Ratby Parish CouncilDidn't the flower boxes around the village look good thisyear? On your behalf the Parish Council would like to say abig THANK YOU to the ever willing volunteers who plantedthem and to Simon for keeping them supplied with waterduring the dry season.

THANK YOU also to this Sorbus for ten years of green leaves, white flowers, and those amazing bright red berries. It had

companions would flourish onthe site of the old sewage farm, despite the stony substrate, when you were planted to celebrate the Millennium. We were, therefore, saddened to see you lying prostrate on Jubilee Park

Young people in Ratby have shown excellent initiative in asking the ?council to provide a skatepark on Ferndale Park and we hope to meetsome of them informally to discuss the pros and cons. Also we havehad an Indirect approach from the Youth Service to discuss facilities onFerndale Park. We are trying to discover if these two requests are related. Going tothe other end of life, are there any Seniors out there who would like to seesomething on the park for them? We are currently looking for a restrictive barrier forthe Lockley Close entrance to Ferndale Park which will deter or prevent mini-motosfrom entering the park; meanwhile we are deeply grateful to our PBO for hisrelentless pursuit of these vehicles.

Please don't panic if you should see scaffolding around the villagesign at the bottom of Desford Lane. We have received a report thatthe structure is potentially unsafe and therefore have engaged the

• services of Skillstone to put this right.

Bloors are appealing? Yes, this is still ongoing. Firstly, we say another big ^THANK YOU this time to members of the Ratby Village Society for helpingcouncillors deliver the latest advice to every house in the village.Secondly, we need to assure you that your contribution to the parishprecept is being put to good use as the Council has engaged the servicesof a planning consultant to help prepare its case to the Inspectorate ^against this development.

RATBY ART GROUP

Every Tuesday afternoon a group of localpeople meet up at the Village Hall for their Artclass.

The sessions are led by Julia Kent, and areinformal and relaxed. The atmosphere in thehall is tranquil and there is a sense ofconcentrated purpose, as the group work ontheir creations.

'It's peaceful and totally absorbing, I forgeteverything when I am here,' one of the groupsaid.

Some weeks Julia suggests a theme, and thegroup might all work on the same subject tohelp develop their techniques. Most werebeginners; 'You find that you've got an abilitythat you didn't know you've got,' 'It's alwaysgood to challenge yourself.'Another group member remarked that she was'amazed at what I did that first week, we didn'trealize what we could do in two hours.'Some of the group's work is displayed on thewalls of the village hall, and they are workingon pieces to exhibit at the annual Ratby Art andCraft exhibition in November. Why not visit andview the work, some of which is on sale?If you have ever wanted to 'have a go' atwatercolour painting, pop into the hall and havea look? You will be made very welcome. The session runs from 1.30-3.30.Refreshments are available, and it's a sociableafternoon.

Let the sun shine again on our Rector

For many of us the Rectory has been at theheart of Ratby, having held countless events, including picnics, fetes and jazz in the garden.I believe that everyone has at least one fond

memory of times spent here with family orfriends.

As a child my most memorable experience waswith the Rainbows, when we buried a timecapsule in the gardens. We all brought acontribution and discussed why these thingswould be important in the future. My item, abag of white chocolate buttons was rejected, despite my argument that its discoverer wouldbe hungry after all the digging. (I also recalldropping it in when the group was distracted bya squirrel.)In 2009 the decision was made to relocate the

Rectory as it is too much of a financial burden.Discussions have begun with the local PlanningAuthority with the intention of building 'amodest residential property' in the grounds. It is likely that the building will not be let due tothe amount of work needed. Properties will bebuilt on site and the beautiful groundsdestroyed. The inevitable will happen, theRectory will be demolished. This has been the case ail around the area.

Expenditure on Rectories is greater than theirincome. Since when did income determine the

value of these buildings to their communities? The Village Hall is overbooked, and cannotcompare with the beauty of the Rectory. If theRectory was used instead the money receivedcould go towards its upkeep. It is essential that we fight to preserve thiswonderful building that means so much to somany of us. How can we stand by and watch itbeing destroyed. The price to maintain it maybe steep, but the happiness it has given usover the years? Priceless.

WE'LL ALL MISS Th IIS 'LOCAL YOKEL'It is with great sadness that we report the death of

Dennis Green on Sunday August 22^^^, following anunexpected short illness. He contributed manyarticles to this magazine about Ratby's colourfulpast under the pseudonym 'Local Yokel.'

Dennis was a life member of Ratby Local HistoryGroup, and will be remembered for his vivid andfascinating talks of childhood memories andgrowing up in the village. His account of Ratby inthe 1930s/40s was a major contribution to thesecond volume of 'The History of Ratby.' He was afounder member and one-time chair of RatbyVillage Society.

Dennis had been a part of Ratby Methodist Churchall his life and, to him, it was his second home. Hebegan as a child in the Sunday School, receivinghis bible (as was the custom at that time) at the ageof 16. It was a natural progression for him tobecome a Sunday School teacher and a YouthLeader. He was the founder of the Twenty Club (forthe young folk in their 20s) which as the yearsprogressed - and the ages of those involvedincreased - became the Monday Circle. His officialposts in the Church included Trustee, SocietySteward, and Property Steward, not to mention hisinvolvement on the Finance Committee and hiscapacity as Auctioneer for the Harvest auctions formany years.

Dennis had a strong faith and always wanted tolearn more. He had a commitment to serving theLord in many practical ways. He had a greatfondness for local village groups and regularlyprompted the Church in its outreach to the localcommunity. His care for the elderly and infirm of thevillage was exemplified in his delivering ofChristmas gifts from the church. Those at homeand in residential care greatly benefited from hisvisits.

His favourite charity was the Rainbows Hospiceand his tireless work for it, including his annual toysale, was a testament to his care for others.

Den will be greatly missed at Ratby MethodistChurch for his welcoming smile, his cheerfulness, his loyalty, his wonderful sense of humour, hissupport for all the good deeds the Churchendeavoured to do and for his creative talents. Hischarismatic personality will leave a lasting legacy.

His loss will be greatly felt by all who enjoyed hisself-deprecating sense of humour, kindness andgenerosity of spirit.

Thank You.

The overwhelming support of cards, phonecalls, offers of help and flowers since Den'sdeath has made it impossible to replyindividually.

Thank you too for the generous donations toRainbows in Den's name. The total raised isover E1000.lt has made me and my family soproud to know he was held in such high regardby his fellow village folk.

He will be sorely missed.

Thank you and God bless.

Mrs Local Yokel.

ON THE BEATHello everyone, my name is Natalie and I'm yournewest addition to the beat team. I have been

working In the area now for 4 months and enjoyingevery minute of it, I have already met a lot of you atsummer school fetes, beat surgeries etc but stillhave lots of new faces to meet so please say hellowhen you see me around.

In just a few weeks it's time again for the spookyfun of Halloween although for a lot of people this isa vulnerable time as they may live alone or beelderly. Whilst I don't want to ruin the fun ofdressing up and going trick or treating I ask that webear in mind the elderly community and signs ondoors asking not to knock there.

During the Halloween weekend the team will be onhi vis patrols around the villages on foot, bike andalso in the car so if anyone has any issues theywould like addressing please don't hesitate to stopus and ask.

Parents, its not only Halloween soon but also notfar from bonfire weekend, so it is worth consideringwhat your youngsters are doing when they are outand where they are. This not only acts as a safetynet but also will hopefully prevent them from gettinginto mischief and a subsequent call from the Police.

The cold weather is fast coming so kids/youngadults what are your plans for the dark coldevenings? Your Beat Team are still supporting theuse of a Friday Night Youth Club, with transportbeing arranged for youths to travel safely to andfrom the Community Centre in Markfield. I wouldsuggest this is an ideal way for young people to

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Are we in danger of losing our villageidentity?

In Ratby we are very proud of our excellentpre-school facility, this year however there areat least a dozen children who unfortunately willnot be attending due to the lack of places. This year no children have been taken fromoutlying areas, but still we lack the facilities tofulfil the requirements of our own villageresidents.

I also know of a couple of Instances whereresidents have been refused for their children

to attend Ratby Primary; however after anappeal they were accepted. (This is just thestart)We still have a considerable amount of housingdevelopment to come, the old bakery site,Cawrey's new development on Groby Road, and Bloor still trying to construct yet more.Without an Improvement to our alreadystretched facilities this situation will onlydeteriorate with the main problem being theeducation and well being of our village children.

Our current infrastructure cannot sustain anymore housing projects without improving ourroads, education facilities, a medical centre, and leisure amenities. To preserve our current way ofvillage life wemust therefore oppose any futuredevelopments unless they are accompaniedwith the facilities to fulfil our needs.Without these our future looks grim, withparents having to travel as far as Markfield andKIrby just to ensure their children have pre andPrimary school places. Are these journeys that you want to make on adaily basis in all weathers? And do you havetransport at your disposal to make these trips?Parents beware: County Hall have alreadydesignated Markfield Primaryas acatchment area for Rathy.

People asked for their views onCouncil leadership

People in Hinckley &Bosworth are being askedto have their say on how the Borough Councilwill be governed in the future.

At the moment the council is run by a 'strongleader' helped by a cabinet executive, who areall chosen by fellow councillors.

However, the Government has asked all localauthorities to make a decision on how theywant to be governed; this couldinclude changing to an alternativearrangement. This would see the council beingrun by a mayor, who would be directly electedby the people, backed by a cabinet executive.

The council's preferred option is to keep theexisting arrangement with some minoramendments required by the legislation, butthey want to hear what other people think. Afeedback form is available on the council'swebsite (www.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk) orcomments can be emailed directly to:

[email protected]

by 30 October 2010.

All views will be considered and a decision willbe taken at the full council meeting inDecember 2010.
