4 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/December, 1980 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - (Continued)

The Valley of the Sun Tournament in Mesa Arizona will be February 20, 21 and 22. This is a week later than usual. The dates were changed by Ralph McCarty. Let's hope for NO RAIN! If you're staying at the Maricopa Inn MOTEL in Mesa, here are the discount rates I received from the new owners: Single: $20; Double: $26; Two Twins: $28; King, $28. We must occupy 15 rooms before the rates apply. Please identify yourself as a horseshoe member when you make reservations. See you in Mesa.

The NHPA Constitutions and By Laws book is being reprinted with the changes of the last two years. John Walker made up the rough draft of revisions, I proofed it and it went to Don-nie Roberts for printing. Thanks John and Donnie!

Following you will find a list of the states who observed our First Annual "Pitch Horseshoes for Health" during the week of the 1980 World Tournament. We received a proclamation from the governors of the states responding.

I will forward each proclamation to each Regional Director soon asking them to present it to the respective State President or Secretary.

Thanks to Bernard Herfurth, Publicity Chairman, for the idea and all his efforts. An addi-tional thanks to the Regional Directors and other members who got invovled and helped on this program.

I feel it was well worth ALL our efforts — for our sport received recognition and publicity in the various states. A job well done!

The states who observed our First Annual "Pitch Horseshoes for Health" are: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky,

Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

NATIONAL PROMOTION COMMITTEE REPORT By Sol Berman, Chairman

We were successful in getting "Young Athlete" magazine to carry an article and picture of Mark Dyson, 1980 Boys' World Champion, in their 1980 December issue.

Lee Davis of Seminole, Florida, will represent the NHPA at the 6th Annual National Youth Sports Director's Conference in Palm Beach, Florida on November 19-20-21, 1980.

Davis will also represent the NHPA at the annual AAU Conference, horseshoe committee meeting in Miami, Florida on December 3, 1980.

The Beherens Company, Inc., of Miami, Florida taped Mark Dyson on October 26, 1980 for an episode on "Kidsworld" (CBS-TV). Herbert Pinch of Sharon, Pennsylvania, made the con-tact.

Mark will also have a story done on him by PM Magazine in Roanoke, Virginia. NHPA HALL OF FAME NEWS

By Bernard Herfurth This article concerns candidates for the NHPA Hall of Fame in the "70 years and over"

category. It was voted by the Hall of Fame Committee that they be allowed to add the ac-

complishments as a player and organizer to this category only. Some of these candidates have been active in the sport 30-40 and 50 years and some of them

have fine pitching records, but not up to standard to be elected as such. Sometimes after pit-ching for many years, the candidates accomplish much as an organizer, but perhaps not outstanding enough to be elected as such. It was the voice of the Committee that these long time supporters of our sport should have the privilege of having their combined activities con-sidered to be elected to the "70 years and over" category.

It is requested that candidates in the "70 and over" category submit an updated history of their combined accomplishments as a player and organizer, if it is felt that it would add to their accomplishments.

The Committee welcomes new or updated histories for consideration to the Hall of Fame.

D. WARD PLAY OFF VICTOR OVER LEBOW FOR TENN. TITLE S. LONG WINNER IN TENNESSEE FIRST LADIES TOURNEY

Don Ward of Bulls Gap of Tenn., won the 1980 Tennessee state championship in a playoff over O.D. Lebow, 50-43 hitting 56 ringers in 72 shoes for 77.7 percent. Lebow had 53 for 72 shoes and 73.5 percent.

On his way to the championhip, Don had 5 games over 80 percent and finished with a fine 78.3 percent. Although he had a high single game of 86.6, he was to be denied having the high game honor as O.D. Lebow edged him out by a high game of 88.0 percent.

10 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/December, 1980 E. SMITH AND K. RAYMOND REPEAT IN WYOMING STATE

Evelyn Smith of Laramie took her fifth consecutive State Championship at the 1980 State Tournament. Kenneth Raymond of Rawlings, champion last year, was able to overcome Dave Harrison of Cheyenne in a playoff and thereby win his fourth title. Judi Ferguson of Riverton and daughter of former State Ladies Champion, Carol Ferguson, won the Junior crown without a loss. This was Judi's first experience in tournament play. Don Whitmer of Cheyenne, after several years of absence from tournament participation, lost one game to cap-ture the Class B title. K. Williams of Casper, on his second try at State, took Class C. J.M. Williams of Casper on his second appearance took Class D with a one-game loss. Clint Jackson of Casper, likewise on his second appearance in the State Tourney, went undefeated to capture Class E. Bev Laurin of Cheyenne won all but one contest to take the Ladies B title.

Thunderstorms in late afternoons of two days disrupted the Men's Classes A and B contests and forced a lay-over of pitchers on Labor Day in order to complete the tournament. Some pit-chers were unfortunately forced to forfeit games on Labor Day as a result of the rainstorms. On Aug. 31 Don Laurin of Cheyenne not only took third place in Men's Class B but won the Merle Palmer Most Improved Player award by increasing his ringer average from last year by 11.9%.

3 f t t J H m o r r a n t The Wyoming Association wishes to report the death of Jack Corbet of Big Piney, WY in

late July, 1980. Jack was a courageous competitor. He put great effort in organizing a local club and in constructing courts. Despite a lingering illness for years, Jack never complained nor did he reveal his discomfort and disadvantages to anyone. His wins were never boastful and his losses without excuses. Wyoming pitchers had great respect and enjoyed the association with this staunch pitcher and supporter. He was our good friend and admired member. To Sid, Jack's wife, the sympathy of the Wyoming State Association and that of the National is ex-tended.

BONANI, BEGIN, DESROCHES SURVIVE LAST CHANCE TOURNEY About a year ago someone suggested that Heritage Recreation Center in Sutton,

Massachusetts, could use another tournament in the fall. The summer season was ending. The Tournament of Champions was upcoming. There was a one-week gap in the schedule. That solved the date problem, Sept. 28.

Next to be decided was, "What kind of tournament?" Not too big. We can't handle the nor-mal two weeks of pitchers in one day. But we don't want to slight anyone. "I know. How about a loser's tournament?" "What do you mean?" "I mean, there are lots of pitchers every year who want to get into the T. of C., but keep getting knocked out by people winning classes who have won before. Let's keep those other people out."

"That"s a good idea. But we can't call if a LOSERS tournament — that doesn't sound too complimentary." "Okay. How about UNDER ACHIEVER tournament?" "How about LAST GASP?" "How about LAST CHANCE tournament, because that's what it is? All finally agreed on LAST CHANCE.

Thus the Heritage Last Chance Tournament was born. And, to everyone's surprise, almost no one showed up, because there weren't too many "eligible." Nineteen underachieves entered. They did horseshoe battle in three classes. The classes were handicapped due to the large spread in percentages.

When the dust had settled, three champions were crowned. Charlie Bonani, Mike Desroches, and Gerry Begin, all undefeted. Charlie breezed with 64%, more like what he had been pit-ching until a month ago. Mike's 26.8% was more like what he was pitching last March. And Gerry's 24.4% was more like last January. Gerry's wins included an overtime two-point vic-tory over her husband Jean.

When all the placques were awarded and the victors were breathing 'Last Gasp' sighs of relief while filling out their Tournament of Champions applications, somebody made the observation that this is one tournament where the winners don't want to return next year as defenging champs. This was the most talked about tournament of the year. All summer long "losers" have been jokingly advised that "There's always the LAST CHANCE." For 16 pit-chers there is only "Next Year."

DEBBY MICHAUD REPEATS AS NEW ENGLAND LADIES' CHAMP LORD SWEEPS THRU TO MEN'S TITLE; JANICE DOMEY NEW GIRLS' CHAMPION; RICHARD FORGUES REPEATS IN BOYS'

The 1980 N.E. horseshoe tournament, held Labor Day weekend on the 24 lighted courts in Wheelock Park, Kenne, N.H. was a success, but a dramatic one, for three defending cham-pions. A fourt 1979 champion, Linda Patenaude, moved into the women's division to help provide some of the drama.

A highlight of the tourney was the Saturday night spectator's delight, the Women's Class A competition. All four entrants sent in 65% as entering averages. After the double-round-robin, all four were proven wrong. Even Liz Downer, Vermont state champion, whose game was not its sharpest and who lost ever game, averaged 66.4%. Defending champion Debby Michaud, Debby Fulford and Linda Patenaude, New Hampshire and Maine state champions respective-ly, ended in a 3-way tie for first place. After 7 hours of top-notch competition, Debby Michaud emerged victorious by a hair. There were 3 games over 100 shoes, including the final playoff game between Debby M. and Debbie F. and there were several 80% + games including one bet-ween Fulford and Michaud in which both pitchers averaged over 80%. High game was by Fulford at 84.9%. It was the best N.E. women's tourney ever with the spectators and com-petitors alike sharing the excitement.

In the men's division, Al Lord of Maine, who now calls himself "The Spoiler", showed why he finished 8th in the World Tournament as he held of 15 challengers to emerge undefeated. He was behind Doug Kienia 42-15 but dug in to win 55-49. Kevin Hollister, Vermont state cham-pion and eventual runner up to Lord, had a chance in the final game to force a playoff but just fell short 51-45. Kevin and the other 1970's "wonder kids" Doug Kienia, Mike Patenaude, and Brian Simmons, all from Maine, are serving notice that they are future serious contenders for any tournament win.

Kevin Hollister had high game of 90.5% and high tournament average of 76.8%. A steady rainfall during his 130 shoe, 51-48 loss to Norm Rioux of Ct. may have turned the tide against him while Al Lord's steady pitching proved sufficient for him to repeat as New England cham-pion.

In the junior boys' division, Richard Forgues of Vermont defeated his brother Joe and four others to successfully defend his title. Rick's high game was an 83.3%.

Janice Domey pitched well against 3 relative newcomers to become the new New England Junior Girl's champion. She had 2 games over 60% and offered much encouragement to her younger opponents.

199 people entered this year's tournament hosted by the Keene, New Hampshire horseshoe club.
