data from SN-1 for Capo Passero area - Evaluation of needs of further measurements (collab. with INFN-CNR)

Perform missing measurements - radioactivity monitoring by innovative sensor - multi-parametric analyses (by casts and/or mooring)

WP5 – Shore and deep-sea infrastructure - Evaluation of candidate sites

SN-1: the first real-time seafloor observatory in Europe

KM3NeT KICK-OFF MEETING

From February 2006 SN-1 real-time signals are available at the INGV operative centre in Rome

SN-1 scietific payload:

seismometer (100 Hz) CTD (1 sample/10 min.) gravitymeter (1 Hz) hydrophone (100 Hz) currentmeter (2 Hz)

Long-term time series of SN-1 data will contribute to the characterisation of the Capo Passero geology properties which may impact on the structuresof the neutrino telescope.

The 40K isotope contained in sea salt yields a flux of photons generating a source of background for PMT's.

It is therefore important to monitor eventual variations over time of this background (e.g., due to benthic sediment mobilisation, water currents…)

UNDERWATER 40K GAMMA-RAY SPECTROMETER

KM3NeT KICK-OFF MEETING

Erlangen,11-13 April 2006

Development of a dedicated gamma-ray spectrometer for 40K (and other radionuclides) activity measurements directly in sea water (existing collaboration with specialised labs).

The new spectrometer can be installed in the autonomous multi-sensor deep-sea probe and/or used for casts and profiles from a ship.

“Marinisation” of the spectrometer performed by TECNOMARE (Partner 15)
