TAC 11 RecommendationsTwister Bearings
Recommendation:A simple version of the Twister concept is a reasonable approach. Failure-mode studies for the bearings should be continued (beam losses at the proton beam feed-through need to be carefully studied)Response:Failure mode analysis has been initiated and will be completed in the next few months. Several design improvements have been made to reduce the risk and consequence for a rotation problem. An analysis comparing the force needed to break a cold-welded roller bearing versus a cold-welded sliding bearing has been uploaded to the TAC-12 Indico site.Further studies needed that will be part of detail design:Complete analysis of all identified failure modes, some should be done in cooperation with remote handling group. For example:-Rotation tool failures-Issues lifting the target wheel-Issues lifting the plugs-Issues due to failures of surrounding shielding blocksCollecting further information and experience to make judgment of material combinations and designs that could reduce the risk and effect of the issue.
TAC 11 RecommendationsTwister Bearings
• Number of bearings reduced (4->2)(due to reduced number of shafts)
• Increased distance from bearings to hot spot and proton beam aperture
• Split plug as redundancy (top/bottom) remains so far
• Bearings of coated metal or ceramic hybrid with respect to radiation, cold welding, no lubricant and static load
• Calculation of forces to break a stuck roller bearing

TAC11 RecommendationsCryogenic System
Recommendation:• The TAC would like to see a presentation on the
design of the cryogenic system at the next meeting.Response:• Information on the design of the liquid hydrogen and
helium cryoplant systems will be provided in the TAC-12 meeting as part of the Moderator and Reflector Systems presentation.
